“Excellence” is becoming better in order to become the BEST you can be!

Why are you here? What area do you want to improve in order to become your BEST?
Lose weight? Gain muscle tone/definition? Improve your nutrition? Boost your self-esteem? Gain confidence? Become more knowledgeable? Need accountability? Find motivation?
Maybe you are looking for a combination of these?!

Welcome to Team Engage! I am Coach Gerry Smith. If you are ready to EXCEL, then I am ready to help you! My mission is to aid you in your quest for EXCELLENCE!
It doesn’t matter if you are a Beachbody veteran or if this is your first attempt at any kind of fitness program, everyone is invited to join…please do. I have personally experienced AMAZING results while using Beachbody products and I think the biggest factor in my success has been getting involved in a message board like this. That’s why I started this thread.

If you join this thread you will:
1) Create accountability to someone other than yourself. Being a part of a larger group will make you part of a TEAM and keep you feeling obligated to work out and stay on track!
2) Be motivated by your own progress and the progress of your teammates! You’ll see people posting about how they overcame obstacles… things like business travel, holiday activities, etc. and still managing to work out or stay on point with nutrition. You WILL get fired up and energized!
3) Get all the information you need to succeed. I am a high school coach and science teacher with a degree in Physical Education. I’ll monitor this thread closely and post daily to keep track of everyone and make sure questions are answered. Everybody else pitches in to answer questions too.

Are you looking for accountability, motivation, and information?
Are you looking for a coach that will be responsive and dedicated?
Are you ready to ENGAGE to EXCEL?
If so, then you’re in the right place!!!

Just reply to the thread and introduce yourself as a newbie. Once you do that scroll up to the top of the thread and click “subscribe” in the upper right corner of this first post. Then read my next couple posts. They will provide you with a little more information for you to feel comfortable in this thread!! It’s that easy!!!

For the “newbies”, welcome to the thread and thanks for joining!!! We’ll keep you motivated and energized.

If there is one thing that I think you really need to do its to post your accountability every day. This includes at least quick note on your workout(s) and diet for the day. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KEEPING YOU MOTIVATED. Trust me on this and just commit to doing it for at least the first week.

It would be great if you could also do a few things to help us get to know you a little better:
1) Upload a profile picture. This is in your TeamBeachbody.com profile.
2) Sign your post with your real name (first name only is fine)
3) Tell us who you are
4) Tell us WHY are you doing this workout program and join this thread
5) What do you hope to get out of this round?

Please add me as a buddy so I can send you some more information to help you get started.

For newbies and returning members, PLEASE welcome people to the thread as they join. This is a key to getting them motivated and ramped up quickly. I appreciate you doing this.

That’s it. Lets dig deep and bring it!!

OK…Here are some initial tips to help you get going …

Keep Track:
- Do the fit test (if your program has one). You will glad you did and sorry if you don’t. You will get really motivated by seeing progress. It will also create accountability.
- TAKE BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES. I know it may be embarrassing or might feel uncomfortable. You will be sorry if you don’t do it anyway. Do it every 30 days
- Take your measurements every 30 days and especially at the start
- Write down all your exercises, reps, and notes. The programs come with worksheets to do this. Use them!!! Again, its extremely motivating to see your progress and it inspires you to do better each workout. Its important!

The TeamBeachbody web site has a bunch of great tools to help with this. Take advantage of them! Enter all the info above in your profile and it will track it for you.

I also recommend MyFitnessPal for managing and tracking your calorie intake. There a web page and mobile app for iPhone, Andriod, and Blackberry.

Nutrition: There’s a quote that says “Why work so hard in the gym to waste it on a bad diet”. It’s the truth. You won’t get great results with a bad diet. I can help you with as much detail as you want. For now I’ll say:

- Check your program’s nutrition guide for the ratio of macros (Carbs/protein/fat). I stick with a 40/40/20 split
- Stay away from sugars as much as you can
- The fewer ingredients the better. Keep refined and processed food to a minimum
- Eat 5-6 times per day
- Drink lots, and lots, and lots of WATER (at least half your body weight in oz of water is a good rule to follow)
- Make sure you know roughly how many calories you need each day and be sure to get them. If you don’t have the fuel you need you will struggle with the workouts and lose motivation. The amount you need will change depending on your activity level each day. Make sure you get enough. Not eating enough is a common mistake that leads to bad results. BTW…MyFitnessPal makes adjustments for you automatically.
- Shakeology is a great way to get a ton of nutrition in one meal. You would have to eat a whole lot of veggies and fruit to get what one shake gives you. It also has plenty of protein. You can use it as a snack or meal replacement (low calorie). I have one every morning for breakfast!

Pre-Workout: The workouts are intense. Don’t eat any less than an hour before your workout. I recommend a pre-workout snack/supplement of some sort before you work out. I like to use a formula/supplement designed specifically for pre-workout boost. The do make a difference

Post-Workout: Its extrememly important to have a recovery drink within 20 minutes after your workout. This is CRITICAL. You need to replace the glycogen you burned up, prevent muscle breakdown, and start the recovery process immediately after a workout. There’s a ton of science supporting this. There are a few options. The P90X Resulst and Recovery is great and I recommend it.

Accountability: As I said in the second post of this thread, post your accountability on this thread DAILY! This is absolutely key to keeping you motivated and consistent. You’ll meet others that are going through exactly what you are and it helps stay accountable and inspired! Your forum buddies will have tips and information that has helped them and could help you as well. You will be doing the same in no time!

So, ready to get started? First step, post your commitment to join the team, and second, add me as a buddy and I'll give you more important information. I can drill into any of the stuff above in more detail. I really want to help people succeed and look forward to getting to know you and seeing the new you!

GET READY AND BRING IT!!

My name is Jeannine. I'm a newbie. I just started Hip Hop Abs. This is my first DVD prgram, I've done classes at the gym before. I choose Hip Hop Abs because I like the muscic and dance aspect and wasn't sure if I was ready for more intense programs, but I hope to get there eventually! I'm looking for a group where I can stay motivated and accountable. I'm looking to lose some weight (I have about 12 lbs to reach my goal weight), then just try to get a toned, fit look. I'm ready to go!

Just checking in......Today will be Day 4 of Hip Hop Abs! I haven't lost any weight the last few days, since starting Hip Hop Abs, but think maybe my body is adjusting to all the water I am drinking and hopefully a little muscle building! I have also started adding in the 2 healthy snacks needed between meals - almonds, celery and hummus, yogurt, cheese stick, fruit. Happy to be starting off the year right!

Excellent tips! Feeling a little more confident. Started Insanity on Jan 1 (did Fit Test and first workout on Jan 1). Was feeling pretty discouraged after yesterday's workout, but am hoping my lack of endurance is partially due to food/calorie intake. Hard to eat all that in a day while I'm at work, but am doing my best to improve upon it.

Currently a Jazzercise instructor, teaching once a week, only attending up to 3 classes a week because of my schedule. Couple years ago was literally exercising 7 days a week (between Jazzercise and hiking/jogging/etc). Jazzercise center closed, we had to relocate classes, got injured...you name it, it happened last year and all the work, toning, weight loss I had achieved is gone. Hoping to use this as a jump-start to my hiking season and to improve my ability as a Jazzercise Instructor.

Way to go Jeannine...getting through your first week is always the toughest part of starting any fitness program. You will be more than half through week 1 today!! Don't worry too much about your weight loss in the beginning...you are right, your body is going to go through some adjustments as it tries to figure out what you are doing to it. Look for the subtle changes your body is going through...how clothes fit, how much more you can tighten that belt, etc. The changes happen...sometimes its gradually & sometimes you'll swear it happened over night. Don't rely soley on your scale! Glad to hear your making changes to your eating patterns! Sounds like you are headed in the right direction! One word of caution...make sure you have determined what your caloric intake should be (you can find help doing that under the "eat smart" tab on this website...I believe its under "nutrition tools'). The formula is pretty simple, you must burn more calories each day than you are putting in, BUT if you don't put in just the right amount, your body will start storing energy away in the form of fat. Its like your body is saying, "hold food back from me, I'll show you." So there is a proper balance & it might take a little work to see what works for you! Stay active with the thread & welcome new people as they join in...soon, we will have a network of people you can receive support & motivation from!!!

Hello Sarah!!! Welcome to the thread!!! This is a brand new thread & soon we will have alot of people active here! We are all here to motivate and help each other. We always celebrate each other's successes, encourage each other through the rough times and pick each other up when we feel like we've fallen. We provide each other a ton of support. You'll get a lot more out of this board than you could possibly put in. With that said, we strongly encourage you to check in and post as often as you can - every day is ideal.
I hope you will stay active here! The first week of Insanity is a killer. You will probably be sore the better part of week 1...it does get better. And your fitness will improve. You will see that in your Fit Test Results!! Being a Jazzercise instructor, I know this is nothing new to you! If you stick with it, you will cruise through your hiking season & teaching your classes will be easier than ever before...you'll be amazed at how fit you will become!! I have added alot of concepts from Insanity into my track teams workouts!! I recieved your buddy request, thanks!!
Gerry

Great information, already feel a little more motivated! I started Insanity January 1 and also felt discouraged due to the fact that I simply can not keep up but I'm hoping that over time I will build the endurance to keep up with the video and get results. I am here to loose weight, tone my body and over all learn to lead a healthy lifestyle. Right now my diet is two protein shakes a day (as a meal replacement) with one colorful meal and two snacks in between my meals. So far I've only been able to drink three bottles of water a day but I'm working on getting up to eight bottles for now. Thank you for the great support and information, I look forward to keeping in touch.

Hi, I'm Brad and I'm a newbie. I'm a 23 year old student and I decided to start the Insanity workout program for the new year. I am no stranger to athletic training since I played competitive ultimate frisbee with a college club team for four and a half years. I was really in shape during those years and loved the sport. However, this past fall semester in 2012 at school really caught me by surprise and changed my workout habits. I went to the gym less, ended up missing practices, skipping tournaments, and found myself in the library more and more trying to finish up with good grades.

Now that new year has begun, I hope to get back into the swing of staying fit and eating right. I want to be proactive instead of reactive before I get too out of shape. Insanity right now is kicking my rear end so to speak! It's hard for me to keep up with the videos but I feel if I keep at it, things will improve. I wanted to join a this thread to gain helpful knowledge and support from others trying to improve their fitness. Coach Gerry, you put up some inspiring words and great information. I hope to learn more about dieting and eating the right amount of calories for optimal results.

Brad

Day 4 of Hip Hop Abs workout complete! Getting really comfortable with the cardio on it. Had a good nutrition day today too! Trying to get used to adding in the two snacks a day....kinda makes me hungrier because I am watching the clock for my eating times. Before I wouldnt really think about food and could of even skipped a meal but I know that the fuel is important and definitely more healthy! Kinda enjoying this new routine of getting home straight into a workout and then a nice hot bath afterwards, then dinner.
