Assistance with daily calorie intake while doing Insanity
Hello! My name is Izzy and here are a few stats before I ask for assistance.

I'm 26, weighing 227 pounds @ 5'3.
I just completed day 4 of Insanity and currently using myfitnesspal app to track my calorie intake.
My goal weight is 150, with a suggested (per myfitnesspal) 1920 calorie intake.

It's currently recording that 40mins of Insanity is burning 839 calories.
I'm eating breakfast, lunch and dinner with about 1-2 snacks in between.

I'm concerned that...

a.) I'm not taking in enough calories (currently depending on the day 1174-800 intake after the exercise)

b.) The calories I'm burning(per myfitnesspal) from Insanity are incorrect

Any & all assistance, feedback and tips are appreciated!
And sorry in advance if this is in the incorrect thread.

Thanks!

Hey Lizzie,
First question, are you hungry? Is that why you don't think it's enough or are you concerned about the numbers? My fitnesspal is great for calorie intake. Are you following the insanity workout out diet that came with the program. I'm not sure that 839 calorie burn is correct. Usually, and it TOTALLY depends on the person, it's between 350ish and 500.

How are you feeling on day four? and GREAT job for getting to day four!!! I'm in week six right now and I remember week one being SO tough!

Please ask me any questions. If I don't have an answer I will be able to find it. This board is great for support, USE IT!

Have a great night!

Thanks Heather for your reply!

I am not hungry. I have no extra cravings outside of what I'm eating. And before I started Insanity I adjusted my portions as well. So, I'm feeling good about what I do eat.
I'm concerned about the numbers simply from reading around, saying that if you don't eat enough calories it causes your body to go into starvation mode.
BEFORE I started this journey, I didn't eat breakfast or lunch and was still overweight. So it just sorta scares me a bit.

I am not currently following the diet plan with the program. I'll be making adjustments later to follow it.

I figured the calorie burn # was maybe a stretch. What are some great "tools" that I could use to ensure my calorie burn is being tracked correctly? (Sorry, completely new to all of this)

I'm feel good about Insanity. It's so hard, but I've never been so motivated in my life. I do struggle with most of the exercises and positions, but I stick to it and give it my all.

Again, thank you so much Heather!!

I think if you aren't taking in enough cals, you will feel like you can't make it through your workouts. I would estimate 300 cals burned on workout days. For a women taking in less than 1200 calories could make you go into starvation mode and actually store fat...not sure about the facts on that but your body will tell you if you need more if you are feeling exhausted. Make sure you get your rest too. I've always found that sometimes it takes a couple months to see the weight drop. Focus on how you feel and you will do fine.

Izzy, congrats on picking Insanity as your fitness program!!!! Knowing and understanding your nuutrition is incredibly important when trying to reach your fitness goals and you certainly came to the right place to get your questions answered!!

Ok, I think I see the issue here. You are using myfitnesspal to track your calories and also using myfitnesspal to figure your daily caloric intake. Only use myfitnesspal to track calories..ONLY. Myfitnesspal does not take into account important factors such as fitness factor, age and gender when determining your daily caloric intake.

I took the liberty of running the information you gave in your post through the Harris Benedict formula. This formula is MUCH more accurate when determining daily caloric intake levels and takes into account the factors I mentioned. Using a fitness factor of 1.55 (not sure of your daily intensity so I used this factor), I determined your daily caloric intake to be 2800 calories a day. Now this is the amount of calories to take in each day while doing your program in order to MAINTAIN the weight you are at now. I assume your goal is to lose weight.....so if you take an 800 calorie a day deficit from 2800 calories, your daily caloric intake should be in the area of 1900-2000 calories per day. Taking in below 1200 per day can be dangerous to your body and it may begin to shut down and start storing food as fat and you will begin to gain weight, much better known as starvation mode. By not eating enough, your metabolism slows down. When your metabolism slows down, you begin to gain weight....but eating more increases your metabolism thereby giving your body the ability to lose weight through proper nutrition and fitness.

I know that telling you to eat more on order to lose weight sounds ridiculous....it was hard for me to wrap my head around that concept as well but it is so true!!

I hope you have found this helpful. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have as I am here to help!!!
