Confused on Calories....
Confused on Calories....
1/6/13 7:16 PM
I messed up on the calculation in the insanity book I believe. I didn't it 3 times, and got just over 3200 calories? No! That can't be right?!?

Then I came here looking for help and the online quick calc said 1900.

Help! That's a bit of a variance!

I am 41, 6ft 2in, 259, coming from being a seditary lifestyle, to staring insanity.

Thank in advance for any help!!emoticon

Yeah, I think the Insanity nutrition guide does shoot a little high sometimes, so I'm not surprised with the first number. With your starting weight at 259 lbs I would say start around 2500 calories and see how your body reacts to that. 1900 would be a bit low in my opinion.

Good Morning!!!! Congrats on picking an awesome program Insanity is NO JOKE!!!! I also agree witth he poster above that 1900 is too low for a man your size!!

I took the liberty of running the information you gave in your post through the Harris Benedict formula. This formula is MUCH more accurate when determining daily caloric intake levels. Using a fitness factor of 1.55 (not sure of your daily intensity so I used this factor), I determined your daily caloric intake to be 3600 calories a day. Now this is the amount of calories to take in each day while doing your program in order to MAINTAIN the weight you are at now. I assume your goal is to lose weight.....so if you take an 1000 calorie a day deficit from 3600 calories, your daily caloric intake should be in the area of 2500-2600 calories per day.

I figured your BMR to be in the area of 2300 calories. Taking in below your BMR per day can be dangerous to your body and it may begin to shut down and start storing food as fat and you will begin to gain weight, much better known as starvation mode. By not eating enough, your metabolism slows down. When your metabolism slows down, you begin to gain weight....but eating more increases your metabolism thereby giving your body the ability to lose weight through proper nutrition and fitness.

I think its great that you are taking time to figure out your daily caloric intake as THAT is the foundation of any nutrition plan!!! If you need assistance with develping a meal plan, let me know as this is my team's specialty!!

I hope you have found this helpful. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have as I am here to help!!!

It seems like those that have posted have all agreed to around the same number. I had you figured at about 2800. What your your goals? How far are you into Insanity?

Hi Kim!

My goals are I would like to ultimately weight about 180. I am 6'2" 259 right now. I am also a "smaller framed" person. This really makes me look heavier faster.

As far as insanity, I just did day 2 today. It's a start!
