I'm trying to set up our own menu for phase 1 of P90X (working on a budget), but after looking at the meal plan approach and comparing it to the portion approach, I became confused about the method of calculating protein in each meal.

For phase 1, we need 5 portions of protein a day. That does not seem to include the protein in our power bars or recovery drink (we substitute a protein shake for the recovery drink). It also doesn't include the snack each day.

Is this correct? Should I really be planning for 1 protein at breakfast, 2 at lunch, and 2 at dinner, while not taking into account the 30+ grams of protein I get from the shake, bar, and snack?

Bottom line - how many grams of protein TOTAL should we be shooting for each day?

You are correct. In the portion approach you have the Proteins and then the snacks, so they are really like 7 portions.

You can really mix the portions as you will, it won't affect much, I would recommend placing less proteins in the evening , as will help sleep better.

The amount of grams of protein depends of you calories calculation, and your goals (lose or gain weight?). Send me your weight, height and age and will give you a quick number.

125 lbs, 5'4", 27 yrs, female. I'm trying to tone up, get lean, and just generally stronger.

There isnt a designated about per meal that you need to have. Just make sure at the end of the day your hitting your suggested protein amount. I do take into consideration my shakes and snacks. Its all part of your calories so it should be part of your macros as well! I shoot for protein in almost every single meal. SOmtimes my snacks will be fruit and almonds but almonds or nuts in general do have some protein in them.

You should have 1,600 calories and follow the percentages from the nutrition manual , in phase 1 are 50/30/20 . Do not go bellow 1370 calories, let me know if you have more questions.
