OKCathy's Month o' Abs with Shaun T
Showing 14 results.
Happy 2013 y'all! I'm OKCathy, I'm a 47-year-old French professor in OKC with 2 kids, a big ol' messy house, and many volunteer commitments. I am a VERY low-key BB coach (I have 5 customers in 13 months as a coach), because I'm mainly a big big fan of BB workouts.

When BB offered the Black Friday specials, I went a little nuts and got HipHop Abs, TurboFire, and P90X (that last one for my husband, who has yet to open the box, tee hee!).

Anyway, I've done Slim in 6, Slim Series, and 3 rounds of Chalean Extreme. Finished the third one off, badly, in mid-December and besides three days of skiing and sledding in Taos, NM, I didn't work out really at all for 3 weeks. Which means I'm really REALLY ready for this new program!

DAY 1: Fat Burning Cardio
Okay, I watched some of the intro video and learned the 3Ts of Shaun T, then jumped ahead to the designated workout for the day.
30 minutes, really? Well Chalene Johnson can kick my ass in 30 minutes, so I figured I'd give Shaun the benefit of the doubt. Is this guy related to Will Smith? They sound so much alike and if Will bulked up more, I think they might even look more alike! :-) Anyway, he's so friendly and cute that the tape held my attention even if the moves were, well, really basic and not very challenging. My *arms* were more tired than anything! Suffice to say, I got through it without any problems and am a little concerned that this workout is going to be overall too easy for me. But I'm willing to give it more of a chance, so onward to Day 2!

DAY 2: Total Body Burn
Even though the schedule says to do the FBC again today, I was looking for more of a challenge, and I noticed on the HHA box that this workout is listed as 45 minutes. That was encouraging. More encouraging was the idea that this workout is not introduced until week 3, when a complete newbie might be able to handle it. Once I started, I was pleased to see some of the cast wearing weighted gloves, and I was stoked when it was time to pick up some weights! I got through nearly everything (the last set of knee lifts proved a bit tough) with the 5-pounders and my arms were tired. Barely got through those pushups afterwards. :-) So I am encouraged that I can juice this thing up and get the benefits of HHA without sacrificing my level of fitness. I definitely got my sweat on and feel like I worked my bod.

See you tomorrow!

Hip Hop Abs, Day 3: Ab Sculpt

Now *that's* more like it! This 30-minute workout had some moxie. I used 5-pound dumbbells for the weighted section and it was tough (I couldn't do all of the overhead action). Might need to get me some weighted gloves. Glad to have some of the moves revisited, so my brain isn't working quite so hard and I can focus on the physicality of it instead.

Since I have a long history of dance, yoga, and Pilates, my core is pretty strong. Just not very shapely of late, as I haven't been working it very hard of late.

I hadn't realized how short this would be, so I also did Last-Minute Dance. That was fun! And a bit silly. But I'm happy to add on another 15 minutes of jumping around with Shaun T. and his girlz. I am probably old enough to be their mother, hee! but I can keep up with them so what the heck.

Happy to have re-established a routine: 3 days in a row! With my kids back to school and my semester about to kick into high gear, it's a good time for me to be stepping back into the rest of my life, too. And I have made dinner at home (not from a box) 2 out of the last 3 nights. Also a good thing!

See you tomorrow,
OKCathy

HipHop Abs, Days 4-6

Well, I danced two of these days, but it wasn't really HipHop!

I did me some Nia, which is combination of Dance, Martial Arts, and Yoga (or something like that).
I normally cannot attend the class locally, since I teach on Friday mornings, but since classes hadn't started yet I was able to attend. And then the instructor has added a 1x/month Saturday class, so I went for that, too!

And then I rested the other day. One extra day of rest, but better than I'd been doing in December. I will forgive myself and move on.

Here's to the next workout!

HipHop Abs, Days 7 and 8

So, I rested on Sunday, too. Just very busy with family stuff and getting ready to teach my 3 classes (which started today, Day 8)

Day 8: Back to Total Body Burn. I did better on the coordination of a few of the moves, but the weighted abs mess me up with the number of reps per side. Somehow I miss a cue and keep doing 2x or 4x when Shaun wants me to do 4x or 8x per side. Oh well! The total number of reps works out. :-)

That's a strong 45-minute workout! And I did it with 5-pound weights! And I managed to do all of the reps on the biceps/triceps section, which was a little too much for me last week. Tomorrow, I plan to do the two shorter workouts as scheduled on the calendar.

Feels good to get a little sweaty and experience a wee bit of soreness. Reminds me that I'm actually doing something with my body.
Hopefully, I'll see some results in another week or 2.

Thanks for reading!

HipHop Abs, Day 9

I did the Cardio Burn for the second time, and I enjoyed it better. I have lowered my expectations, which is probably for the best!

Also, my 12-year-old daughter is interested in building up some cardio endurance (and, truth be told, she could work on her core), so she joined me for the 30 minutes and did VERY well. She could put more effort into it, but she was learning the moves and she got all the way through without gasping or complaining. I am proud of her.

I am proud of me for making this a part of my life style in such a way that she feels good about being part of it.

Also proud for getting into week 2 without too much fanfare!

See you tomorrow,
OKCathy

Hip-Hop Abs, Day 10

And again! I did the Total Body Burn today again. I should do the biceps and triceps on the right side first (that's my weak side) so that the arm is less fatigued from just holding the 5-pound weight during the activity on the other side.

Other than that, I did better with the grouping on the knee lifts (there was some grunting, though!) -- I didn't get overly confused about the switching from singles to 2s, 2s, to 4s, 4s to 8s and then back down.

Just glad to be getting back into a routine of some kind with my workouts. Even though my daughter was home sick and I had work plus errands plus all the usual stuff, I managed to get it together.

If I can do it, you can, too! Tie on those tennies and press play. You'll be glad you did. :-)

See you tomorrow!

Hey OKCathy! Just joined up when we received Shaun T's HHA about a week and a half ago...

I'm Sylvia (from Winnipeg Canada...brrrr!!!! ;) - my partner, Gerry, and I are committed to this fun way to learn some moves and get into better shape before we head down to Mexico in mid-Feb...

Thanks for sharing your experiences with this program... I also found that the cardio (30 minute) wasn't quite enough, so I moved on to the Cardio Groove (I think that's what it's called) - anyway, it's 40 minutes plus an extra 6 if you want it ("challenge") - it's great and a way better sweat if you're used to a longer workout...

I'm excited for the full body workout (and nervous too, I have such poor upper body strength right now so I'm bound to be sore at least at first!) so I don't think I'll wait for it to come up on the calendar.

Yeah, we both liked ab sculpt, too ... I took my measurements before starting this program, so I'm really interested to see results in a month... I'm working on shedding 10 lb based on this program, zumba on my days "off" (do you like zumba? I'm crazy addicted to it! LOL), and of course high attention to food intake (ie portion control mostly)...

You look great in your picture! Good job on getting your daughter involved, too, especially at 12 years! Our kids are grown up already (I'll be 50 next month) but it's still fun when we can fit in a fun workout sometimes when they come over. (We like Dance Party on Wii)

Anyway, just wanted to get some/share some inspiration to keep on going - hope you have a great workout today!

Sylvia! Thanks for writing in!

I have never done Zumba, though I think I'd like it a lot.
I will have to check out the Cardio Groove, but maybe on a day when my daughter isn't going to dance with me -- I don't know if she's going to be up for a longer session.

Since I am used to Chalean Extreme, the upper body endurance stuff is not as horrendous as it might be otherwise, but the overhead stuff with 10 pounds is a bit much. I am going to look into weighted gloves so that I can wear them for the whole workout and I suspect it will add to the overall workout.

My kids (I also have an 8-year-old son) love the Wii dance party activities. We just got a Disney version, which is a hoot.

Good for you to have a pre-Mexico goal. Where are you going, exactly?

Hip-Hop Abs, Day 11

So I got up this morning and did me some Ab Sculpt.
The first few minutes, I'm thinking, "Is this the right workout? It's really not very challenging...."
And *then* we went for the weights and it got real. Wow. Those sections are tough and get me going.

The floor work is not challenging enough for me, though.

So, I decide to try the "Last Minute Abs" and really? only 6 minutes?
That thing is CRAZY! I was killing myself on the hammer moves at the end.
Dang.

More soon,
OKCathy

We're going to Cancun - we've been there before, but only the airport (headed for Playa del Carmen) - so we're excited to see what it's like. Right now, it's bitterly cold here, so we'll just be happy to have the heat! ha ha! Have you been?

Yeah, the weighted gloves look good... I have a pair of 1 LB wrist/ankle weights, which I've been strapping on the last couple workouts, and it's ok, but the gloves would be more stable.

I'm curious about last minute abs now... maybe I'll through that onto the end of Cardio Groove tomorrow... emoticon

Thanks for writing back! Have a great night!

Had a great week in Cancun back in the 90s and will be returning this December with my family (hubby and I went to Playa in 2011 and loved it!)

Can't believe i'm up to week 3 already -- this program is not moving me as others have done; I think I'm going back to Slim Series after this, which will at least have helped me get back into some level of endurance.

Enjoying the long weekend with my family and getting some stuff done around the house, which feels good on another level.

Stay with it!

HipHop Abs Day 12: Fat Burning Abs

My daughter and I did the routine together again This afternoon. She's getting the hang of it and I am happy to help inspire her to improve her level of fitness. At age 12, she's hardly full grown, but she's wearing an 8 1/2 shoe (same as me) and is 5' 2" but her belly is much bigger than her chest and hips, making her a real apple shape. Neither my husband or I have this body type, and I know hers may change dramatically, but we want to encourage her in a positive way to be active and to take care of herself.

So this is a good thing. She doesn't work as hard as I do (I hit it hard, like my many Shaun T!), but she doesn't complain and doesn't quit.
I'll take it!

Hip Hop Abs, Day 13: Rest Day

We hosted a big party this evening and spent most of the day getting ready for it. Super fun. Maybe a bit to much wine. :-)

Hip Hop Abs, Day 14: Fat Burning Cardio

Girly and I worked out together again this afternoon. She's curious about the Cardio Groove, now, so I think we might try that on Tuesday (she's got 2 dance classes tomorrow, so I won't inflict another workout!). It'll do my own thing and check it out.

She's at an ice skating party now, which is better than some other activities she might engage in on a Sunday afternoon.

We are getting the hang of it and talk to each other about the workout as we go along. I try to encourage her as the workout goes on, reminding her to stay tight in the abs, commenting on how fast it goes by, and recalling the sequence of moves.

A good thing! A long weekend. Parade tomorrow and Cardio Groove!
