What am I doing wrong with Insanity.
Showing 16 results.
Hello, I am 36 5'4 and 176lbs. I am currently starting week 7 of insanity and I'm not having any weigh loss. I do the dvds at 5:30a.m before I eat anything. I usually do a scoop of protein after my workout and about an hr later I have 2 boil eggs and scamble eggs and mushrooms. I try to eat a veg, lean protein and a soup of salad for lunch and the same for dinner. In between if i get the chance I have an apple of a 100 calorie snack. Is that enough for me to eat? I have always had problems with weigh loss. Please help anyone!!!!!

I'm going to say, I don't think you're eating enough. Are you on myfitnesspal? Have you calcuated how many calories you should be eating to support Insanity? Typically, people will tell you weight loss is 80 percent what you eat, so work on focusing on that. Are you taking measurments too? Are your clothes fitting the same? Do you know if you have a history of thyroid issues?

Lets get you through this!

Download loseit or myfitnesspal app for your smartphone and start tracking your calories and macronutrients. Use the nutrition guide to find an accurate calorie target. Make sure you weigh your food for better accuracy and use nutrition labels.

You could be under eating or over eating so calculate your calories with the nutrition guide and start tracking. If you still don't see weight loss after that then you just need to take off some calories, maybe 250-300. Although at this point you may not be losing from sever under eating.

Hey!

I'm also 5'4" and did Insanity last fall. I bet it's your calories. Did you know your diet is 70% of your results??! I didn't figure it out until Month 2. My month 1 results were okay, but they weren't great (or as much as I had hoped), but I hadn't been eating for the workouts. Once I started adding in calories and the snacks, I began seeing a bigger change emoticon I also think drinking plenty of water consistently and getting at least 7 hours of sleep helps. Another tip I have found is to mix up my meals. Nutritionists suggest this because it helps your body get a wider variety of nutrients ;)

Do you know how to calculate your calories? I think you minimum should be 1500. That is if you want to lose weight and have a desk job. Do you know if you are close to that? I can send you the meal plans I have used if you want an idea besides the insanity guide too. Have you tried any of those recipes though?

Is this your first workout? I did ChaLEAN and TurboFire first to ease me into Insanity.

Talk to you soon!

Could you actually list a sample day of your exact diet? It's very difficult to asses your situation when you speak generally. Is 100 calorie snack carrots, almonds, or a brownie for example?

If you are eating as little as you say you are and not losing weight then you may want to consider portion size. You may be eating healthy but still be over-doing it. I also see little to no healthy fats listed above, which are essential for hormone regulation and weight loss.

This is EXACTLY what I would have said if PushRPM didn't say it first.

I think you guys are right. I am not eating enough. I have the myfitness pal app now I will give it try. I was inform that my thyroid was a little out of wack and took meds for a short period of time. This was several years ago and I know it's time to get that check on again just to be sure. As far as meals, I do a scoop of muscle milk with water that around 5:30 a.m while I work out along with my water. Breakfast will either be 2 boil eggs, 2 scramble egg/mushrooms, or a bowl of oatmeal that I cook with a pat of margarine and a spoon of light brown sugar. I work in a very time consuming lab and I rarely get a chance to have a mid morning snack. Lunch is a salad with lettuce, tomatoe and eggs, and low fat raspberry ving. dressing and progresso soup. Afternoon snack may be an apple, 100 popcorn or granola bar. Dinner is a veg(squash, mushrooms, green beans and baked chicken or fish. I have water throughout the day and I will do a cystal light with my lunch.

I had a co worker I used to work with at Moss Point and no matter what she did, she barely lost weight and that was attribute to her thyroid, so you really might want to get it checked up again. Just about everyone else already suggested to download an app to keep track of your calories, but you can also write down a food journal and the effects of each food on your body.

Have you tried the meal plan that came with the workout? If you haven't I suggest you give that a shot. The meal on there is generally pretty good and takes some of the guess workout from deciding your next meal. Some carbs here and there would help out also, they are your body first to energy source. That oatmeal you eat is pretty good, but don't forget about brown rice, whole wheat/grain bread, pasta, etc also.

I'm not sure I would be so quick to jump to the under-eating issue. Even if you are under-eating, you should have seen some weight loss after 7 weeks of caloric deficit, which leads me to believe you arn't in a deficit in the first place.

What you have listed out seems like a decent diet. You could clean some things up, but its a solid enough start that shouldn't be hindering your results. I highly suggest you track your calories and pay attention to labels and portions.

The muscle milk, margarine, brown sugar, raspberry ving and progresso soup alone could easily be netting you more calories than you think. A little extra butter here, a bigger scoop of sugar there, too much ving may be your answer.

I'd personally try to do the following, aside from more carefullly tracking portions, labels, and calories:

1.Cut the muscle milk. It is not a great protein powder in the first place, and you shouldn't be drinking it during a workout anyway. If recovery or soreness is a problem, find a better way to get protein into your diet with real food.

2. Switch to olive oil instead of the ving. Your diet is low in healthy fats and this solves that. Alternatively find a time to snack on almonds (but watch portions)

3. Drop the soup. Sodium nightmare, not really that great for you, all marketing.

If you track you calories and you are sure you are at a caloric deficit and still not losing, then you should see a Dr., especially given past thyroid issues.

I am right there with you as far as the weight loss difficulty. I am a firm believer that it just takes some people longer to lose that weight. I've lost weight before with a strict diet and exercise program, and it took me about a year to lose 30 lbs. I am pear shaped, and carry my weight pretty well, so people are always shocked when I tell them what I weigh.

I started my first round of Insanity at 184 lbs, ended at 177.2 lbs. Not a lot of weight lost, but I lost 20.5 inches. I took 2 weeks off, and started my second round of Insanity at 178.4 lbs, and I am now 171.8 lbs. I've been pretty stagnant at that weight the last couple weeks, but I'm not overly concerned, because I have already just about matched my round 1 weight loss. By the way, I'm 5'3" and 30 years old.

I do track with myfitnesspal, and I am rarely hungry. It helps a great deal because after using it for a while, you learn what you can eat without having to log it in before you order your food at a restaurant.

Stay positive, track your calories and measure yourself. Gauge your energy level as well. And remember, everyone doesn't lose 20 lbs in 63 days.

Good luck!

You have been given a lot of great advice on nutrition but I wanted to touch on the workout side. One thing I noticed is that you do the workouts before you eat anything. There are people out there who feel this will help you burn fat; but most likely your body is turning to muscle for energy to get you through the workout. Muscle loss will only set you back (explained next). My first round of insanity I was able to do month 1 workouts right out of bed without eating and only drinking water but when I got to month 2 I "bonked" for a couple workouts and realized my body couldn't do it without some "fuel". One option would be to use some fast absorbing carbs (not something like gatorade) since you are basically working out so early.

My second comment is cardio based workouts will only take you so far. Insanity is my favorite BB workout by far so I'm not trying to cut it short but the more muscle you have the more calories you will burn all day long. Cardio only burns those calories during your workout and for a while after but even that depends on your intensity level. Insanity will work your chest and legs to death but you need to build up those other major muscle groups that a program like P90X works on.

My 2 cents. Hope it helps you and good luck!

A body uses muscle glycogen, not MUSCLE, to get through workouts. Glycogen is a sugar stored as fuel in your muscles and an average person has enough to sustain about 2 hours of exercise. It is replaced quite quickly as you eat or drink carbs after a workout. Actual muscle depletion happens over a much longer term either through endurance expercise (think Western States 100 runs, etc) or when a body is deprived of adequate calories for a long time.

For clarification, Yes like AdStaffAndrew said the body uses glycogen to get through workouts. That is until it runs out/low on glycogen. Which yes is difficult to do if your pre-workout stores are at 100% but if you are doing insanity immediately out of bed and not eating a light carb snack ~30 mins prior you are most likely not at 100% when you start. It's my experience that after fasting 8-10 (sleeping for example) and taking on a HIIT workout with just water you may "bonk". HIIT burns through glycogen much faster than say pacing yourself during a marathon. We can go round and round on this because the process is complex to say the least and there are so many factors involved (your intensity, more muscle allows you to store more glycogen, glycogen burn/fat burn, etc). But the bottom line is I don't know a single person who shows up on race day without fueling themselves ~30mins to an hour before the race start. For a legendary transformation I would fuel myself for workouts the same way I would for a race. Make every workout count and ensure you have the glycogen stores your body needs to "dig deep". If you are truly interested in learning about hydration, electrolyte replenishment, caloric intake, and proper fueling google hammer nutritions fueling handbook. It's a great reference on all of these topics.
