I work graveyards, when is the best time to workout?
I work graveyards, when is the best time to workout?
when is the best time to workout graveyards
1/10/13 11:09 PM
I am a single mother of 4, I teenager in high school and 3 elementary kids. I am in college right now working on getting my masters degree. I work graveyards 5 nights a week. I try to sleep 4 to 5 hours when my kids are in school. I would like to workout when I wake up but I have to pick up my kids from school. Then I try to get a little more sleep before I go to work. I know the best time to workout is first thing in the morning but when your morning is night and your night is morning with everything so hectic I would like to know when is the best time to workout.

Hello Rewolf, you look like you have a very tight schedule there. Personnaly i train out in the evening when my kids go to bed but when i can i also work out in the morning before work.

In your case i would suggest working out after picking up your kids at school. I don't know how much sleep you get after you pick them up but if you can cut on that and train there that would be a good option.

Here some info i found on google

Late Afternoon is Best for Exercise
Research shows that the optimal time to exercise is when our body temperature is at its highest, which, for most people is 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. (body temperature is at its lowest just before waking).
-Strength is Greater in the Afternoon
Dr. Hill reported that strength output is 5% higher at around mid-day; anaerobic performance, such as sprinting, improves by 5% in the late afternoon.
- Endurance is Greater in the Afternoon
Aerobic capacity (endurance) is approximately 4percent higher in the afternoon.
- Injuries Are Less Likely in the Afternoon
Afternoon exercise is the best if you want to avoid injuries for many reasons. We are most alert; our body temperature is the highest so our muscles are warm and flexible; and our muscle strength is at its greatest. These three factors make it less likely that we will get injured.
- Morning Exercisers Are More Consistent
Even though afternoon exercise might be optimal from a physiological standpoint, research also shows that morning exercisers are more likely to stick to it that late-day athletes.
- Evening Exercise and Sleep
Most research supports the idea that exercise can improve sleep quality. But does exercising too late in the evening keep you up? Studies have shown improvements in sleep from both morning and afternoon exercise, so it's not yet clear if evening exercise keeps you up. One study even showed that vigorous exercise half an hour before bedtime did not affect sleep.
One thing that is agreed upon is that sleep deprivation can hinder sports performance.

Hi rewolf,

I got to hand it do your for keeping it together with your busy schedule! A single mom going to school, raising a family, and doing what it takes to put food on the table....my hat goes of too you!

Honestly, find the best time of day that works for you. Unless you are a competitive body builder looking for an edge, the time of day will not matter for you, other than the best time you know that you can get your workout in. If you have to split your workouts into twice a day, then go for it. What workout program are you currently doing?

Let me know if you need further help.

That was very informative, thank you. I do try to work out in the afternoon just before my kids get out of school so that way I know I got it done, but then sometimes I try to do it in the evening right after I drop off my kids at my mom's.

Lately I just have been so tried that I wake up just in time to pick them up and then I try to get a little more sleep before I have to leave.

When I wake up in the evenings I count how many hours I slept that day and most of the time it's 6 hours the most.

I do think about working out as soon as I get home. What do you think?

Thank you. I have the Slim in 6 and I have done them before so I know it works. But this time I am working and going to school. Before I so much time on my hands that I would split my workouts 3 times a day with walking in the morning and the Slim in 6 in the afternoon and then the abs and stretching in the evening.

Yesterday was suppose to be my first day, but with doing a little house work, school meeting, and doctor appointments, I ended up skipping it and sleeping for a total of 5 hours (split in half, 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening).

These past 2 days I am being very aware of what I am eating since I am having trouble with my fasting and I keep thinking, "it will be there tomorrow" "I can do this" "why am I fasing" "it's not going to be the last time that I could have it" "I can eat it another time" or my biggest one "What time is it? I better not. I am going to sleep soon"

Rewolf, This is up to you, if you have enough energy to workout when you come back from work, why not? That way you know nothing gonna disturb you and make you miss your workout.

You really impress me, you are very courageous and motivated toward your workout and your life. Raising those kids alone and going back to school with work in between and still finding time to workout, Just WOW! Keep up the good work and you will succeed for sure!

Thank you. Hearing that makes me feel more motivated to continue to try to reach my goal by February 19th. Then continue on from there to stay in shape.

Hi Rewolf. Kudos on your effort! I don't have kids but I could only imagine. I also work grave shift, 4 ten hour shifts. I had to readjust my whole schedule, which is hard to do if you're set in your ways, just to accomodate all of my daily tasks. Maybe while on a break at work, you can write everything down and figure out a plan? I admit I don't have much advice to offer, but if you need someone to chat with or share ideas with, I'm game. Good luck!
