I want to gain weight - Need nutritional advice
For starters, I am an Insanity grad and I'm currently in the middle of my 2nd week with the Asylum. I'm a male, 32 years old, 5'9" and weigh 143 lbs. I've always had difficulty gaining weight... to the point of frustration, almost. Everything I read (or can find online) are people wanting to lose weight and body fat during these workouts, not gain. I want to gain weight and have that "beach body" many achieve from these programs. When it comes to eating, I go through cycles. I'm a father of a single income family, so spending a lot of money on food isn't a realistic scenario for me (that would be too easy).

All that said, my meal plan during the day is as follows:
Breakfast: Bowl of Wheaties, 2% milk, cup of coffee
Snack: Protein PowerBar
Lunch: 2x peanut butter sandwiches on white bread
Snack: Pro Complex Gainer shake (Optimum Nutrition) w/ 2% milk
Dinner: Chicken breast, 1 cup of Jasmine rice, Salad greens w/ Italian dressing, glass of chocolate milk following workout

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Chalaph -

Awesome program!!! Congrats on Insanity...that program is no joke!! I was in the same shoes as you not too long ago....just wanting to put on size and try to shred up. I have been addicted to P90x and have been loving it ever since I started a year and a half ago. In my experiences, I have found P90x and Bodybeast to be the programs to use to put on size. Most people will do these programs first as they are resistance based programs and help build muscle. Asylum and Insanity are cardio based programs and will not help in the initial stages of trying to gain muscle size. Many folks will put on the size and then use Insanity or Asylum to cut up!

Knwoing and understanding how nutrition works is of the ultimate importance when doing your program...to lose or gain....and it my case, as is yours, it was to gain muscle size. I went from 163 to a solid 173 in just my first round of P90x....and that is with figuring out how nutrition plays a role.

I can certainly help you with this as I do this with all of my team members. Knowing what your daily caloric intake level is is certainly the foundation of your meal plan...whether it be to gain or lose!

If this is soemthing you would like help with let me know as I am willing to assist you any way I can!! I look forward to hearing from you!!!

Congrats on graduating Insanity. Gaining weight with Asylum is going to be hard but not impossible. Obviously to gain weight you need to eat more than what your body burns every day. Your nutrition could use some work.

For breakfast, I would aim for egg whites and oatmeal instead of cereral. Since you want to gain weight. I would say something like 1 cup of oatmeal with 1 cup of egg whites. For lunch, have a tuna sandwhich, take 1.5 cans of tuna with an avocado and 2 slices of whole wheat bread or you can eat chicken with brown rice. Your supper looks good.

CoachFrank and Danny,

Thank you for the replies and for offering advice/guidance.

I was a police officer for 6 years before changing career paths. I remember one day someone telling me on a traffic stop that I looked like I needed to eat a sandwich. Humorous as it was, he did receive a citation that day. emoticon

I've always been in good shape, overall. I can run like a gazelle, but have never been able to accomplish a true body transformation. I've had a couple trainers that started off well, but when they mentioned wanting to introduce questionably legal supplements, I severed that relationship and walked away.

During Insanity I began eating better... and more to keep up with the calories I'm burning. I like the idea of oatmeal and/or eggs for breakfast and a different sandwich for lunch. I am also appreciative that your suggestion is budget friendly.

Should I cut out the Pro Complex Gainer shake and start taking something else? I hear RAVE things about Shakeology as an additional meal, but I'm not sure it's affordable at this point. I say that, but will also say that if I would likely experience a dramatic benefit towards reaching my goal in 30, 60, or 90 days with Shakeology in my diet I just might pony up the expense and do it. Or, would you recommend I replace the Gainer w/ ON Gold Standard Whey w/ a banana and other ingredients?

Hope my questions aren't bothersome. I appreciate your help!

-Mike

Im not a fan of gainers are they contain a lot of fillers that don't do much for you. The best way to gain weight is to eat more food, good food. Just add an extra piece of bread to your lunch, eat more chicken or sweet potatoes for supper. You can totally add another Whey protein shake with some fruits to up your calories. If you want to make your own kind of gainer, throw in some oatmeal and fruit or veggies.

I personally wouldnt go without Shakeology, I have more energy with it. It's helped me fight colds and other viruses. If you like Shakeology you can sign up as a coach to save 25% or there's the club membership that you save 10%.

We have plenty of people in our team that are gaining mass, most of them are doing it with Body Beast but I would say that the majority arent taking any type of gainers. Pure clean eating over!
