Weight Loss and Gaining Strength
weight loss and gaining strength

I'm 28 years old, 5'2" and weigh 130lbs. I've finally committed to doing P90X Classic. In May I'll be hiking/backpacking the Kalalau Trail, Kauai. It's a 11 mile hike one way, and it's gonna be hot and humid (I'm from Canada). I've done lots of hiking/backpacking in the mountains in Canada, but I really want to be in great shape for Kalalau. Me and my boyfriend are a week into p90x and its going great! I have one concern, I do want to lose weight and gain strength (so I can be a better pack horse emoticon), but if I'm doing weight training will I gain muscle under my pre-existing fat layer and look even chubbier? I want to be stronger but I don't want to "bulk up". I'm also strictly counting calories (cant go over 1200) and eating balanced meals. At the end of the day I've taken in anywhere from 1000 - 1200 calories then minus the additional calories I've burned with p90x workouts. Will this make me successful to lose the weight I want and gain the strength or is there something else I should be incorporating to achieve this?
Thanks! Look forward to some feedback!

Hi, and welcome to the boards, to answer your questions.

- You won't bulk up doing weights, you will get your muscles toned and defined, woman don't have the capability of bulking up ,unless you get really into weight lifting and taking steroids, so don't worry about the the weight lifting in P90X. Remember you fat layer is diminishing while your muscle is building up.

- You are having to little calories, You need 1,650 to build muscle and lose weight (about 1 lb/ week). The 1,200 calories aren't even enough to keep your body basic functions, you need to eat more (following the nutrition guide) to get fitter. No, you won't get fatter.

Hey Hrsawula...

I agree. You aren't eating enough which will only sabotage your efforts. Females can't bulk up. As far as your concern with the layer of fat over your building muscles making you look fat...that's not going to happen either. With P90X, you'll be burning fat and building muscles...so you'll be burning that layer of fat off those new muscles and building muscles also helps your body burn fat...win, win =)

Calories...you need at least 1300 to live, to breathe, to sit on the couch and do nothing. Then you need calories to work, so that's around 1560. Then you actually need calories FOR your workout...to have enough energy to do the intense workout so add at least 500 for a p90x workout. That puts you needing to live, work, and workout a total of 2060. The you can deduct 500 for a pound loss. So I have you around 1560. Everybody is different so you have to play with it, and this is just an estimate but to only show that you aren't eating enough. Never go below 1200 NET without talking to a doctor. You'll go into starvation mode. Your body will start using muscle mass as fuel...not good.

WOW on the trip!!! How exciting!!! Is this something y'all have had planned for a while? I'm envious!!! How cool!!
