Body beast Lean or bulk?
workout muscle mass lifting weights metabolism lean program beast body beast insights body beast for women
1/22/13 9:56 AM
Hello I'm wondering if I can ask everyone a quick question....

I'm really unsure on which beast workout to do. I do have some weight to lose about 10 pounds but my main purpose for doing beast is to increase my muscle mass and metabolism. As a woman I know I won't get huge and muscle will reshape me physically. Lifting weights doesn't scare or intimidate me either. Since adding muscle will increase my metabolism would doing the lean program benefit me or should I just do the bulk. I used to lift weights and be rather fits but I haven't made a priority for a little while.

I would appreciate any input or insights!
Thanks, sjade

I would suggest you go with the lean version of Body Beast and run a light calorie deficit to lose the 10 pounds you want to get rid off.

I would go with your maintenance calorie or go even a little lower instead of adding 10-20% more calories so you can shred off the fat through the program.

I'm in agreement with Dominic. Monitor your gains after one month and move forward from there. Lifting at maintenance for a while or a bit above calorie-wise is going to burn through BF (maybe not as quickly as Insanity or P90X) but you should still notice quick reduction.

Also, you own both lean and huge emoticon! With fitness being a life-long endeavor, you can do the 'huge' version for your second round if your BF has come down to where you want it (aka seeing definition).

Heya, sjade. You probably saw my message to you on the Buddy list, so I'm just repeating myself here.

I really had great results with Lean Beast - lost fat pounds, lost inches, gained muscle mass, gained strength. Weight was not my #1 concern, but ripping the belly fat off was, and my body fat % went from 28 to 18.

I plan on doing another round of Lean Beast in a few weeks - I'm working through my challenge with Les Mills Combat right now - I want to get another round of Lean Beast in, and then test myself on either P90X or X2. I will probably set myself up for a round of Huge Beast later in the year - maybe around the end of Summer.

My only advice is, whichever way you go, Lean or Huge, do the measurements and fitness test before you start, and then again at 30 days so you can track your progress and see where you are. That will give you the info you need to make smart calorie intake adjustments.

Let me know if I can help, and keep me posted on your progress.

Thank you for your thoughts! I'm going to do the lean program and keep calorie intake to maintenance. I will reassess and adjust as needed.

Hey Sjade! I think that this calls for a Beastette answer;). I am finishing Round 2 of Body Beast this week with incredible results. I believe however that 90% of this is diet because as Sagi says, Abs are made in the kitchen.I have done HUGE both rounds because I teach P90X at gyms several times a week and do alot of extra cardio there. I have gained a great amount of muscle all over. I am leaning down in the competion plan this week to trim up my abs. You have to gain everywhere to gain where you need it. It will absolutely gain muscle mass and speed your metabolism. As far as losing 10 lbs, the program is not intended for weight loss. It will tone you in ways that you would never imagine. I did P90X x4, Insanity, X2 and have maximized my results in minimal time with Beast. We have a group of awesome women doing beast on fb too with awesome results. I would be happt to answer any questions that you may have through this journey. The program has been so good to me and I am paying it forward. Beast Up!;)

Wow. Did you modify the program at all or do it (nutrition and exercise) exactly as is?

Well, "exactly" might be stretching it a bit, but I *did* stick as closely as I could to the Lean Beast program, especially from the diet stand-point.

I computed my daily calorie intake for the "Build" and "Bulk" phases - about 2800 calories - and adhered to the 25/50/25 (percentage of calories in protein/carb/fat) guideline. Then, for the "Beast" phase, it calls for a 10% reduction in total calorie intake - down to about 2600 for me - and changing the macro-nutrient composition to 40/30/30.

From the start of the Lean/Beast program, I lost 14 pounds - took about 4 months to do it - but the best part was going from a 39 inch waist to 35 inches, because I knew that getting that pre-diabetic belly off was critical to my health. My goal is 34 inches, and I'm sure I'll be getting there soon. If my weight happens to drop to my eventual target of 185, that will be good, too. But not as critical as getting the belly fat out of here! I won't object if I stay above 185, as long as the weight is lean muscle mass.

I used the body fat estimator here at TBB, without calipers, and input my age, sex, weight, and waist size. Whether the estimator is good enough without using the pinch calipers or not, I think as long as you use the same method each time, you'll at least get an indication of how you are progressing - consistent measurement is key.

I did Beast Lean, and I found the results were as advertised...bulk plus weight loss.
My understanding is that the programs work exactly as they promise.

HeatherBell...

How much weight are you lifting in Body Beast? I don't think I am lifting heavy enough, but I am unsure how high I should go. I am using
10-201b dumbbells and 20-35 total with EZ Curl bar.

Shannyk , everybody is different and you the proper way to know if you are lifting enough is that you have to struggle in the last 2-3 reps to finish.

Example if you are doing a 15 reps set, you should be close to failure at reps 12 and pretty much fail at the last reps or so.

If you are doing a 15 reps set and by the end of the set you feel you could still do more reps it means that you can lift heavier. Just make sure that you are not sacrficing good form by adding more weight.

There's only one real way to find out. Lift a little bit heavier next time. If you can do all the reps with good form, you were going too light the last time. If you can only get a few reps and/or your form is terrible, you were at the right weight previously. If you're somewhere in between (perhaps you can only get 6 reps instead of 8 before you have to drop the weights), it's your discretion.
