p90x/Insanity Hybrid advice
p90x/Insanity Hybrid advice

Hi everyone! Been doing insanity now for three weeks and I'm on my third rest day - three weeks in! Week 4 coming up! I'm pretty stoked!

I've been really having to dig deep doing insanity this past week. Pulled my left wrist in krav maga class, got my nose broken, and my instructor there works our affes off cardio wise (three days a week) - no krav today on a rest day - which is awesome!

I'm a tad sore needless to say - which is good.

I'll be leaving for the US Army this summer for basic training, medic school and airborne/jump school. I'm really worried about not being able to score a 300 on my APFT which is 71 push-ups, 78 locked behind the head sit-ups, and a 2 mile run in under 13:00 minutes.

Out of curiosity - could I add a core abdominal routine from p90x or body beast 1 extra day per week right now? If so, during which routine(s)? Should I just substitute sit-up and push-up sets as a secondary workout?

My sit-ups are a little weak right now - so thinking I may need some extra strength training there. Only able to hit 41 to 50 sit ups in 1 minute (depending on how hard I've hammered myself in workouts that day). I'm also looking for some additional bicep strength (I'm doing pull-ups whenever I come in or out of the house right now)

My muscle groups are nearly gassed at the end of one minute rocking them out doing push ups and sit ups. (I still have another minute to go).

Any advice? I'm wondering if I should switch to a p90x/insanity hybrid right now as opposed to later... Any routine advice for maximizing push-ups and sit ups? Or just do AbRipper-X 13 days a week? emoticon

I need the cardio and endurance obviously for the years to come, but I'd love to maximize muscle strength/endurance as well - before I ship out!

Thanks for your help everyone!

Wow! Thank you for your service. I think if you don't already do them, start adding plank and plank moves into your core routines. This will really help you build your core strength. Love Insanity!

I do think for your goals, an Insanity/P90X hybrid may be best. You will get a more pushups and different types in P90X. How fast are you running now? Insanity definitely helped my running/endurance.

I think you need to make sure you give your muscles time to recover as well. They need time to repair, Abs included. If you work them everyday its going to be counterproductive. I think following a pure P90X/Insanity hybrid will get you to your goal. I would build in check points for your specific tests. How much are you running?

Hi Christina! Thanks for your help!

I'm currently running 2-3 days a week. I know it should be more - but SO tired.

I've got the following going on:
  • high school still
  • homework
  • high school weight training *its over in 3 days! yeah!*
  • krav maga 3 days a week
  • girlfriend *she is really irritated with me - due to my busy schedule*
  • future soldiers training/PT once a week
  • Insanity at 5:30am every day

I can knock out my two mile in just under 14:00 right now if I commit to throwing up emoticon

I was watching the p90x Chest and Back & Chest and Shoulders videos... I SO need those in my routine. I also really need to be running 4 days a week. You are absolutely right though, Insanity has gotten me running much faster in my one mile sprints - but I need more "on the track" time.

I'm thinking about the hybrid and maybe substituting two programs a week to a long run. I love plyo and core syn - so I don't want to scrap those emoticon

I'll pull up the hybrid calendar and see if I can tweak it. I have the feeling I've got a morning workout and an evening run no matter what I try otherwise it will be unbalanced...

Any ideas? If I commit to the hybrid program should I take a 3 day recovery doing Core Cardio and Balance before starting?

Whatcha think?

One hybrid that I really like is:

Wks 1-3
1. P90X Chest & Back AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
2. Insanity Plyo Cardio Circuit
3. P90X shoulder & Arms AND Insanity's Cardio abs
4. Insanity Cardio Recovery
5. P90X Legs & Back/Cardio Abs
6. Insanity Pure Cardio
7. Rest

Wks 4, 8, & 13
Recovery Weeks

Weeks 5-7
1. P90X Shoulders & Triceps AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
2. Insanity Power and Resistance
3. P90X Back & Biceps AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
4. Insanity Cardio Recovery
5. P90X Legs & Back AND Cardio Abs
6. Insanity Pure Cardio
7. Rest

Wks 9 & 11
1. P90X Chest & Back AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
2. Insanity Max Interval Plyo
3. P90X Shoulder & Arms AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
4. Insanity Max Recovery
5. P90X Legs & Back AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
6. Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning
7. Rest

Wks 10 & 12
1. P90X Chest Shoulders & Triceps AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
2. Insanity Max Interval Circuit
3. P90X Back & Biceps AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
4. Insanity Max Recovery
5. P90X Legs & Back AND Insanity's Cardio Abs
6. Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning
7. Rest

You definitely need a day in between working your abs, working them everyday can be bad. However, maybe you can do Ab Ripper X and Cardio Abs right after another, to get in an extra 15 minutes on your abs. Also, instead of doing their videos on the recovery days/weeks, you can work on your running then so you're not so tired that you can't push yourself to your goal.

But I'd definitely add in P90X for muscle.

Good luck!

Oh and yes, you should recover slightly after doing Insanity to going to the hybrid. Either doing their recover workouts or running should do.

Hi All,

I've gone twice with P90X but never reached the last month either time. I think I get kinda bored. I recently got Insanity to do a hybrid with because I love Plyo and want to mix things up a little. I'm only 4'11" and weigh 95 lbs so losing weight is not what I'm aiming for. I see some results with P90X but I'm not getting the definition I'm looking for. I have a high metabolism even without working out so I'm wondering what the best way to approach this is. I'm aiming to gain definition, muscle and tone. Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! What results have you seen? Are you looking to gain muscle? What do you mean my definition? How much are you eating?

Cheers,
Christina

Hi,

Result I've seen is the beginning of my abs and when I flex my arms, my muscles are definately there. I just can't seem to get that lean muscle look. I admit, I haven't been counting my calories but I eat every 2-3 hrs with mostly healthy foods. I tried calorie counting at one point but it became a bit hard for me since I eat lots of home cooked Asian foods and I don't know how to count that.
