Lean or Bulk?
Lean or Bulk?
1/23/13 11:03 PM
Being a P90X graduate, I am fond of not having much fat on my body now. But I have turned to Body Beast to bulk up and gain some muscle mass. So which should I go for? Lean or Bulk? I don't want to just balloon up and have muscles but then have a belly as I've seen some bodybuilders do. But I understand I will need to up my calories, but I don't know which program to start Lean Beast? Or Bulk Beast?

Go with Bulk. You will not look like Sagi and those other body builders after doing 90 days of Body Beast. It took those guys years to get those bodies. Bulk Beast will help you gain some weight and get bigger/more ripped. It will not make you balloon up like Sagi for example. Their diet is also to eat a lot, but eat healthy. So if you follow the diet and keep working out hard, you wont have any problems.

What is your goal gain muscle mass? Or you still want to lose some weight?

If you still want to lose a little weigth and build some muscle mass you could do the lean version and go with a light calorie deficit so you still lose weight.

If you don't mind gaining some body fat and want to pack muscle go with bulk version and add 10-20% from calorie than your maintenance caloric need.

My mentality is bulk all the way, even at the mass amounts you eat and train you only gain 5-10lbs of muscle. You can run off the fat later. If you start now, you can begin a shredding program in 3 months, right in time for that Spring break to summer. Doing lean will get you some mass, but if you want to gain anyways, you might as well try to gain as much as possible in the allotted time.

You want to be bigger, maybe gain 20lbs of muscle or something and then stop. Why go multiple rounds at less than 100% to get there, when you can get there quicker going 100%+ balls to the wall to reach the mark.

I did Huge the first round and have been doing Lean during an extended second round, my weight and mass have increased about the same both ways. I like to include the extra cardio component in once a week, and I like the way the Lean Bulk Phase is laid out 6 days a week doing the same exercise the same days of the week. I also teach P90X classes once a week and substitute that for my Beast Cardio workout depending on the routine.

That said, if your goal is strictly to get as big as you can as fast as you can then I agree with the comments above, stick to the Huge schedule and pound the groceries and pound the weights!
