Motivating Your Spouse!!!
workout health problems
1/24/13 2:03 PM
I recently started doing Insanity and I am, in no means a "fit" person but I'm trying to become healthier. My problem is, since I've been with my husband, we've gain a LOT of weight! (He has gained about 50lbs and myself about 15lbs) And everytime we've joined the gym, I'm the only one that goes. So I decided to cancel our membership and get Insanity. Now, it's been about 2 weeks since I got the dvd's and he still refused to workout at all. I need some help motivating him to wanna workout with me without me feeling like I'm nagging him. He refuses to workout in front of me and he keeps making excuses about not being able to do any of it, but he never even tries. I NEED SOME MAJOR HELP!!!! His eating habits are horrible and he smokes on top of everything else. I don't wanna see he suffer with major health problems!

Ok first off let me say that you are so not alone! Lol! This happens a lot that we get comfortable in our lives and gain weight. That being said, you have obviously made up your mind which is the first step for you! Insanity will give you great results and you will be so happy you did it!
Now, as far as your hubby, you could go about it a few ways but ultimately it will come down to him making up his mind. I do have a few suggestion and questions. Does he say that HE wants to lose weight and get healthier? Sometimes lets face it, men like things to be their idea...hehe, so one way to go at it could be baby steps, you do your thing and be the example and then he may see your progress and follow! Next, do you think you can get him to agree to eat what you eat for dinner, or whatever meals you can eat together? That can be a baby step, find some yummy healthy recipes and introduce it! By the way, these suggestions are coming from experience, my hubby was the same way!
So he doesn't want to work out with you? Ok no biggie, has he ever excersized before? If he did what was his thing? what does he like? then we can figure out how to motivate him towards the goalemoticon Sorry for the 20 questions just want to make sure I can help as best as possibleemoticon

Yes, many people do find themselves in the situation. First you need to look at what your goal is - to get healthy and in shape. GREAT! But you can not make or set a goal for another person - just as you can not make someone quit smoking - they must do it on their own.

My best advice (I've been married 25 fabulous years) is to workout, and eat well. The first thing that will happen is he will be eating the same foods as you, and that will help.

Also, keep working out. As you continue to improve he MAY see that and be movitaved by it.... then again I have also seen it go in the totally opposite direction.

Do not nag or try to drag him along. it doesnt work. He'll jump onboard with you or he wont. Try discussing how much fun your having - and may Insanity just doesnt interest him - maybe he's a P90X guy...

Good luck! And keep up the good work!

Donna

Hi!! I felt inclined to write because I totally feel you!! I'm on week 3 of Insanity currently. My husband and I have been together almost 10 years...he played competitive soccer from the age of 4, then played college football. AKA...he'd been working out his whole life practically. After college...he WILL NOT work out. His weight has fluctuated, but he has ultimately gained around 40lbs. I'm a nurse and heart disease runs in his family so I've done the nagging, bribing, coaxing, etc and have found, like the others have said, he has to make that choice on his own. I've actually found, that when I leave him alone he actually will eat better and will show a little interest in working out every now and thenemoticon We do eat the same things for meals...which are healthy now. So I'm just hoping when he sees my results and that I can do it, that he will just at least TRY. It's only 60 days and in the scheme of life, that's really not that much to ask right?!? Haha! That, and men drop weight so fast, its disgusting...so they'd only have to start and would probably see results which would keep them goingemoticon Good luck and good for you for being proactive with your own health! When he wants to change, he will (which can't happen soon enough, trust me, I know)...just like youemoticon I really hope my husband makes the decision soon as well!

Thanks so much for all the advice! I love doing Insanity and he hates it! He complains about the jumping so I got P90X from my cousin and played it like a movie to get him to at least watch it. He said that look more like what he could do. (it had less jumping around and more weight lifting) As far as the food goes, I'm in trouble! I work a lot of crazy hours and so he goes to my parents house to eat dinner and he goes out with his co-workers for lunch instead of taking his lunch. (That's another issue!!) lol He came from a home that eats junk ALL the time! Snack cakes, cookies, sodas, cakes, etc..... It's awful! He never really had to workout in the past and was always semi-toned but now that we're married, he just lets himself go cause "he's married and doesn't have to impress anyone anymore!" emoticon

Just had a thought! Have you told him about the beachbody challenge and that he can win prizes by logging in his workouts? Maybe that will get him going and if you guys joined a group together, maybe that would help! Just a thought!

Well - it's good that he may be interested in P90X.

A couple of more ideas, first, it's very very common that when some people get married they "let themselves go" wethers its because they feel they dont have to impress someone or that while merging into a new home and lifestyle (you mentioned how his family eats) you eat differently.

Have you thought about doing a hybrid of P90X and Insanity to maybe get him to see you doing P90X and he may jump in and try one or two with you - but as I mentioned above I wouldnt push him - let it be his idea (or let him think that LOL)

Keep cooking and serving healthy foods - that will help him. figure out how many calories he should be taking in each day as well he may not track it but it will give you an idea when cooking on portion sizes.

Drop by the thread I started if you get a chance - its full of great ideas on doing P90X. message thread link

Good Luck - hang in there!! You are doing great - don't let his not working out keep you from reaching your goals!
