Calorie intake
2/7/13 3:58 AM
I did p90x a while back and plateaued on my weight loss. I am pretty sure I was not eating enough but I was afraid to up my calorie intake. A long time ago I did increase my intake and lost weight so I know it works but back then I was in the gym 1.5 hours a day at least. I did my calories like I was training to be an athlet. Now I am doing les mills combat work outs in the morning. I always wear a heart monitor and on a good 30 minute workout I burn 400 calories. If I up the intensity I hit 500 - 550. A 45 min I hit 600. I work out 5 days a week with videos and go to the gym once. Is that enough to eat like an athlete again?. The rest of the day I set at my job for the most part. I am 6'2'' my weight is stuck around 245. I eat a heavy protein diet. Not really paleo but I am doing another 2 weeks of just protein to try and shake my weight loss lose...basically phase one of Atkins or south beach...then I will add back my salads and sweet potatoes. Thoughts ?

You are right on few fronts, the first being that if you don't eat enough you will stop losing weight, that much is true. Your body will slow its metabolism down and stop burning what you give it each day causing you to stop losing. I can tell you I am also doing Combat. I am 5'9" and 145 or so. I am eating between 2200 and 2400 calories a day while doing the workouts in order to maintain my weight. If you are looking to lose weight. I would say shoot for around 2400 calories a day to start and see how your hunger and energy feels then adjust from there. Another important thing is to make sure you are tracking you macros. The program suggests going for a 40/30/30 carbs/protein/fat split so shoot for that. I track those using myfitnesspal.com if you don't have an account to it or something similar you should get one. If you do use my fitness pal let me know and I will post the instructions on how to set it up to track the 40/30/30 split.

Hope this is helpful, I will keep an eye on the thread and answer any other questions. Feel free to buddy me if you need anything, I am glad to help you out. I have lost 121 lbs since deciding to get fit and now love helping others get the same results.

First off, good work on paying such close attention to your nutrition.

I think you'd probably be better off taking a more balanced approach to your macros, though. In the very least, you'll benefit from adding some fat to your diet, as it is essential in nutrient absorption, hormone production, and body fat metabolism, so that's something to think about.

I also think it's very important to have at least some carbs, so yes, add in those salads and lightly steamed veggies to give yourself key phytonutrients and add bulk to your diet.

Other than that, take the approach that Justin suggested above and I think you'll do fine.

Thanks for the feedback I do need to probably change it to a more balanced targeted diet. But does any one know what calorie burn is really a high enough to be considered to be at a level to warrant an athletic diet? I am a numbers person so aim wanting find that number to shoot for to get that balance. Does that make sense?

I don't know that calorie burn has as much to do with it as workout frequency and intensity. If you're training 5-6 days/week at a high intensity level, then I'd say you can probably follow an athletic diet and be okay.

Does that makes sense?

I agree with this 110%. If you're doing a hard workout 5 or 6 days a week you are an athlete.
