LIFE ACCORDING TO THE BEASTS Coach OwenDaniel's Thread
p90x insanity motivation accountability success cardio workouts hybrids mma beast frustrations sense of humor accomplishments asylum achievements conversations body beast
2/8/13 2:02 PM
Hello Fellow Beasts! This thread is borne of an original Body Beast Challenge Coaching thread. The few (and proud)of us who have continued to share our experiences have decided to create our own thread. We have been exchanging accomplishments, frustrations, support and motivation for the better part of three or four months now. We have realized that we have created a community that has grown from the Body Beast program to include workouts from other programs, hybrids if you will. We have also learned that we don't want to be restricted in our fitness journeys to just one program done one way. Currently, we have someone doing the Body Beast in its classic Lean form, another varying Beast workouts with Cardio from Insanity and Asylum and MMA workouts and yet another mixing the results from the Beast with an adventure into Insanity. All have something to share which may resonate with you!

Who would this thread appeal to? It is our intent to continue our daily conversations here addressing accountability and mutual support and respect. The people we feel will find this a comfortable place to post are interested in bringing their results beyond what is prescribed in the programs. They aren't afraid to challenge themselves and their comfort levels, they accept that great change requires great effort and an openness to try to incorporate supplemental workouts in their routines. To sum it up nicely, people who want to go beyond what they think they are capable of. We also have a sense of humor here so, bring an open mind and realize that we celebrate our accomplishments in individual ways. Some of us are quite serious and others are quite flip. The one thing we all have in common, we want to achieve the best results possible.
So, if you are looking for a safe and respectful place to ask questions, share accomplishments, compare programs, discuss supplements, confess to nutritional sins, or generally seeking motivation, this may very well become a new home for you.

A little about me. I have been involved with Beachbody programs since my first P90X program in 2008. I have completed multiple rounds of that and I still consider it my favorite program, so far (but, the Body Beast is quickly challenging for the top spot on my list). I was 2 weeks into P90X2 when the Body Beast was delivered and immediately switched and completed 2 rounds. I have recently begun Insanity, which I never thought I'd have the guts to do, and am currently in my fourth week. In August of 2012, I decided to take advantage of the Coaching option and became an Independent Team Beachbody Coach. I joined our original challenge thread started by a wonderful Coach, Joe Petri, to gain inspiration, motivation and support and it has helped me along my journey. I am hoping to launch this thread as a place my fellow Beasts can feel comfortable and welcome yet challenged to bring more than they thought they were capable of.

Bring your opinions, bring your observations, bring your sincerity, bring a sense of humor, bring a willingness to work hard, but most of all.......... bring your commitment to a healthier lifestyle!

Keep Moving Forward!

so its good to start a thread with lazy day huh? its my rest day and stretching gonna do p90x x stretch.

im the guy doing the body beast/cardio/conditioning hybrid. alot of people have asked me why im doign a body building program with so much cardio. well its simple. i want the power from weight lifting but still want athletic performance. which the beast seriously lacks. im more then willing to sacrafice size for over all fitness. so i am supplementing a couple conditioning work outs and cardio work outs into body beast. its body beast with a p90x calander layout. lift day, cardio day, lift day, conditioning day ect till all muscle groups are worked with a stretch/yoga at the end of it all.

i will also be playing the crass un polished yet caring and helpful wild card.

post stretch LOL. this is the first time i have done yoga/x stretch in about a year. so i can say this in plow/sholder stand i made a huge advancement. today was the first day my moobs and neck fat didnt squish my throat and i didnt see my belly falling on my face in this postion... wow. its a surreal think to think about that i used to have a gut that dunlaped in my face on headnd stands... and my little peks used to be c cup man boobs. it was such standard paractice that when i roled back to do it i instictivly pushed my shirt at the belly area down and straighted out my chest area of my shirt... as i loaded what was happening i laughed and said 'oh yeah i used to have bitch tits'

Hey this is GREAT! I love this thread already! Great inspiration (and an impressive history of challenges and accomplishments) from Owen in the first post, and classic Bane in the second (man boobs -- the international language of fun -- I had 'em, too, not too long ago; kind of miss 'em, but mostly don't). To these two great personalities, I'll add my own bland, white bread (but low on carbs and whole grain) two cents every day!

TODAY was Bulk Shoulders. It was a day Owen suggested I focus on after a bit of a setback in this, my 2nd week of my 2nd round of Body Beast.

OK, it wasn't perfect -- I still buckled in my 8 rep set of Arnold Press (I think there's a bit of me psyching myself out going on, but also -- it's heavy and my stamina for shoulder work isn't ideal). BUT I did better than last time, and I moved up nicely on upright rows with the EZ bar, and on the Reverse Fly progressive set. I have a plan on how to face the Arnold Press next time, too, confronting the stamina issue slowly.

I LOVE how Owen and Bane have both come up with hybrid approaches involving both cardio and muscle work. I'm not expert, but I, too, have sensed a need for both in me! I'm currently NOT doing a hybrid -- just plain "Lean" Beast. BUT I am going at a calorie deficit, and have adjusted my meals to lower the carbs and fat (more like the P90X Fat Shredder plus moderate carbs than like the Build/Bulk phase macros). I.e., I don't expect to gain much mass during this round of Body Beast, and rather hope to retain the muscle I have while trimming some of the fat. So far so good -- my metrics indicate muscles are staying put while the waist and body fat (two problem areas for me) are improving slowly. Next measurements are tomorrow.

A long road ahead, but I'm pleased with the progress. After I complete Body Beast I plan on doing a round of Insanity (again) with a lot of attention on the meal plan, and an express goal of reducing body fat percentage more (target number to be determined, but 10% sounds so great, although a stretch from my current circa 20%!).

I've picked up my bass guitar recently, and while it won't interfere with my Beast workouts, it's nice to make progress on some rock and roll for a change.

Talk soon
Lee

And Bane -- Yoga X always, ALWAYS kicked my butt. Plough was OK for me, but some moves, and the fact it was 90 minutes -- jeez! Regardless, great to hear the progress!! I'll be smiling when, eventually, I'm doing Yoga X again and get to plough!

if yo upick up x2 the yoga x2 is only an hour but for me tis too long and hurt my feet. dont feel bad about failing the body beast program is designed to work you to failure. how many of the demonstraiters dropped the weights and sagi encouraged em and complemented them on droppign the weights. failure will just make you stronger... i always wanted to play drums but no room in the apt and dont think my neighbors would like me learning.

Checking in here with the Beasts!
Thanks to both of you for making the thread switch. I hope we can continue here as well as we have in the past.
Bane: I love the outline of your program. I think this is the first time I have an accurate picture of how you've set up your program. Nicely done and as per your posts, it's working well. You really should think about entering the before and after contest. Who knows, a picture (and story) may be worth a thousand words (read: bucks).

Lee: nice work with the shoulder workouts. I knew you'd go after that one this time round and sounds like you gave it a go! Great! also, I love how you are working the nutrition program to fit your goals. I wish more people would realize that you have to FIND OUT what works for you! Outstanding!

So far today, my workout has been 2 hours of shoveling snow. If you don't think that's a workout, you must live in a lower latitude....Hah! Next on the agenda is a little 1500 calorie lunch....You wish you could, you know it. Then Bulk Shoulders. Lee, we can compare results and efforts later.
My plantar fascitis is feeling better. Not 100% yet but, a day or two and back to INSANITY!

Hello Beasts! Wonderful snowy day here in the Northeast. Got some light cardio and core work in earlier throwning the white stuff around, the natural kind, of course! It's been about two years since I really did the "shivel snow" workout. I kicked it's butt, if I may say so!
Tackled the Bulk Shoulders this evening. I remember how much I enjot these Beast workouts. I am slowly healing (foot) and will be hitting Insanity again tomorrow or Monday at the latest, I hope. Also, got me a new book to read. You guys remember Beware03, he an I stay in contact. I originally got him interested in NROL4Life as I was doing it, he reciprocated with NROL Supercharged as a greater challenge. That's my new read! I'll keep you posted.

Shoulders left me wanting since the last time I've done it. It was Jan 3 2013 when I last recorded my results and I gotta say, i have dropped a bit with the weight selection. Overall though, a really good PUMP! My muscles miss the strain of heavy weights. I am really going to mix it up after Insanity...........Stay tuned for that hybrid!

Side Laterals and Arnold Presses: 5lbs lighter overall. Presses were a bit stronger as I came within my last at 30s/35s/40s/30s. side laterals were less at: 10s/15/16.5s emoticon
Upright rows took a hit. Struggled with 70/75/80/75/70/65
Alt front Raises: (killer) 10s/11.5s/15s and a GIANT sigh of relief when done emoticon
Plate Twist down 10 lbs to 25.
Superman and Plank twists holding strong.

So Lee, after today I am thinking that maybe form in the arnold presses may be of concern. I noticed that when I rotate outward on the upward motion, I tend to slump on the bench. I paused the Beast dvd so as not to compete with his timing and "slowed my roll" as mini-me (he's 15 says) and seemed to concentrate on ROM much better. Just sayin'.....

bane: I am going to check out the P90X2 yoga on your suggestion. It's been since June that I have done that one an 1 hour sounds infinitely shorter than 90 minutes at this point. I am getting used to getting my workouts done in less than 1 hour thanks to the Beast and Insanity back to back. i don't know how I'm a gonna do when I need to block out 1 hour and 20 minutes for a P90X workout, spoiled I guessemoticon

Hope you all are pushin play today, looking forward to hearing from you later.

'Til later............................Keep Moving Forward!

Hi folks,

And today was my day off. Only news is maybe, just maybe, my fat loss is working while I'm retaining muscle. Like last week, my metrics are pointing in a good direction.

Owen: I hear what you're saying about form during the Arnold presses. Indeed I sense I might need to watch mine: I have been putting the bench up to 90 degrees, and I noticed it's a lot "easier" if I lean back against it, including putting my head against it (though I still buckled last time). I wondered if I was "cheating" in a way. Overall, my plan is to see if I can address stamina; thinking about going down a notch in weights (especially for the higher weight reps), and really watching my form, doing them with good tempo. I did great just a week ago, so I don't think it's too far off. Having said that, I think shoulders is just not my strong suit (while I do fairly well on some back exercises).

Love your numbers on those presses -- even if you've decreased, they're great!

Bane: Indeed, take care of your kidlet! They make us smile (plus all the helpful things you've mentioned!). Still impressed you're doing Insanity along with Body Beast! I think I'll leave my Insanity weeks until April (I've done an Insanity / P90X hybrid some time ago, but I think "not now; I'll hit Insanity later". Maybe I'm being lazy!).

Talk soon,
Lee

OK guys, Bulk Chest today. As with last week's workouts, I saw a continuation of the recent trend of "not huge week to week improvements", BUT 1) I can see that I didn't have compelling evidence I was ready to move up a lot anyway, and 2) I do think I can move up some next time! I plan to pull out the 60 pounders for the initial incline presses (by the 2nd set I will be toast, so no way!). Not much sweat from this workout, but I can feel it now, a good 120 minutes after the workout completed.

Bane: I tend to agree with the caption that said "flexibility is never ever overrated". She's a mixed bag, for sure, but what the heck!

Talk soon,

Hey Beasts!
Bane: Don't know where you find this stuff but, flexibility can never be over-rated. Haha

Lee: Great work today. I love that you are planning already on how to tackle the next workout. 60's are HUGE for the initial incline, awesome. Can't wait to hear what the Incline Flys will be...

I have been killing time online before my workout and realized I haven't updated pics lately so, I'm gonna give it a go now. Trying to put some before Insanity vs, Presnt up. I hope this works.
The first is Jan6 before starting Insanity the second is at present. i don't see too much but, here's my efforts so far.

Hello Beasts!
Tempo Chest and Tri's Done!
I think I am making the best of this crappy Insanity interruption. I am now, however, questioning getting "Back To The Beast". I am realizing how much I miss the regularly scheduled weight routines. I am reminding myself that I made a commitment to Insanity, now I must return to it and finish what I started.
Taking tomorrow as a rest day, then, hopefully restarting my Insane journey on Tuesday.

Lee: You are kicking butt in the program, if i haven't mentioned it earlier, I applaud you for the adjustments you are making to your diet. You're killing it.

Bane: as usual, the wildcard. loved the picture you recommended earlier, thanks, it was a real pick me up.

So, our new thread has gotten a lot of fly-bys but no one else landing...Haha! Hopefully my comparison photos aren't scaring them away emoticon

I'll post tomorrow just to catch up and check in.

NICE TOWEL owen!

lee keep tugging away man. im confused is the 60 for the full set or for your second rep? and yes insanity beast secoion of hte hybrid is rough.. but i can do it

promised my kid krispy kream and i delivered. havnt had a bostan cream donut in like 2 years. missed it but not realy. guess i did a cheat day cause we ordered pizza for the ride home. she isnt sick anymore and very hypper. she wants to do gymnastics and be part of circa desole. id be very proud if she did something like that. art and story is highly under rated in our sociaty. sure they give far too much money to over paid actors/resses and movie producers but most of those are not art. true art inspires emotion weithr positive or negitive but to inspire base emotions of lust and pride like movies inspire is not true art. wonder awe and inspiration is true art.

rant aside its 9 days of total body toneing. so lighter weights more reps and cardio thrown into weight lifting cause coke isnt the only bad thing in this neighborhood.

today is body beast luck #7. this is one of the hardest work outs iahve done. for a full body pump its hard to get better. throwing in some more songs to my meathead metal play list. and is it just me or can the back up lifters cut thier wifebeaters and make some sexy lady bikinis out of them?

numbas did every thing with 30 dumb bells. not sure if thats bigger or smaller do you guys have a sheet you use? i feel bad useing a piece of paper for one work out when you can stretch taht sheet to include 20ish... ill have to make one when i make a work out for my buddy who will be moving here.

staggered pushups to clean squat... man this one burns me out at the first. hits the biggest muscle groups fast and hard. ... did 6 out of 7....

deadlift/bent over row 7... you had your chance lee no more weakness emoticon

sclull crush/press/crunch on a ball 7

curl/mil press/ez squat i did corkscrew curls 7 at 5 i realized i was using 25s... ego tried to feed me threw the rest of the work out but had to pause for a breather.

delt raise/ reverse lunge they dropped weights i did to down to 15s... damn delts suck emoticon

oblique twist did 20 pound dumb bell single here.

post script edit... went to load the other vid and realized i had to do one more workout before steretches... up right rows and calf raizes did 2-s here burned my shoulders felt nothing in my calves.... but insanity/asylum/tap out takes care of my calves and glutes.

and add in th elower ab oblique killer of ultimat abs from tapout and im done

Today was Bulk Legs, and I pushed myself a bit on this. I LOATHE the first move, the font and back lunges, 12,10,8. I typically do the same weights they do in the video (15 pound dumbbells, then 20, then 25). Not big stuff, but by the end, given all the reps, I’m panting and feeling it. Looked at my charts, see I was marking them all as “OK/Hard” or easier, and decided to go for it (when I mark something as “Hard” or “H!!!!” then I know not to do that!). Wasn’t fun, but I’m alive and happy I did it; a new platform from which to grow.

Owen – saw your pix, realized I hadn’t seen them before, and it’s great to see your awesome progress! I bet you are, but to be sure – Be proud! There’s one particular one from you Feb 10th “pre-insanity” ones, I think, that shows the best progress (front view).
Cool about sticking to your commitment and Insanity! You know better than any of us, but of course, be safe, too! I sense my commitment to finish the Body Beast round, despite using it to “cut”, is somewhat me putting off doing Insanity until later (but it’s also true I just had done so much cardio for so long, blah blah blah).
But also cool to know your commitment to fitness never wavered; you used the downtime to stay busy in a way you could.

Bane: RE that 60 pounder reference – that’s for the peak set (8 reps) of the Incline Press. And it’ll be a stretch for me! But we’ll see, and above all I’ll be safe, watch it, and listen to my body (i.e., if I hear arm tendons and ligaments tearing…).

Today I was thinking about the other Body Beast workouts I STILL haven’t tried, including the Lucky Seven you mention (so I don’t have anything but the Beach Body worksheets, but I WILL be adding to the Excel template that I have, and which I print out to fill in using pencil; it's laid out more like the P90X ones rather than the default Body Beast sheets).

You’ve reminded me about Lucky 7 and I will likely pursue this in the coming weeks toward the end of the Bulk phase (I think, from last time, this phase gets a little boring given it’s 6 straight weeks). But I am intimidated by that workout (and the Tempo ones, for that matter; stamina – yuck!). Just watching it out of the corner of my eye as I did work got me tired.

I’ll be busy tomorrow night, so we’ll see if I post on time (but I should be able to get the workout done regardless). Might be a day late!

Talk soon

Hello Beasts!
First for bane: The kidlet is not only a warrior but has the common sense to stand up for her principle, give her another doughnut from me. Also, the earlier post about art, I couldn't agree more. We have somehow forgot to appreciate all the talent and effort that goes into cteating something special. I am starting to see inside your beastly heart...beware! Of and the towel is from a low cost store, can get 'em anywhere really emoticon

Lee: Great work on the legs, I personally switched from the reverse lunges in that workout to the forward lunges instead. I applaud you for hitting your stride on those rev lunges. They ARE BRUTAL. Also, If you haven't given the Lucky 7 a try yet, you can throw it in instead of your next total body workout as recommended or use it on a precious "rest" day if you are feeling rammy. It really is a fabulous workout that lasts only about 25 minutes. Amazing, I know... Also, thanks for your nice comments about my progress photos. I am still a little unhappy about that fanny sack I call a belly emoticon

Didn't have any workouts scheduled today as I knew it was going to be a loong day. Work at 7 am and just getting home now after 10pm. After school, had a basketball tournament, shaort dinner break and then another basketball practice. I can't wait for tomorrow, only 1 basketball game to attend emoticon I am going to see how the foot feels and if OK, I'm going to green light myself for my INSANITY return!

Ultra quick post just to check in -- I'll owe you both some replies, Bane and Owen!

Bulk Arms today. Wasn't planned to move up on any weights, but I did a little anyway. Got a nice pump from the workout, and overall it felt quite good, almost too quick!

Tomorrow is cardio. Yay! I've now gotten "used" to it, so it's challenging-a-plenty for me.

Oh, and now I have a hankering for a donut!

Hello Beasts! Glad to be back today. By Back, I mean Beast Tempo Back and Bi's. I figure, may as well finish what I started with the Beast substitute workouts so one more day of lifting weights. Overall, good workout, I admit I went a little lighter than I did the last time, many weeks ago but, got a really good burn and pump! I struggled with the pull-up series, my numbers were down, went 9,8,6 (nothing to cheer about there). emoticon Went light on the preacher curls 15,20,25. Heavied it up a bit with the All Angle EZ Bar curls.(50/60/70). Enjoyed today yet again, reminding me that I do oh so much, miss pushin' the iron!

Lee: Glad to hear that you are enjoying the Arm workout but even more encouraged by your enthusiasm for tomorrow's cardio workout. I knew you were a Cardio Beast deep inside, and you've mentioned how much you enjoy Insanity. Speaking of, the last exercise in the Tempo workout today was mountain climbers for 30 seconds, hit 70.........Insanity works!

Bane: I can't believe that the doughnut wasn't really for you to begin with....Haha! I think it's great that your little one prefers natural snacks like apples etc. I have one of each, my older one can't be paid enough to eat his halowween candy and my little one is a sweets fanatic. So, I'm doing something right and something wrong, if I use your metric emoticon Also, I have been thinking about your dyslexia comment from a few messages ago, I think we can work out your story so that it'll get a serious read. message me.

Have some news to share with both of my Beastly friends, I have been diligently petitioning corporate (read, Beachbody) for a workout group of my own. I finally got a group acceptance on only my second try! I'll ask you if you are interested to message me and I'll include the link. I'd post here now but it would look sad for all the trollers to check it out and only see me there, ahhhhh that would be the kiss of death! emoticon

I gotta say, I hope we keep this thread alive, I really enjoy posting here and getting your feedback. It really has been because of the inspiration of you guys that I continued working out with this mild injury instead of using it as an excuse to "rest" a little. So, Thanks!
