I am trying to bring my body fat percentage down (it's currently about 17%) and gain more muscle mass. Which should I do first? Should I gain mass and then try to shed the fat or should I lose the body fat now and then work to bulk up. I've done 1 round of P90x, half a round of insanity, and 2/3rds a round of body beast (clearly my priorities have been unclear). If I am to shed first or build first, which one (or more than one) of the three programs I have do you suggest I use to get my results?

If it helps I'm 18 years old, 185 pounds, a man, and am 6 ft tall.

Thanks in advance emoticon

First shed the body fat. What is your bf goal? 12? 10?. Then bulk up with body beast and upping your calories and carbs. Shed first with Insanity (the whole 60 days) then do body beast.

First of all, you need to pick one program and stick with it until you complete it.

Based on what you described I would recommend P90X because it is a better all around program. It has weight lifting and cardio and recovery components. With P90X you will be working all of your major muscle groups, as well as working on balance, coordination, and cardio conditioning. If you eat clean (basically follow the meal guide exactly) you will get great results. I have done P90X 4 times and also did Insanity and some of the Body Beast workouts but not the whole program. I can tell you that by far P90X is the most balanced workout program that you can get.

And you can definitely build muscle with P90X. I know that I did.

Let me know if you need more help with P90X - will be happy to answer your questions.

Wow Alexander, those are some awesome results!

If you don't mind me asking, how many rounds did it take you to get to that?

At 17 percent body fat I advise that you cut it down to less than 12% before you start eating at the levels needed to bulk up your muscle significantly.

Thank You for the advice, but I do have a few questions about P90X

1. I don't have a lot of money, are the supplements completely necessary?

2. Can you be more specific about what guide I should follow with my diet?

If I did insanity, what type of diet should I follow? If possible I would like to burn fat without losing the muscle i've built.

The supplement that I think makes the biggest difference in how effective you are with the workouts is the recovery formula. Shakeology is amazing as well, and depending on how you use it can save you money since it's designed to be something of a meal replacement depending on your caloric needs. If you can't afford either of them, then get yourself some low fat chocolate milk to use as a recovery drink after your workouts. I believe 8 ounces is the recommended serving size.

As far as diet, I would stick with the more traditional 50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fats. Use the calorie calculator located here Calore Calculator and plug in your info. It's been very accurate for me.

There's also the fat shredder diet, which is 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fat. It didn't really work for me, and my energy levels were low. But you can try that as well if you want, see how it works for you. The diet part requires some experimentation unfortunately before you can really get it nailed down.

If you don't have an app to track your calories I like the Loseit! app. You can create custom foods and it gives you macro breakdowns for what you plug in. You just have to be diligent in plugging in what you eat.

First of all, you are not going to lose any muscle as long as you use them and you will be using almost every muscle in your body doing Insanity. So no reason to worry about it.

Second, your micro nutrients don't matter. As long as they are in a close enough range of what they should be. Make sure your overall calorie intake is adequate to what you are doing.

IF you doing insanity then follow the insanity meal plan. It is really good and easy to use.

But most importantly do not change the programs every week. Pick one and finish it!

As far as supplements go - I would say they help but they are optional. I do recommend you get Shakeology if you do Insanity as it fits really nicely in the meal plan. Shakeology is also really good for you from general health stand point. My entire family including my 6 year old kid is taking it.
