Very tight and sore quads
2/16/13 9:53 AM
I'm just finishing up week 2 of Insanity and everything has been great except that my quads don't seem to recover. During the workouts they get so tight at times that I can barely move my legs and they have stayed sore the entire time. Even during the stretches I have to stop for a second because my legs give out. The rest of my body has adjusted and the soreness has gone away, it seems strange to me that this is the only muscle group not recovering. Any ideas why this would happen or is it just something that will take more time to adjust?

I do spend 10-15 minutes stretching before I start the workout and I'm 6'3" 215lbs so I'm not extremely overweight.

Thanks for any suggestions.

That is interesting for sure. Have you tried using a foam roller? Also make sure you staying hydrated and keeping loose during random parts of the day, especially if you have a job where you are sitting for a majority of the day. Other than that I think it is something that you are going to have to push through and it will eventually go away as your body adjusts. I had the same problem with my knees when I first started Insanity so I know it can be frustrating. Good luck with it

I'm bad about keeping up with the amount of protein but it's a good bit more than before I started Insanity.

I haven't tried foam rollers but it sounds like a good idea. I do try to stay loose throughout the day because I do spend a lot of time sitting. I've also been working on drinking more water throughout the day, I definitely was not drinking enough.

Not quite sure what the deal is here but my guess would probably just be before Insanity you never really utilized your quads that much. As has been said just keep drinking lots of water and stretching throughout the day. If you do those two things most likely your quads will eventually adjust as you keep progressing but if they never do then there's definitely something wrong

I'll start by saying your protein should be at least .75g per lb of lean body mass. For example, I weigh 180, and I estimate I have 165lb lean body mass, so I eat around 150-175g of protein a day. I would ask make sure you protein is from a GOOD source. Protein bars, protein from soy, are usually bad sources. Lean meats, eggs, and fish are great for this! Remember, recovery comes from muscle building blocks. Protein is a part of this. So is fat (believe it or not). Healthy fats from eggs, coconuts, and grassfed meat and wild caught fish are great options that provide the healthiest fats, as well as the best proteins. I hope this helps you, feel free ask away!

What are you doing before and after your workout as far as nutriants go.Do you take any suppliments.I found a pre and post workout drink like Energy & Endurance and Results & Recovery make a big difference. You don't HAVE to use those but something similar will work too.As mentioned by some of the other posts proper proteins are VERY important and you gotta get the right amount of water in you.Aleast 10-12 glasses a day. Make sure to stay hydrated during your workout too. That's very important.Insanity is a very demanding program.I've done it twice followed by Asylum 1&2 and I can say it is extreme on the body.My quads were like rocks for about two and a half weeks, but they did loosen up and feel better.Remember-if you sit a lot for work, your legs aren't use to this kind of(for lack of better word)ABUSE.Stretching is also real important.Make sure you aren't trying to over stretch.Only go as far as your body lets you.Over stretching is just as bad as not doing it.Hope there was a little something here that'll help.

I agree with the nutrition advice especially post workouts. I LOVE my foam roller. It has helped me recover from IT band issues and helped me stay limber for running etc.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm just going to have to keep pushing and see what happens. Maybe if I do a better job of staying loose throughout the day and staying hydrated that will help. Those are two (of the many) areas I could do better in. This is the first time I've done anything active in years so I'm still getting the feel for it. This almost feels like a trial run since I'm slowly trying to improve my diet and get more active. Unfortunately the desk job has gotten me more out of shape than I thought but I'm gonna change that.

First of all lets be clear about one point. You do not "stretch" to begin, you
"warm-up". I hope that was just a typo but there is a world of difference between the two and if in fact you are just "stretching" and not "warming up" that could be your problem.
Next best thing is a foam roller. use this after you "warm up" and even after your program.
If you have trouble spots use it on those spots while your're watching tv.
If you don't want to buy a foam roller use a lacrosse ball, but google or you tube some searches to make sure you use correct technique because that is everything when doing
