What's up Team Beachbody! During my latest video chat, a Team Beachbody member asked me why she hadn't lost weight by her 4th week of INSANITY.

Are you wondering why you're having a hard time losing weight? Press "play" below and find out what questions you need to ask yourself to start seeing that number budge on the scale.

Be sure to check the schedule of upcoming video chats to see when I'll be chatting next, and come prepared with your questions!

From the questions I ask her, what did you find out you need to fix to lose weight?

- Shaun T

Hi Shaun T,

I am not sure that I am ready for "Insanity", but I just watched your latest video chat about not loosing any weight after 4weeks. I can relate to that question, so I watched your video to find the answer...I do eat healthy 5 meals a day and work out for 50 minutes everyday (I think I need more workouts in the day though). I really just wanted to say...You are funny! The more I am on Team Beachbody and chat and watch videos of Trainers the more "human" each one becomes...that's nice to see.

I'm on my second week of insanity and of course I gained weight. Matter of fact I have been working out in general for 2 months (2 hours Tuesday/Thursday Regiment, before Insanity). All the weight I lost, I regained in 2 1/2 month. I do have a thyroid condition, so I had to have my levels retested. Most likely they will increase my meds. I'm trying so hard not to just give up. This weight lost struggle has been going on for over 2 years. in that time I lost almost 22 lbs...then to gain it all back in thise 2 1/2 month time. I'm a lil (no very frustrated). But I'm hanging in there.

Hang in there Precious4ever! One thing that put a lot of perspective to me, outside of Shaun T's video, was Chalene Johnsons' light on the subject: Hope this helps keep you going! Thyroid is not a fun thing to deal with either, so good luck with the retesting! Have you tried Shakeology as well?

Probably the most common question I get when I release a new exercise program is, “Help! I’m gaining weight! Am I doing something wrong?” This is a common phenomenon with any new exercise program, Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Hustle, you name it! It’s especially common (and temporary) with intense strength training programs like ChaLEAN Extreme or Tony Horton’s P90X.

The motivation to start a new exercise program is almost always to lose weight. However, what most personal trainers know and most at-home exercisers do not, is that a new exercise program often can cause an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale. (Notice I didn’t say weight gain! I’ll explain.) This common increase in the scale is also the reason why perhaps millions of people start and then quickly quit their resolution to get fit.

The temporary weight gain explained:

When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and “unfamiliar” the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to

“protect and defend” the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.

This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen with fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of water retention and slight swelling.

Most people are motivated enough to put up with this temporary muscle soreness. Yet, many, especially those who really need immediate weight loss to keep them motivated in those first couple of weeks become discouraged and quit!

When I worked with a group of 70 test participants during the development stages of ChaLEAN Extreme, this happened. Who was the most upset and discouraged? You guessed it… the women! I’m happy to report absolutely for every single woman (and man) in our group, the weight increase was temporary and never lasted more than 2 weeks before they started to see a major drop in the scale. However, these people had the advantage of working with someone who was able to explain to them why this was happening and assure them the weight would come off if they stuck to the nutrition plan and stayed true to the program.

For those of you who are following the ChaLEAN Extreme phase plan, keep in mind that when you start each phase, your body will be “in shock” again. Don’t be surprised or discouraged if you experience a temporary gain on the scale the first week of each phase.

My own personal example of this is running 10K’s. I don’t do it very often, maybe 1 or 2x a year. Even though I run on a regular basis, when you run a race you push much harder. It’s natural for me to be “insanely” sore the next day. It’s also very common for me to see the scale jump 4 pounds the next day from forcing fluids post race and the resulting DOMS. Even though I know the cause of it, it’s still a bummer. We’re all human and hard work should mean “results”. Hard work equals results, but our bodies are amazing machines and they know how to protect us from hurting ourselves. Soreness forces you to give those muscles a break Ultimately you will lose the weight and you will change your metabolism in the process.

The key is understanding that this is a normal and temporary and stick with the program!!

When to be concerned:

If you experience a significant weight gain (exceeding 5 pounds) which does not begin to decrease rapidly after the second week, guess what it is??? I’ll give you one hint… you put it in your mouth and chew it. You know it! You’re food (or calorie laden beverages). Newsflash friends.. exercise doesn’t make you gain weight. Consuming more food than you burn makes you gain weight!

So if after two weeks you are not losing weight, have gained weight that’s not coming off, it’s time to take a close and honest look at your food intake. It’s time to find out what you’re burning in calories each day. Have your RMR or BMR tested. This can be done for less than $50 and the information is invaluable. It takes out the guess work. Google “hydrostatic body fat testing _______ ” and insert the name of the big city you’re closest too. Companies that do HBFT also do BMR testing. Knowledge is king.

I’m gaining weight, but I’m sure it’s muscle:

Possibly, but if you’re following ChaLEAN Extreme correctly, you should be losing fat and gaining muscle and the fat loss should be much more substantial than the rate at which you can physically put on muscle. This is even true for the guys.

Of the 70 plus people in my test group, every single one of them lost body fat and gained muscle and not one of them gained weight. I believe the average weight loss after 4 months was 28 pounds with many people losing 40 plus pounds. Even the men, who as you can see put on a lot of muscle, were seeing huge drops in the scale. We tested their muscle composition at the beginning and at the end and 100% of the participants maintained or gained muscle while achieving substantial weight loss. That’s the key to keeping weight off long term, i.e. muscle. Muscle burns fat. But you’ve heard me say that before.

Moral of the story:

Be patient young grass hopper. You’ll be lean and mean in no time!

You NEED fats... I just did this same thing. I spent a month of a low low fat diet trying to lose weight. I didnt lose a single pound. Changed back to my normal healthy eating habits and pooof 3 pounds gone in a week! Keep it simple dont do anything drastic like going 0% fats and see what happens.

You need all 3. By cutting out one, your body knows something is up. Don't go eating donuts for fat, but healthy fats such as avacado, almonds and even olive oil are good for you. A good start is a 40/30/30 ratio, protein/fat/carb then adjust as needed. I personally find i need 50/30/20 to lose weight and gain muscle but everyone is different. Clean eating is what you need to do to lose your middle. Abs are made in the kitchen my friend!

Hey Stephanie - So glad you're hanging in there and trying to do your best. A lot of folks tell me they don't think they're ready for Insanity, and sometimes they're right, but most of the time, if they've been doing some exercise or another program, then they usually are ready, just scared maybe - it looks INSANE!! and it is, but there are ways to modify and make it work and you still get great results!
In my opinion - if you're doing the right kind of workout, you don't need more than 50 minutes a day. The power of healthy foods and the right intensity on exercise and the right variation of exercise all work to get your results!
I sent you a friend request - hit me up for some help! I can also connect you to some folks (especially the ladies) in my Challenge groups who are doing insanity for the first time too! It's definitely fun and worth the effort!

I just finished week 1/Month 2 of Insanity. I gained 3 pounds in Month 1 and dropped 4 pounds in recovery week. I was worried at first! I thought I would be the only person ever to gain while doing Insanity. So hang in there & don't give up. I'm expecting a bigger drop since my clothes are getting baggy.

Oh. My. Gosh. This is my FAVORITE, favorite, favorite question as a health and fitness professional, because it challenges me to dig through what is going on with a person to really find out the source of the weight gain, or where they are missing something. There is always a missing link of some sort. It could be something your body is not getting enough of, or too much of, or bad timing on meals...any of the things he listed or asked questions about could be your "missing link" factor.

So here's the scoop. When I did INSANITY, in the first month I gained 6 lbs. I was really not happy about it, but I decided to just keep pushing, because I knew that somewhere in there was the missing link. For me, it was NOT ENOUGH PROTEIN. My #1 favorite thing to give clients is the myfitnesspal app. This application can do SO much for people like me, whose ratios were completely off. When people think of protein, they tend to think of bulking up, because protein shakes are for bodybuilders, right? Well...sort of. I mean, yes, protein builds muscles, but here's the cool part: MUSCLE BURNS FAT! Love love LOVE that. Anyway, long story short, I programmed in my ratios, and let the computer show me what I needed based on those ratios, and as soon as they were under control, BOOM! With the last 5 weeks of the program, I lost 23 lbs, and it was like sucking the fat off me with a vacuum (lol)! I have a meal system now, where basically a whole day worth of food is prepped and ready to go at least the day before, so that I can just "grab and go" so to speak. I eat 5-6 times a day, and I keep track of it all on my app. That way I know at noon if I'm under, to eat more before that "oh crap I didn't eat today, I need to eat 1600 calories....blah blah blah" binge that we all get into at times. Having a busy lifestyle makes this difficult, but not impossible.

To all of those who are reading this and are struggling with weight loss, regardless of where you are in your fitness journey or what program you are using, I say this:

DO. NOT. GIVE. UP.

Because if I had given up when the scale was irritating me, I would have never gotten the body I have now, or the metabolism that I've developed!

Also, I am willing to help anyone who happens to read this and needs help. Just message me and I will do what I can. You have a missing link, and I will try to help find it! It's different for everyone!

Congratulations on the beginning of your journey, and keep your head high! You make progress each day you PUSH PLAY! emoticon

Peace Out.

Thank you... I am was wondering the same thing. I am stronger and my fit test improves every time. I am in week 3 of insanity. What yall say made sense. I do eat clean, but I am only eating 2 times a day. This will change. I do know that I need to eat smaller meals all day.

Thank you
Keep moving and have fun doing it. emoticon

This is a great video and the explanations are right on, as many of the additional inputs that people have replied with.

(by the way, new coach here...could you help a fella coach out by liking my new Facebook Page.)

I am on my second round of P90X, just started week 4 to be exact. The first time, the scale did not go down the first 2 weeks, it went up, and I was sore as hell too. I had been sedentary for about two years prior to P90X, after a lifetime of fitness. My body obviously wasn't used to exercise any more. My diet was clean, but still a lot of meals 2-3 times a day.

Around the third week, the soreness starting going away, and it was pretty much gone by week four, which was a recovery week. The ironic thing is, that it was the recovery week (less intense week) that the scale started to drop. Again, my body was not feeling sore, thus not protecting it self and holding water.

Finally starting to see results, I started paying more attention to all the program specifics. I started with shakeology, and keep eating the same type of food, just spread out through out the day in 5 or 6 meals, instead of 2 to 3. By week six, the pounds started coming off, and continued through the end of the program

On to round two.

From the get go, I have been slowly losing weight. Now, keep in mind, I am not focusing of losing weight this round. I am focusing on increasing my strength and performance. There is very little muscle soreness, my diet is clean, concise and consistent. The results are steady. More definition is showing, week by week, and strength continues to improve. Though the scale continues a slow, but steady downward trend, I actually look bigger...in a good way. My buddy calls it the body building deception, the weight goes down with body fat, more of your muscles show, which actually make you look bigger, ripped and muscular.

Now, if I can just increase the amount of sleep I get each night, all would be perfect!

Oh, and I will be following my second round of P90X with INSANITY: Asylum!!!!!
