Heart Rate Question
Heart Rate Question
6/18/09 12:41 PM
Hey all!

Today while doing Plyometrics, as usual my heartrate skyrocketed. It was strong at 150 bpm and then quickly upped to 173. I don't like my heart rate being this high and so I backed off the work. The rate dropped to about 150-152 and stayed there for about 7 minutes without me doing anything. I didn't cool down...just stopped. (I know...big mistake) and so I'm thinking my heart was having to do all the work for my legs too. Is this right? Should I have kept going and not stopped the exercise? My husband and I are doing P90X together. I am 33 and healthy as far as I know...we were JUST talking the other day about tachycardia (fast heart rate) and he said he talked to a doctor once that said it's not an issue unless your heart rate doesn't drop right away. So...when this happened today I kind of panicked. I felt fluttery in my chest but not dizzy and had no pain (other than sore muscles from chest and back yesterday!! ;) Should I call my doctor?

Thanks!

If you were using a heart rate monitor, is there any chance that the transmitter belt lost contact with your skin and it was giving you a false reading?

If not and you felt fluttery (since I have had tachycardias for many years) but not dizzy, yes, I would definitely call your doctor as a precaution.

If it was just the monitor, I wouldn't worry about it. But since you felt something, I would definitely contact your doctor.

As far as "just stop", there is nothing wrong with stopping if you feel discomfort or distress. However, you should give your body some cool down time whenever possible. At a minimum this would mean, stay on your feet and pace around the room for awhile.

Good Luck!

Okay...made an appointment for next week. Now I'm super bummed. I wonder if I should keep going in the program or stop? Next week will be a recovery week for me. I'm trying not to freak out.... emoticon

I get them when I run and race. I've had my heart rate stay in the 170's for 10:00 at rest and then gone back to racing. I'm over the scary part.

In your case, though, I would ask your doctor whether you can continue to exercise based on your episode and chances are he will say yes. Before you get bummed, ask how you should proceed. In any case, you should be able to do some form of exercise.

My $0.02
Plyometrics sure does get your heart going! This is my first week in P90X. I saw my heart rate hit the 95%-99% range a number of times, but it dropped to the aerobic range quickly when I backed off to more relaxed movements.

Is it possible that anxiety over your heart rate helped keep it high? What happened when you did the fitness check? Did your HR drop off quickly, or did it do the same thing?

Regardless, better safe than sorry - see a doc.

Well, since you are 33, your max HR is about 187 so you were at 92% of HRmax. That alone, IMO, is not an issue but the "fluttery feeling" may indeed be reason to get it checked. Also, 150 is only 80% of your HRmax and so shouldn't be cause for concern, assuming there are no congenital issues.

One question is did you "panic" when your HR was that hight and didn't drop as expected, as such an emotion could have an effect too.
Also, did you try pacing the floor and taking deep slow breaths to bring your HR back down.

In the early days of P90X Classic my HR was occasionally up to 155 (my HRmax is 157) so I pressed pause and paced the floor breathing very deeply till it dropped into the low 140s and proceeded. I didn't experience any symptoms other than very heavy breathing so felt it was OK. When doing cardio I shoot for 90% HRmax, while circuit training my goal is around 80% HRmax.
