Frustrated with Kenpo X
4/20/13 11:41 AM
Hey guys,

So I'm on week one of P90X, and I did Kenpo X for the first time today. I found it incredibly frustrating! I really had no idea what was going on. I know it's probably .00001 level of martial arts, but I went into it having no idea what a "jab" or "uppercut" is. The kicks weren't too bad for me (I think because of a gymnastics background), but I had a hard time pairing kicks with the arm movements (and even the arm movements by themselves). My question to you all, is: Are there any online resources where I could see Kenpo X in slow-mo? I don't have that option with DVD/VCR (we're a bit old school) and I feel that this would be a good way for me to do my best with Kenpo X.

Thank you so much!

I know exactly how you feel... I felt like I had 2 left feet and 3 right arms the first time of Kenpo. It was much better the 2nd week and I will be finishing up week 3 Kenpo tomorrow. Stay with it and you'll get use to the moves.

Like Tony says, "Do your best and forget the rest!"

I'm not aware of anywhere you watch it in slow mo, but what I would suggest is pop the DVD in and watch each move separately and practice the moves one at a time. It can be a bit overwhelming at first to just jump into the workout but with practice you'll get a lot better.

Several Beachbody programs have moves that take a few tries to get the hang of it... Just keep moving and after pushing play a few more times you'll have it down... Larry Shelton - EndurafFIT

Thanks everyone for the input. Yeah, I'll probably watch the moves a few times to get the hang of it. I think I was just frustrated because I finished the workout without breaking much of a sweat. It sort of felt like a waste :/

Just got to take it day by day...

I had the same problem! I've always thought that I had good coordination but this workout changed my mind! Seemed I had two left hands at times... so I slowed down and almost found my groove. I guess when I do it in a few days for the second time, I will take more time watching and then pause when I feel comfortable.

what I tell people is to do what they are doing on screen, but don't focus on the reps. If I get tangled up I wait a rep and get back into it.

Just focus on form and later one once you got the moves down you can start to bring it.

I'm a fairly clumsy guy and am able to do Kenpo X quite well now. The reason is not because I suddenly became coordinated, its because I did Power 90 first. Power 90 teaches the kicks and punches and kicks slowly. Then it introduces the combos slowly. My other suggestion would be to try Cardio X. There is some Kenpo in there too, just not as much.
Keep at it, you'll get it!

Hi Rachel,
Dont feel frustrated. when we try a new workout the first time is not going to come out right but as you keep doing them you will be able to do them.I recomand the day you dont have to do that workout and if you have time sit down and whatch it like that you have the moves in your mind and it will get much easier.

Thanks everyone for the support / suggestions! Sounds like some of you have had to make a few adjustments with Kenpo X, as well.

I had Kenpo X yesterday for the second time, and to be honest, well... it wasn't much better. It was still very frustrating to follow the moves and I left my "workout" feeling very unproductive. It's just confusing to me. When they do the moves, I'm usually watching to see how the feet pivot, if it's "same arm, same leg," or "opposite arm, opposite leg," and I just get frustrated so easily. I definitely need to stop overanalyzing!

But at the same time... is it possible to replace Kenpo X with Cardio X?

Thank you so much!

Getting your form down is paramount to being able to match the speed/match Tony & the people in the video, so just try to make sure you're moving, but go at a pace where you can work on making sure you are getting the movements down correctly, it will come with time. emoticon Everyone has their difficult workouts, whether it be coordination issues, strong upper body with a lower body that needs strengthening, and vice versa. Don't beat yourself up, just make sure you keep trying. You will get it if you keep trying. It's a matter of repetition. Try to stay focused as well, I find that sometimes if I get frustrated, my mind floats, and I find myself selling myself short of what I'm able to do. Hope I could help some!

Cardio X is a shorter mix of Yoga, Kenpo and Plyo. I'd say you could replace it for a bit until you get the punching and kicking moves down and then go back.
Just press play and go get it! You'll get there if you do that, don't give up.

I say stick with the KenopX dvd, dont replace it with anything else, the more you do it the more you will figure it out and the better you will get at it. I loved KenpoX. It was my fav P90X dvd.

I'm on day 84 and I still get totally confused doing the star blocks and by the time I work out what to do its over anyway. But I love Kenpo X in spite of that. At first it was 2nd place on my list of least favorite workouts, Yoga made top of the list. For myself, Substituting Cardio X a few times helped me to like them both a great deal more. It wasn't so overwhelming. Kenpo is now my favorite and yoga, well it moved up two spots to my 3rd least favorite.

My biggest tip is that whenever possible, focus on the marine doing the workout. He has near-perfect form on every move. Tony is hit or miss with whether watching him is helpful. The girl seems to have decent form but seems to be going through the motions. The guy in the back who supposedly helped create this DVD seems to half-@ss it the entire DVD with some of the laziest looking punches and kicks I've seen (until the cool down, where he seems to bring the intensity! lol)

I agree. Wesley Idol is a total slacker in this video, and the smirk on his face half the time doesn't help. His horse stances are an embarrassment, and anyone who has taken Karate will know his form during blocks is pathetic. No folding of the blocks whatsoever. Lazy.

Back to the OP, when you are doing front hand punches, and back hand for that matter, think of squashing a bug with your foot. Sounds gross, but when I first started taking Karate in 1987, now a 4th degree Black Belt, that was how my instructor said to visualize the pivot. That will help you to "hit with your hip and your body".

It is a confusing workout if you have no Martial Arts or boxing experience. Believe it or not, as you do it more, you will pick up how to do the techniques. If you have time, watch the video without trying to workout so you can try to learn the moves.

Good luck!

!
he truly is a slacker and horrible for this video

After awhile to get it though...I even picked up weighted gloves to use.....man it intensifies the workout. I love using the gloves and have incorporated them in other workouts.......
