resistance bands or dumbbells?
I have about 2 weeks left of Insanity and am trying to get everything ready to start P90x.

Some people mentioned they use dumbbells instead of the resistance bands and I just wanted to find out if they are going to be worth the $300 investment.

Does it make any difference at all? For example will dumbbells bring faster results or better workouts than resistance bands or any other benefits to using dumbbells instead? Are there other Beachbody programs that will require dumbbells?

Thanks

Mike

Mike - It really comes down to personal preference. I know lots of people who went through P90X with bands and loved their results. Others like the dumbbells.

For me - I started with the bands and they broke/snapped during the shoulders and arms workout. As a result I could not finish the workout. I got angry and went out and got a set of dumbbells from Wal-Mart. I used those for the first 60 days then they became too light. It was a pain to continuously push pause to change the weights.

I eventually invested in a set of the Bowflex Selecttech 552's dumbbells. That was a great investment because it was so much easier to change the weights around between exercises. I have friends who went with the Powerblocks. Bowflex? Powerblocks? That too comes down to personal preference.

P90X2 also uses dumbbells. Body Beast uses dumbbells, Insanity: The Asylum DVDs use dumbbells and or resistance bands. The videos are set up for both dumbbells and bands.

I hope this helps.

John

I prefer the dumbbells myself. I find them easier to use, no tangled messes ( it end to throw my bands on top of each other emoticon) and not wasting my time trying to get the right resistance, course if you take notes you will know exactly which ones you need for each move. Its all personal preference!

Thanks so much for your replies. It looks like dumbbells will be a good investment then.

The Power blocks and Bowflex reviews have a lot of differing opinions out there. Is one better than the other as far handling and reliability?

Same as John, I used and still use bands, but have started with free weights to get more routines to use. I also just purchased a set of BowFlex SelectTech weights. They go 8 to 52.5 pounds each. NICE! emoticon

I got the bowflex ones and I like then. With some workouts they feel awkward because they are really wide but I hear the same and more complaint with the power blocks.

Hi Mike,

It's really based on preference. I find that I get better results with dumbbells, however they can get expensive. I actually use resistance bands with my dumbbells to increase weight resistance and to compensate for not having heavy enough dumbbells for some exercises. You can check craigslist for used dumbbells at very good prices. There are also modification you can do that require less weight. For example, balancing on 1 leg while doing a bicep curl. This is much harder and will strengthen your core and balance at same time.
