Does Shakeology Expire?
Does Shakeology Expire?

Legitimate question: Does a sealed, unopened bag of Shakeology ever truly expire? I understand that the effectiveness of the nutrients may decrease, but does it truly go bad to the point that you shouldn't use it and the bag should be tossed?

I ask because I recently came across a sealed, unopened bag of Shakeology in one of my cabinets. I used to be heavily into P90X and had been on auto-ship with Shakeology when it was first introduced, though I eventually ended up with more bags than I could use and cancelled my auto-ship. I thought I had long-since used up all of those bags, but found this one yesterday afternoon as I was searching through a cabinet. It has been stored in a cool, dry place the entire time and as I mentioned, is unopened. However, the expiration date on the package is 4/2011, meaning we're now a full 2 years past it.

Normally I would just toss something THAT old without thinking twice, but I have used protein powders and things like that that were well beyond their expiration date before without any ill effects. Considering the cost of these bags, I figured I might as well at least ask before I threw it out. Can the product still be used safely? Thoughts?

Why isn't there an expiration date on it? I was just wondering if I continued my auto ship through pregnancy if it would still be good after I was either done breastfeeding or once my child is night weaned so approx 2 years later.

It's hard to say - the shakeology is good for a year (based on it's printed expiration date- its along the side for my bag).

It's probably good close to a year post expiration if it has never been opened. (based on the way companies determine expiration dates- they just have to prove that the product is still good up to the printed expiration date, but usually it is good passed that date, but since it's the date they filled out on the form, it is more cost effective to stay with that date as the official expiration date)

With it being 2 years passed expiration, that means it's been packaged for 3 years. The only thing that concerns me are the proteins in shakeology (milk protein, etc). This would be what would "break down" after awhile. Meaning there would be no " real protein" in it anymore. Same for the vitamins...

If you are gung ho on keeping it - open it, examine it, and try it. It doesn't have any artificial dyes/ preservatives in it, so if it looks and smells ok, it probably is.

It would be the equivalent of taking an expired vitamin at this point - won't really hurt you but it might not help you either.

I asked this same question to the creator, Darin Olien. He suggested that you try a half scoop and see if you have an issues, mainly stomach discomfort, cramping, etc. If you feel fine, it is probably safe to still drink! I would not throw it out!!

According to the FAQ's

What is the shelf life of Shakeology?

The shelf life of Shakeology is now 1 year from the time of manufacture. To ensure you always get Shakeology in its most potent state, and at the peak of freshness we decided to shorten the shelf life (the "best before" date on packaging) from 2 years to 1 year.

If unopened, Shakeology should ideally be consumed within one (1) year; however, if opened, ideally within one (1) month.
