Don't be alarmed...calories in the 300s for a petite woman sounds about right. I'm 5'4" and low 140s. With my HRM I see I burn about 355-370 per 40 minute workout. I go to about 85-90% of my max heart rate during exercises and back down to about 75-80% during break. I take a few breaks but keep up most of the time. For bigger men on here to say that as women, we should be burning 1000 per workout? It doesn't work that way. It depends on your height, weight, age, workout intensity and how fit you are already. So, if you have a good HRM, take that reading. I think if you cut one activity out for a week and see if there's a difference in the amount of effort (or fatique) you put into a workout, you'll have your answer whether fatigue is a factor or not.

I am a 144 pound female (and I'm short) and my calorie burn depends on which dvd I'm doing. I burn the most on the Plyometric Circuit (I'm in month 1, 3rd week). According to my HRM I'm burning 600-700 calories with that one. Pure cardio I average 350-500 depending on how hard I go. Cardio Resistance I burn about 550. Hope this helps.

This site breaks down all the Insanity workouts in the program, mostly the 750-2000 range is about right. This breakout is what I will program into my FitBit Dashboard.

I am a 44 year old female - pretty healthy - 5'2" and #131. The most I burn is around 400 and that's REALLY pushing it. I don't stop and I don't push pause. I keep moving from beginning to end. I keep reading women say they are only burning 300-400 and that seems to be my experience too.

I calculate calories using a Polar FT4 HRM

TieraChanel:
I go as hard as I can everywork out and I want to long in how many calories I burn each time. So, approximately how many calories do we burn?

The numbers will very from person to person, obviously. Weight, body fat and intensity are all factors, even age to an extent. The key is to go has hard as you can for as much of the workout as possible and here's a clue on how to do that - when you think you're done and need a break, stay in for just a few more seconds/reps (depending on the move). When you do that, you're truly giving it your all.
The reason I bring that 'extra few seconds' up is because when I first did Insanity, I thought I was pushing myself, only to discover later, during Asylum, that I was stopping short of that. Why? "The work doesn't start until you get tired" as Shaun T says in Asylum and that's a motto that has stuck with me ever since.
So, when you think you're tired and think you need a break, you're not and you don't - at least not yet. Keep going for a few more seconds or reps and when you do that, you'll start to realize that you have more in the tank than your body is telling you. Sure, there is a limit for your body, but don't let your body choose where that is - let your mind choose it! That's how you dig deep - by pushing your limits and not giving in the moment your body signals to you it's tired. (This is aimed at anyone who does Insanity, not you specifically.)

So, with that said, lets go to the calories. I'm 6ft, 190 and 29yrs old. I don't use a HRM, but take my heart rate during the scheduled breaks (pulse for 10 seconds x6 = HR) and use a calculator that factors in age, weight, avg HR, duration of exercise. I take my pulse 4 times during the workout, then average it out at the end to get my average HR. While I MAX out up around 180, my average HR is usually between 162 & 168, which leads to about 670 to 705 calories burned in 40 minutes (or month 1 workouts). If you estimate through equivalency, for month 2, 50-55 minute workouts, 830-970 calories burned.

Another note: for every 5 lbs over/under my 190 (at the same HR), add/subtract about 10 calories from your total burned. Factor in another +/- 5 calories for each BPM over/under my 162. It's a lot of math (which I don't mind), but it would be much simpler to get an app or a monitor.
So, in closing, while these numbers will be different than yours, I'd say they're a good indication of what's going on and obviously there are variable, but I'd say this is most likely within the margin of error of +/- 50.

The APP I use for this is called "calories burned calculator." I got it from the 'google(play) store' and it's free. It'll give you an approximation of where you're at in your calorie burning. Apologies for the length of this. I tend to say a lot without meaning to emoticon

I am 5'1, weigh 119 pounds and I am into my second month, second week of insanity.

I am only burning about 350-400 calories a work-out. Sometimes as low as 300 calories for a 45 minute session.

I am really wondering why this is low when other seem to be getting quite higher results in their calories burned and I think it might have to do with a couple of reasons....let me know what you think?

1. My size (being a smaller framed women, you burn less)

2. Do Insanity and Taekwondo twice a week I exercise every day! My body could be fatigued
and I am finding even though I am really exhausted during exercise I am really not
putting in the best I could because of fatigue.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Cheers
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I am only 4'11", 120 pounds and I rarely burn more than 400-ish for a Month 1 workout. Yes, size is a BIG factor in this, you are correct. The smaller you are, the less you're going to burn, even with high intensity.
As for all the exercise you do, it is possible that you are fatigued and can't give 100% effort. Be sure to stretch often to relieve soreness and eat enough calories and carbs to support your routine.

Hope that helps!

I am 44 and weigh 160 and I am usually burning 450-500 calories doing Insanity Max. I thought there was something wrong with my HRM, as hard as I work out, I feel it should be more calories burned.
I have another question for anyone, I wear a HRM...I am on my 2nd week of the 2nd month of insanity. It seems like it take forever for my heart rate to get up to where I burn max calories. I am out of breath doing insanity, and have to stop to get a breather, but my HRM still says my heart rate is like 160-165. Is this because my heart is getting stonger. My goal is burning 700 calories/day, so I do insanity and the treadmill for 1/2 hour. I already work out 1 1/2 daily.

While the exact amount of calories burned during Insanity workouts has not been researched, you can use the researched MET value (metabolic equivalent) for "vigorous video workouts" to determine how many calories you’ve burned based on your weight. See our chart here: Calculate Calories Burned During Insanity

To work out how many calories you are burning you have to factor in several things - your weight, the workout you are using - how long you do it for and, the hardest thing to get right, is how hard you are working. You can get close to theat last by using the following ideas:
Low: Can you sing while doing your workout?
Mid: Can you talk while doing your workout?
High: Are you out of breath and could not talk while doing your workout?

If you put all these things into a calculator like http://insanitycalories.com/ it shoudl give you a pretty accurate figure for how many calories you are burning. Hope this helps.

I agreed with Tantczak on my worst day doing insanity I burn 240 calories, to lose a pound a week you need a 3500 deficit so below is my break down. Please this still a work in process for me, so if anyone can add with great advice. I feel it will help us all in this process of health and fitness.

Daily Caloric Expenditure just getting up and thought the day
1600 (female 62in and 155 lbs)
Add insanity 240
=1840
Caloric intake on my best day 1235, never really anymore than 1350
So 1840-1235= 605x7=4235 a week(I started insanity on 5/21 down 6 lbs
I recalculate every month.)

Again this just me on my journey to insanity!

Hey can you give me some tips as to how to lose that much per week. I'm 23 and I'm 155lbs I'm 5'9, and I just started insanity. I workout hardcore like everyday and I was not losing any weight. I would like to drop 10lbs and tone if possible.

Thanks emoticon
