FitX ---- NUTRITION
9/26/09 4:24 AM
For everyone who loves P90X and everything else that has to do with Beachbody, Insanity, Fitness & Nutrition and being in the best shape of your life. I started P90X on May 11, 2009, but before that I worked out at the gym and also competed in Triathlons & Ironmans. My wife Kristen is a personal trainer, aerobics instructor, yoga instructor and is a true testament to how great the P90X program is...she has lived the P90X style of workouts for over 15 years by teaching and practicing Yoga, Weight Training, Cardio, Kickboxing, Body Pump, Plyometrics, Spin etc. She is my inspiration, and the reason behind me commiting to P90X....BECAUSE IT WORKS!

Come join us and share the journey to a life of health, nutrition and happiness. Please post and share your pictures (250 pixels works great: got to www.picresize.com) and progress with us, we love to hear the stories. Also, if you want/have any great recipes we would love to hear about them emoticon.

DJ: I'd like to join you on this thread. I'm looking for a place to post my thoughts and
share my experiences as well as I move into my second round of X and beyond. I've also found your tips, advice and encouragement on other threads to be valuable to me personally.

Like you, I started P90X on May 11. Unlike you, this is my first serious foray into the world of fitness since the late 1980's...ouch!

I'm like a lot of people, endlessly starting and then stopping one diet program after another or worse, popping pills. Hopelessly following whatever seemed to be trendy at the time. Exercise never seemed to be a serious part of the equation. Of course, It never worked. It was never a permanent change.

That all changed about 6 months ago when I saw the infamous P90X infomercial. Something about it lit a fire under me that I had never felt before. I realized right away that P90X might be a little too challenging for me. I was just under 300 lbs, had serious high blood pressure problems and was pre-diabetic.

I was thrilled when I saw Power 90 as an alternative and I jumped right in. Wow!! what a struggle it was at first just to warm up...LOL!
But I kept Pushin Play for 4 months. I had lost 55 lbs. when I started P90X. Since May 11, I'm down another 25 lbs. for a total of 80 lbs.

I haven't been 207 lbs since I was in 9th grade...Unbelievable!!
P90X works!!

One of the greatest Loves of my life is Skiing and I've been doing it for almost 30 years. I can't wait to take my new found fitness into the mountains and see what I can do now. I was always the fattest man (or woman) on the mountain!! NO MORE!!

I say Bring It on cause I feel like nothing can stop me now!

Thanks for letting me ramble.

Ron

Timberline, glad you decided to join me in the thread. Your commitment and gains are a true testament...we all fall off the wagon at some point in our life, but it sure feels good when you back on the right track emoticon. My wife and I are both fitness freaks, so it's going to be a fun ride. I love sharing informtion as much as I do learning from others. I have some great stuff to share that I'm sure you will enjoy...ie: My power pancake recipe that my wife and I perfected about 10 years ago and now I eat every morning...unless I'm running late emoticon.

After P90X on August 9th, I'm going to start INSTANITY on August 17th emoticon, what about you? I can't wait to see and share in your progress....keep up the good work!

DJ: I found you. I will stay on the May team as long as it is viable. However. I will be visiting you here. You are a good source for all things X. I'll finish round 1 on May 9. Have not decided if I am going to move to classic, do another round of lean or not. My son is trying to get me to do the Spartan 300 with him which is an awsome program, but I don't have time to get to the gym regularly. This works and I'll stay in touch.

Timberline: Don't go ghost on us You are doing great and have made significant progress.

Glad you found the thread. Did you mean you finish on August 9th? Can I give you my opinion? So far you are doing great, so why not do a full round of Classic and instead of doing the Lean or the Doubles, just do the Classic and cut your calories where you follow the 2400 portion control all 90 days....I'll help you out with making the food simple, good, and fun. I guarantee you will take it to a whole new level. The food I eat is so simple and you will shed the pounds like crazy. There are no shortcuts, but there are better choices. There are some over the counter supplements that I have found to really work well and I have gotten good results with them: L-Glutamine, Creatine, and a good multi vitamin. After each workout I have a recovery drink and I add my L-Glutamine and Creatine to it, plus half a banana and the combination really makes the recovery better.

What do you weigh today and what is your goal weight?

Power Pancakes...hmmm...sounds intriguing. I'm always game for something different.

After this round of P90X I'll be doing a second round of classic. I'm thinking of getting the X plus series and incorporating them during the last month or two. Then it'll be onto Insanity for me. I'm looking to drop down to between 185 and 190 lbs. and I think I'll get that done in round 2. I should be below 20% body fat by day 90 of this round. If so, I'm confident that a six pack will be mine by the end of round two!

Hey DJ: Yes August 9 will be day 90, today is a rest day. I weigh 215 which is a two pound loss from day 60. I prefer to stay between 215 - 220 but lose the belly fat. I agree on supplements. I use muscle builder meal replacement, myoplex, and a variety of supplements including c, b-complex, b-12, e, d-3, COQ10, liquid minerals, acidophiphilis, grape seed extract and 81mg aspirin for high blood pressure as well as creatine and glutimine. I admit that I don't get them all every day but am growing in consistency. When I do get them all along with transcendetal meditation I feel great. It helps when you have a crap job that you can't leave because of the economy. Thats where p90x helps me. Its the most beneficial part of my day besides prayer and meditation. After all that its the crap job which does pay the bills. I don't have the time others do to work and enjoy life, it WILL come.

Dj: You and others can help fill in some other meal ideas. I will post what I eat the next few days and you can help with adjustments. My primary meal is what I call the Shannon Sharpe special. After all He has three Super Bowl Rings at 245 and 10% body fat. He ate chicken breasts, rice and greens or corn every day during the season and he's going to the Hall Of Fame. Sounds like a workable program for me at least on the days when I'm Not working and driving 13 hours a day emoticon

How tall are you? Do you weigh your portions of meat on a food scale? If you don't have time to eat at work, I can give you some great suggestions for the snack between breakfast/lunch & lunch/dinner. Keep plugging away and you will reach your goals!

Ok, here is my POWER PROTEIN PANCAKE recipe...try them, it is a great balance of everything, including blueberries which are a great form of antioxidant. This a well balanced slow released meal that provides lots of energy!

Tools:

I like to use a hand blender and a tall 32+ oz. cup that is wide enough at the bottom to let the blender get there...the hand blender is so much easier to clean up vs. a regular blender.

Ingredients:

8 oz. Egg Whites (I buy them in a carton)
4 oz. 2% Cottage Cheese (I buy the Breakstone Snack Packs, already portioned out)
2/3 cup Old Fashioned Oatmeal (Rolled Oats, not the instant Quick Oates)
1/2 Cup of Blueberries (I use frozen Organic that Costco sells)
Dash of Nutmeg spice

Cooking:

I blend all these together into a batter, and yes they are purple until after they are cooked. I make two plate size pancakes that I cook in a large pan on Medium Heat. I eat the 1st one, while the 2nd one is still cooking. I spray Olive Oil flavored cooking spray on the pan.

Condiments:

I spray "Can't Believe It's Not Butter" on them and then I use Cary's Sugar Free Syrup which only has 30 calories per 1/4 cup.

* I forgot to include a picture of the 2% Cottage Cheese in the ingredients photo emoticon .

Hey, I found you guys. Yeah!

The pancakes look great; I am definetly going to try them. I love new healthy recipes that are packed with protein and fiber, so anything you got to share, I will absorb. I have been making a new protein & fiber smoothie in the mornings that I modified from the abs diet:

1 scoop GNC be-buff protein powder (I use this because it only has 100 calories)
1 TBLS peanut butter
1/4 cup oatmeal
8 oz water
and any fruit you like - I use about a 1/4 cup pineapple and 1/4 cup blackberries in this.

The whole smoothie only comes to like 300 calories and it is so filling and last me until my mid morning snack.

I would have never thought of putting oatmeal and pb in a fruit smoothie, but it is great!

I can't wait to start round 2 of p90x. My hubby is going to start his round 1 with me, so that should be fun and interesting all at the same time.

Hi there! How fun that you started your own thread! I'm also going to try to pancakes recipe. I'll be done round 1 August 4th and trying to figure out what to do next. I have a marathon scheduled December 6th, so will be training for that but am really enjoying the strength training I've been doing and want to continue to build muscle while I lean out...

Running out to get some groceries now but will catch up with you later!

Ciao

DJ: I'm 217 lbs at 31.3% bodyfat at day 60. You might have missed one of my posts. I said that you were rubbing off on me in that I went and bought a pound and a half of almonds and a scale to weigh portions. Goal is to get to a steady 2400 calories a day.

What marathon? I usually only do marathons in Ironman events and if it's just a running event, I like to stick to the half marathons....mainly cause I don't need to do too much additional training, but I usually do the Palm Beach Half/Marathon which I think is on the same day (Dec. 6th) this year, but I'm sure yours is in Cali.

Well I'd love to help and share with you....I'm passionate about this stuff, so I have tried to restrain myself on the other "MAY" thread, but that is the reason I wanted to start my own thread and share information, so that way if someone doesn't like what I have to say I'm not a nusuance in the thread they love to visit emoticon!

I am kind of a freak about weighing my food and portion contoling myself.....my eyes are way bigger than my stomach. I have eaten clean for 12 years, but my problem was portion control.....I can rack up the calories even with good/clean food! I really don't have crazy sugar or chocolate craving like some, but I just eat too much if I let my eyes be the judge. Portion controlling myself and making each day 2400 calories is really working for me, so all the trial and error has been worth it!

Now that you have a scale and almonds, you need to get some ziplock snack bags and measure out about ten 1 oz. bags at a time so you have them ready to take with you everyday. For me, preparing my food ahead amkes a big difference. I have gone 71 days without skipping a meal, and the reason is because I think and plan in advance!

Let me know how the 2400 calorie plan works for you and how you feel when you follow it....ie. more energy etc.?

I guess I'll have to get a food scale so I can fine tune my portions a bit. Last thing I need is to be left in the dust by you guys! emoticon

I'm also fortunate that I don't struggle much with sweets. But give me some mashed potatos and a good pot roast and It's on!!

As much as I love to count calories and portion control, I wouldn't get so wrapped up in saving 10 or 20 calories per scoop of protein....I just think there are more important things to consider when choosing a protein. I always choose a 100% Whey Protein Isolate (most good ones have 110 calories per serving)....the isolate is more pure and better quality. The whey isolate also has more protein per serving and less fat and lactose...if you are lactose intolerant, then isolate will be much better for you. There are some studies that the isolate has immune boosting properties, and anything that builds the immune system is ok in my book.

I buy my Isolate at Costco and a big tub of 48 servings is only $22...my wife uses Jay Robb Whey Protein which is also Isolate (it's expensive, like 23 servings is $40+...I'm too cheap, but she isn't emoticon) and she also takes Vega Health Optimizer which has 26 grams of protein and 22 carbs and is 240 calories....she uses this as an inbetween meal snack, but it's green and too scary looking for me emoticon. Jay Robb is THE BEST choice other than the expense, but it's the most natural without any artificial stuff and it...the reason it's so expensive is because it comes only from cows that aren't treated with rBGH, which is a synthetic growth hormone. Whole Foods carries it and they sell single serving packets so you guys should sample it...I must say it is the best tasting protein out there too! I might be dangerous now that posting pictures is so easy emoticon!

I love adding berries to my smoothies....so good for you, antioxidants, fiber etc...my favorite shake is usually 1/2 cup of berries and half a banana which totals only 1 total serving of fruit! I also put half a banana in my recovery shake, but this usually completes the serving of fruit cause I count 1/2 cup of berries in my pancakes as 1/2 a serving of fruit. Right now I'm not having too many smoothis cause my carb intake is higher in phase 3.
