Resistance Bands - What does the weight rating mean?
Hey all,

I've been testing out P90X lean this week before my wife and I officially start on Monday. We're really excited to start it! I've got too much pudge these days and need to "trim the fat" so-to-say. We're opting to use resistance bands for our training and I am a bit puzzled by something. I searched the boards and couldn't find an answer, so I've decided to post it here.

I've got the top end set (40/45/50) and was wondering what those weights actually mean. Do they offer 40lbs of resistance at all times, or only when stretched to a certain point? (like full extension on one-arm shoulder presses) If standing on the band for dual-arm exercises, is that 40lbs each, or 20lbs per arm? (these seem like silly questions when I type them out, but was uncertain of my assumptions)

Finally, for doing shoulder workouts, would you recommend stepping down to the 10 & 20 lb bands for me? The 40's are too much for me at the moment for those, but not sure if I need to worry about going all the way down to 10 lbs. (guess this could be a tough one to answer)

Because resistance increases as the band is stretched, the weight rating is really just a rough approximation. For me, it is actually pretty close doing bicep curls, but that would change for someone shorter or taller.

The actual rating does not really matter. You just need to pick a band and adjust it so that you reach failure in the target number of reps.

The red, green, blue, and black bands are very high for some of the shoulder work, especially stuff with straight arms. You want to be able to do at least 5-6 reps with good form, otherwise the weight is too much.

If you are doing this with your wife, you might want to get an inexpensive set of light weights, say 2, 3, 5, and 8 lbs. You both will probably get some use out of them on trouble spots early on, and you can keep using them later to keep the intensity up (holding small weights doing Kenpo punching, etc.)

Though the two 'common' band sets (pink-red, green-black?) should cover both your needs pretty well.
