Fella,

I am up to week three of the P90X program and firstly....I LOVE IT! My only problem is the Yoga. I have now accomplished this workout two times and I follow Tony's guidance closely but just do not like it. Does Yoga X give me a good workout???...yes! However, is there another workout in the P90X DVD set I could use in place of Yoga and still get results and not screw up the whole premise of the program? I considered replacing Yoga with Jogging and sguat jumping jacks. What are your thoughts? I would really appreciate diverse opinions.

Sincerely,

Brendan

What don't you like about Yoga? In my opinion, Yoga is one of the exercises that should not be substituted (unless you do Stretch X). It has attributes that none of the other DVDs have. It's strength training along with flexibility training and, to me, has a healing affect as well. I always feel refreshed (but worked) after Yoga X. I'm on week 16 (in other words, Round 2) and substituted the other non-resistance training days, except for Yoga X. I love it! So again, why don't you like it? I once read something saying you should probably do more of an exercise that is difficult for you, because it is probably the one exercise that will most improve your overall fitness. Your body is probably not used to it. Isn't that the same as muscle confusion? You got it!

I also hate the yoga and have given up on it.

First, I do not know what I am doing. Therefore it's difficult to keep up while straining to look at the TV to see what I'm suppose to be doing.

Secondly, it's too long.

After a couple weeks I concluded Yoga was not for me, and went running instead.
I know people post how it's the best thing, but I simply do not enjoy any part of that disk.

I'm also interested in what people who skip Yoga are doing.

Give yoga time, strength is a good thing but to be flexible is very important too. Men are naturally not as flexible as women and it may take longer for you to get into the positions but certainly worth trying. You may also need to take breaks or to modify the program to fit your needs, at least at first, but you will improve. Also, muscle will heal and perform better when it is stretched out. Use something taller than a block to start with if you need help and try to relax as much as possible. Being flexible has more than sports benefits.. emoticon

Not too many people honestly like it. But most people, in my opinion, do it. It's in the program for a reason. Tony will tell you that himself. Keep at it. Don't substitute it for a different program. Tony has another yoga DVD called Fountain of Youth. It can be purchased for around $19.99, depending on your coach or team member status. It's only 45 minutes.
But the point is, just keep doing your best. You will be surprised by your flexibility after 90 days. Everyone always is. emoticon

I happen to love the yoga x. It's challenging but if you keep at it you progress rapidly. It's a time to calm yourself and focus. There's really nothing to replace it. Even XStretch doesn't do the same. After yoga x I feel like I've had a great workout as well as increased flexability. But with the x stretch you just don't get that. Keep at it. Focus, breath and modify as needed.

I hated Yoga X.. at first.

The first 30 mins.. was tough. Even now, my shoulders are sore during all the warriors.

The you got those balancing acts after. Where your standing on one leg.

I dreaded Yoga X day.. until last this week.

I usually do P90x in the morning... but i had to work 3-11.. so I slept thru.

I got home around midnight and contemplated if I should just forget it. And for some reason I decided to do it.

I still get stuck on a lot of parts (as mentioned).. and one of my main issues is that my abs like to cramp up. So the yoga abs 7 was harsh on me.. i didnt complete it fully, but I did a bit of it.

All the twisting poses and even the crane I pushed hard to do this week.

I am in week 2 and yoga was definately tough but i love the feeling afterwards. i know at the start when bending at the waist i could barely reach my shins without bending my knees and at the end i could go all the way down and put the palms of my hands on the floor. so i know it is working not to mention i was drenched in sweat after i finished. I know what you mean about the unfamiliar moves being done. I watched the dvd once through so i could learn the terms for each position and how it was done so it was a lot easier when it came time to actually do the workout.

Previous to p90x I had been practicing yoga with a DVD by Baron Baptiste. Hubby and I tried the p90x Yoga but he couldn't stand it and I didn't feel the same emotional relaxation, so we opted to go back to the DVD I already had.

Yoga IS an important part of overall result and fitness though. It helps elongate your muscles after lifting. I agree that if you are going to substitute anything, it should be StretchX. Don't be afraid to look for other Yoga DVD's on the market though...there are some good instructors out there.

Some people find yoga to be boring (in general) because it moves so slowly. But honestly, with the crazy-go-go-world we live in, we NEED to take time to 'just be' for a few minutes. If you will allow your mind and spirit get into the moment, it's an incredible stress reliever!!

Hope this helps a little!emoticon

I just did my first YogaX and really didn't enjoy it. I have shorter arms (by about 4 inches), so most of the positions were just too difficult. I tried my best and modified were I could, but I don't feel like I was getting what was needed out of it.

Also, I don't know how they did those twists. As soon as my legs got more acute than 80 degrees to the ground, they just fell. I couldn't keep them up without using my arms. any suggestions?

I liked the stretching, but my arms/shoulders can only handle so many warriors.

how did you go from shins to the floor in just 2 weeks? that's only 2 workouts????

I greatly dislike Yoga X, as well. For me, it is NOTHING of what yoga is supposed to be and the "flow" is totally not there. I replaced it with a 90-minute DVD of the system of yoga I was practicing before I started with P90X and much prefer that. Tony is a great fitness instructor and motivator, a yoga instructor he is not.

I got to tell you P90x was the bain to my P90x program. I hated that workout. As someone else said, it is too long. It is hard, all the warriors kick my butt. I had never done yoga, and felt like a total clown. But Tony says it is important, so I stuck with it. After 90 days I still couldn't do crane, twisting half moon (which I call pretzel position) is U-G-L-Y. But I did it. I do it! I don't hate it anymore.

It still is my least favorite workout but I have made HUGE gains in my flexibility. I have 2 herniated discs in my back and had little flexibility left. touch my toes? Seriously? HA! but I can didn't think I would ever be able to do those things again. I can get into wheel. Heck I can even get up in crane for most of that 2 mins Tony is talking for! Maybe part of it is being able to see the progress I have made in that CD. part of it is probably stubornness. Guess it's like sitting for the CPA exam. Someone decided that it would be a good measure of my competence. Did I like it? NO. Was studying for it fun? NO

Is it easy? NO! Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!

Stick with it for 90 days then decide.

I hate yogax, But I love it!

The first 2 times was really hard. I'm not a flexible person at all, and I have problems with both my knees, so Yoga was REALLY challenging at first. I'm finding it better and better each week though, so I'm definitely sticking with it. It feels amazing to do.

To be honest. I don't even look at the Yoga X dvd. I do the stretching. I love the stretching it feels great to do it. It helps losen the muscles and keep them coming back for more. But, and I REPEAT here is the but.I do yoga with an actual instructor. My job pays for it so thats a plus in itself. But there is nothing that outways the gains of yoga in my eye. I am 24 years old and used to be really flexable. But with stress and everything else life has to offer it goes straight to the body. Trust me on this your body holds everything you throw at it than some. But yoga and a bone message helps relieve tension, heals the body, mind and soul. Not to mention there are benefits that just can't be explained so I say find a real yoga instructor that has been doing yoga for 20 years or more. Who may be a little eccentric and doesn't mind just telling you what they hope to give you as a new student to yoga.

First, what is it about the YogaX that you don't like?
Is it yoga in general that is bad or just this dvd?

I wouldn't replace yoga with jooging or any other cardio because what yoga does is
help your body with two things...... Flexibility and balance strength
these are very important things when you are on a new health life style change where you want to transform your body

If you're getting frustrated with some of the positions just take a step back
and do as much as you can do
But you'll need to push yourself with yoga
With the other workouts you can just follow along and get what you need out of it
But with yoga you have to push a little more

Yoga X - yeah - HATE IT with a passion...am I giving up on it? NO WAY! One of the other X'ers said not to give up on it until you've done it for 90 days. I agree with that approach for me.

I'm so tight as a drum..I've got blocks that are 10" too short standing on end! I'll get there if it kills me as flexibility is critical to body health even if I dislike the dvd.

For me it's the toughest workout. Long, boring, frustrating and excruciating...BRING IT!

When the going gets tough the tough get going. BRING IT...

But to those who really don{t want to do it. I would just try the first 45 minutes and just skip the rest until you feel you are ready. It is definitely worth it because you are working out muscle groups in such a different way and that has a lot to do with the P90X concept of muscle confusion.

I'm in week 4, day 1 of the lean program and I noticed a significant difference in my Yoga X this morning.
The moves were much easier to get into and I could hold them for longer than the previous 3 weeks.
I can feel some sort of shift in my body as if it isn't resisting as much as it was before. I'm haven't been very flexible my entire life and I feel this is really helping that.
My body is feeling better than it has in years.
Don't give up on the Yoga...I think, while it's not an easy dvd to follow, everyone will greatly benefit from the routines.
My .02 cents.

Hey. I have a hard time with it too, BUT...Yoga doesn't just help you with flexibility, but also balance. I get through it by not worrying if it is perfect...since no one is around to see my horrible form. But I've done it for 4 weeks and little by little, I'm getting better....I get really excited when I finally get a move right! I figure it will take the whole 90 days to look like a begginner, but I'm gonna keep it up....the pro's of what yoga will do for you are much greater than the cons of having a hard time with it. keep at it.

I agree that its hard to do it while looking at the screen to see what the heck I'm supposed to be doing, hard on the neck in some poses. I've done it twice so far and was amazed that I sweat so much! I cant balance for squat and hit the deck a lot, and I cant get into the meditative, mystic part of it, but the way my back feels after(best in years after the first time) and the work out/flexibility has me sayin I wont quit it, goal now is to complete it w/o going ass over tea kettle.
