Weight loss vs size loss
9/9/09 11:07 AM
Hey all,

I love this workout program, I am 5' 10" and started P90X weighing 220lbs. I dropped almost 15lbs in the first two weeks, but during my 3rd week now I am noticing that I have hardly lost any more weight. I do feel smaller, but my mid section is not losing the wieght... should I need be as concerned with this, and wait to see how they are during phase 2 or 3 does the weight come off more, or should I be focusing on my body size? please help, because it is getting a bit more discouraging...

Weight loss ebbs and flows, so there's probably no reason to worry. Make sure you measure inches, that'll tell you if you're shrinking. It might be that the muscle gain and fat loss are balancing each other out.

How many calories are you eating?

FYI, this happened to me as well and I'm fairly certain it was because I was eating too little. Lost 12 pounds in phase 1 but only 6 total in 2 and 3. This may not be the case for you, but it's something to watch for.

I am eating around 2000 calories... I am doing mostly portion control because I do like to cook (gives me some flexability and variety). I do not however use any form of recovery drink or protein shake, that is changing as of tomorrow, adding in the portein shakes.

I had a similar experience in round 2. When I worked out, weightloss stopped. When I took a break, it started again. As your metabolism heats up, you may need more cals to stop going into starvation mode.

Check your cal level against the Beachbody calculator. If you are 5'10 and 205 now and doing X, you may not be eating enough. I am about the same height but a little heavier and stalled on weightloss eating 2400. Had to get to 2700 to lose again (counter intuitive I know, but the BB support staff coached me through it).

If you keep stalled and know your diet is clean, you might try upping cals by 300 to see if it makes a difference. Give it at least week to see which way the scale moves.

Exactly. You really should follow the nutrition guide, for reasons explained in ths FAQ.

Same for me, I increased the cals and here's what happened. I DIDN'T gain a single pound. My energy levels went up drastically and I once again felt excited to do my workouts again like I was in week 1 and I could bring it even harder. After a few weeks of moving from 1800 to 2400 to 2800 and finally to 3k, I started losing weight again. It's completely counter-intuitive, but it magically works. emoticon

I will try increasing the calories this week (week 4 for me), and will update in another week with how things are going.

Increased caloric intake, weight is fluxing between 205 and 210. size is getting better, strength up (woot!!). Just wondering about why the weight isn't coming down....

Your muscles could be recovering from the decreased calories over the last week or so. If that's the case, well, muscles do weigh more than fat. emoticon

My brother actually started this program at 200 lbs (he's also around 5'10", maybe closer to 5'11"). He looked like a pear when he started, but right now at the beginning of week 8, he's still around 200 lbs, only he is starting to look more like a "V". To give you an idea, I think his body fat was around 20% and we started at around 2000 calories. My brother is now up to around 2700 calories and still seeing results (he was crashing when we were both on 2400 calories).

Try using the meal planner on this site and see how many calories it tells you to eat. It seems to be pretty accurate for both myself and my brother, and we have very different body composition. Here's to your continued success!

Can you post the link to the calorie guide?

The Beachbody Meal Planner.

For future reference, it's just under "Eat Smart" at the top, and "Meal Plans".

We have a tight budget in my family and I can't afford to get the upgraded account, so I can't use the online tool.

I haven't gained weight per sae... just fluxing between 205 and 208 over the past 2.5 weeks

Weight loss doesn't turn on a dime,.... its more like a Supertanker.

Personally when I lose weight it works from my face to arms, chest and then top of stomach.
At least it shows up that way.

Work out hard. Eat clean. it'll happen.

Cut and paste this into your browser.

how can someone tell if they are eating too little? i mean i hate to sound like a jerk, but the nutritional plan doesnt really fit into my lifestyle right now, and if I eat an apple for lunch im lucky.I probably eat twice a day. Im about 5'10" 220lbs and just started p90x, should I be grabbing cans of SlimFast on my way to work and substitute those for meals or snacks, or is it better for me to just not eat seeing as I usually have big family dinners and I have plenty of fat to burn off.

edit: Funnyman Mike (or anyone really):
I used that website you listed. If im consuming 1,6400 cals/day, and burning 3,230 cals/week, how many cals should I eat?

How many cals are you getting now? If you're weight hasn't changed in 2.5 weeks, then it's likely that you are at or very very close to your current calorie consumption rate. This is great news because now that you know what it is, you know how low you can safely go (about -500 cals max) and lose weight without affecting your metabolism too much. FYI, you are almost certainly still burning fat, but it's at a slower rate so muscle is buidling at rougly the same rate.
