50+ Let's Get Goin' !!
9/14/09 9:54 PM
Welcome 50+ers!! I'm deb4peace - and I'm 57 and have been packin' on the pounds for the last 10+ years - to the tune of gaining 35 lbs. in the last 10 years. I'm no longer resigned to the ole "Oh, this must be menopause..." or "Oh, it sucks gettin' old doesn't it!!". Let's support each other on this fitness journey.

I'm a professional who thinks I have no time to exercise. But hey - maybe this Ten Minute Trainer might work. I'm on day 6. I'm definitely getting stronger. I'm doing the Lean Jean thing - eating the 1000 calorie diet to the tee and doing the ten minute cardio plus ten minutes of abs, lower body, total body or yoga flex. Gotta believe this will be a good start. Even if I don't get the results in 10 days - I'll go for twenty. That will work for sure.

Please write and tell me your story. Let's support each other!! Debemoticon

Deb4peace here - Is there anyone else out there over 50?? Sure would love to hear from you all. Especially you women. The men can shed pounds lickity split can't they - must be that testosterone!! But I think its harder for women - especially after menopause!! What has been your experience?

Alright!! I'm on day 10 of the TMT. I've been doing the Lean Jean program - 1000 calories a day and 20 minutes of the TMT. I must admit days 8 and 9 - I didn't do the work out. But hey - its a start - 8 out of ten days is pretty good isn't it - It's a start. And I have lost 4 1/2 pounds and - I can't believe it - about 10 inches!! Crazy!! I haven't tried on those tight jeans yet. I'm going to give it a couple more days - since I missed two work outs. I don't think I could keep doing this 1000 calorie diet however - getting a little loopy on that. But tomorrow I will start the Low Carb 1400 calorie diet and keep doing the 20 minutes of TMT.

Just to let you know - I have had 8 car accidents and several falls, 2 frozen shoulders with surgery and have fibromyalgia and migraines. The first couple of days - I couldn't even do all the exercises. I still can't do everything because my shoulders are weak. And the first 3 days I was really flared up and had constant headaches. then by day 4 I actually started feeling better. So I'm keeping with it. I know exercise is the best thing for fibromyalgia. You just have to take it slow and start out easy.

Anyone else out there with chronic pain trying to get goin"??

Over 50's and chronic pain sufferers - Would love to hear from you - join in this journey with me and lets support each other!! deb4peaceemoticon

I'm 51 and have really gotten out of shape and am a shocking 65 lbs overweight. None of my cloths fit me well and I don't feel like I look good in them. I'm determined to get home from the office by 6:30pm and do some exercise. I've been doing 30 minutes on my recumbant bike and 30 minutes of boflex or total gym three times a week. I'm getting stronger but I'm not losing weight. I need to be stricter with my diet. I just ordered 10 minute work out and will start that as soon as it comes. I'm trying to mix up workouts so that I stay interested. Anyway, I could use the support or any ideas anyone has!

Hi. Thanks for posting. I think we can support each other. It's hard to lose weight at our age - there's no doubt about it. I've tried several different tactics. When I saw the 10 minute trainer - I thought - I have no excuse - I can at least do 10 minutes a day in my own home. Because of prior injuries I can't do everything exactly right. But I've been at it a couple weeks now - and I have lost 5 1/2 pounds and my pants are a little loser! Sounds like you are very disciplines with your work outs - I have to admit I have never been disciplined to exercise. So this is a real challenge. I really enjoy the 10 minute workout - I'm actually doing the cardio plus alternating the other workouts for a total of 20 minutes most days. Its okay to miss a day here and there.

The diet is really important. I've tried lots of different diets. I really like their set up on the website. They give you a full day's menu and break down the calories, carbs, protein and fats. I started with 10 days of 1000 calories - the Lean Jean program. If you didn't order that part - let me know - I can email you the diet plan. Now I'm on the 1400 calorie diet. I just went to the store and bought everything I needed -then I had to dedicate time to fix things instead of just grabbing whatever is handy. The diet definitely pays off. Plus its really important to drink 6-8 glasses water a day. I just keep thinking - water goes in - fat washes out!! Keep at it and let me know how its going! Cheers - deb4peaceemoticon

I just bought my mom 10 minute trainer for her 60th birthday. I am so excited for her to get started on it.
I'll tell her about this group and invite her to join. She is "pstcrdldy" but doesn't have her profile filled out yet.
I'll also keep my eye on this group for pointers for her. Thanks for starting it!

I did 30 minutes of the various 10 minute trainer programs yesterday and today. I've watched what I eat - no junk but somehow gained back a 1 lb and a half. My husband is working out with me so that's fun. We are so out of shape! We huff and puff through it! We're getting slightly better though already.

Hi gals! I'm already on another thread, but when I saw this one for 50+ I had to check it out! I'm 57 and had gained 60 lbs over 6 years (taking care of my mother, who passed in March this year). After she passed, I promised her I would start taking care of myself (she was always worried about my weight gain - I was a skinny-minny all my life up until those 6 years). Since the gain, I have never been able or interested in exercising, going to a gym, dieting - NONE of it! Saw an infomercial for TMT and thought "I could handle 10 minutes a day!"

I've been doing it over 100 days now, and I actually MISS it when "life happens" and I can't get a w/o in. That is unheard of for me!! I got great results in the beginning (I've lost 18 lbs and 9 inches), but I have stalled in recent weeks (had a few physical problems that kind of got in the way of my commitment). I *KNOW* the results come when your w/o's are consistent and your eating is clean. I used the diet plan on the website also when I was getting started. I discovered how often and how much I justified those little nibbles on chips and chocolate (my 2 biggies)! No wonder I was gaining, gaining, gaining! I think I need to go back to that diet tool and remind myself of all my little "cheats."

You guys have got the beginnings of an AWESOME thread here - keep it up!! I know I couldn't have done what I have without the motivation, support, and kicking booty of the gals on my other thread. These boards are a TERRIFIC tool. You'll start to feel like family soon! Only it's family with the same issues and goals - and that's a formula for REAL SUPPORT.

I'm on the thread called "Working Moms - No Time To Work Out - Here's The Answer" (or something like that!). I'm not a mom and never have been, and I'm the oldest one on the thread, but the ladies made me feel so welcome I've been there ever since I started TMT. Pop over and see us if you'd like!

In the meantime, CONGRATULATIONS on taking the TMT plunge, and I hope you continue to have a great journey here! (I remember someone has already lost 10 inches??? WAY TO GO!!) emoticon

(The one drawback to these threads is that when you are posting, you can't go back and see what others posted - you either have to make notes, or do it from memory...)

Oh! Remember to take "before" pictures! I know it's uncomfortable, but do it! And take more at various milestones. Trust me, you will be glad you did! And you can submit your success stories to BeachBody and maybe win prizes. (One of the gals on our thread was contacted by BeachBody last week - they are interested in putting her in their next infomercial! Pretty exciting!!)

Keep on pp (pushing play)!
Jineen

Well that is so encouraging to hear. I've only been doing 10 minute workout for 6 days but it's hard.

So, I had lost 2 1/2 lbs and am eating only veggies and low fat meat, mostly fish. The last two days howeve, I got on the scale and I'm back up 2 lbs. and I've been working out harder and doing three ten minute workouts. Do I need to shock my system with just veggies or what. I think I have snail paced metabolism. And I didn't sign on for the monthly membership where you can see the diet but I know how to eat right since I've been on weight watchers, physicians weight loss, beverly hills diet, etc.etc in the past.

My husband who is working out with me says we need to switch to just vegetables and fruits and just a little fish or chicken so that we can shock our system.

Comments anywone?

Hi roadsie,

Yes, it is hard - Tony really gives intense w/o's for being just 10 minutes. Just do what you can BUT KEEP GOING! When I first started TMT, I did cardio ONLY for the first 2 weeks. And even then I could not do all the moves, and I especially could not keep up with Janie! But I kept going and soon added total body (again, could not do all the moves). But I started noticing I was able to do more and more of the cardio - until I finally did it with the resistance band on the door hinge! (Only did that a couple of times - I found the w/o was plenty intense without the band.) And I continued to increase my total body w/o also.

Prior to TMT, I huffed and puffed walking up two flights of stairs. Now I can go up and down 4 flights at a brisk pace and still carry on conversation. You will start to notice things like this also. I would encourage you to notice them and celebrate them!! They are the little things that show real progress!

I don't know what to recommend about your eating. I know that for me, "diet" is a 4-letter word and just brings up all kinds of resentment, discouragement, and rebellion when I think I have to go on a diet. Also, to me, a "diet" is something I would do temporarily until I reached a goal, and then all bets were off and I went back to my same old stuff. What has worked best for me is the realization that I have had terrible eating habits that got me into my situation, and I need to change those habits and start eating "clean". That does not mean "diet". To me it means changing my lifestyle so that I start new habits that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Don't be discouraged if your results are slow to show. KEEP GOING! And remember, if you are building muscle, you may not notice a difference in the scales. If you are doing this for better overall health, keep that in sight as your goal and forget the scale altogether!

Well, sorry, I seemed to have hogged it again. Do you guys have any coaches on your thread? It might help if you can find one you feel compatible with and ask her to join your thread here. We have 2 coaches on our thread and they are GREAT. A coach may be better able to answer your technical questions about diet, shocking your system, etc. I'm certainly no expert - just talking from my own experience.

KEEP GOING! The results will come! emoticon

All the best,
Jineen

jineen,
you are the best for taking time to respond! We (hubby and I) did TMT cardio and yoga tonight and found we got through cardio a little easier! YAAAAAAAAh. I love the yoga stretches as they make me feel so great. We ate a salad with turkey and fat free cheese rollups on top so that was healthy. I have blueberries and fat free whipped cream in case I need a snack later which I'm just thinking about going to bed as work was a bear today. Strategy planning time in the bank UGGGGGH.

Our goal in the end is to work our way after 8 weeks to another program. We'll assess it after we get past 6 weeks.

I do have more energy daily I noticed. I still was out of breath after one flight of stairs at the bank. Someday, I'm going to arrive in my bosses office and be able to talk when I get there!

Keep at it yourself! This is fun!

rhoadsie,

I just hope no one thinks I'm butting in... I was just so thrilled to see this thread for 50+ I had to come over and comment! We post to our thread every single day, and boy, if you miss a day it takes a long time to catch up with everyone!

I don't want to take away ANYTHING from this thread here, but if you guys want to pop over to ours and check it out, please feel free to join us anytime! (Again, it's the "Working Moms" thread.)

We are currently on day 2 of a 30-day workout challenge that our 2 coaches set up for us. We're all pretty excited about it because some of us who have been around a bit longer have fallen back into some bad habits and have stalled on our progress. So this is just the kick in the behind we needed to get revved up again!

In any case, all you 50+ers, keep on keeping on! As Tony says, "It's just 10 minutes!!" emoticon

Have a great evening,
Jineen

OH! rhoadsie, you are VERY fortunate to have a hubby supporting you in this endeavor! It's so much easier to do it with someone who understands what you're going thru and has the same goals. I'm single, so I think that's one reason I find the threads SOOOO helpful!

Hi Rhodsie, So glad you joined in. I agree with Jineen - forget the scale for awhile. The weight will go up and down 2-3 pounds from day to day - so that can be discouraging. And remember gaining muscle and losing fat affects the overall weight as well. Just like Jineen, I couldn't do all the workouts - still can't do all the moves and I've been doing it for a month now. But some of the work outs are getting easier. I may not be able to ever do all the moves - but I'm keeping at it nevertheless. I d feel better and that's important. As far as diet goes - Eating lots of veggies is good; some protein and you do need some carbs as well. You need to have enough calories and eat the three meals and 2 snacks a day so your body doesn't think its starving! But you probably know all that since you've done weight watchers.

Thanks Jineen for joining in. Your encouragement is really helpful. I have connected with someone and asked her to be my coach. Maybe she will join in on our thread as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hang in there Rhodsie and keep going!! Deb4peace

I dropped off the MB for awhile but not my exercise. We did the bonus spot on TMT tonight. That was really fun and I could do it!

I drink a lot of water but have been miserable about eating all my meals/snacks.

Hi again Rhodsie, Don't feel badly - I have been ill this past couple of weeks and haven't done any work outs. I finally went for a walk this evening which was a start. I plan to do my TMT again tomorrow hopefully. I wasn't able to stick to the diet either while I was ill but I'm ready to get going again. It's great your husband is doing this with you. I find that I just can't buy the stuff I shouldn't eat - just can't have it in the house. that makes it a little easier to keep on track. For a treat I have the Weight Watcher's fudgesickles. Also - have you tried agave syrup or xylitol sugar substitute? They are very sweet but low glycemic index. Well, I've got to get to bed - sleep is so important to feel good and also help with the weight loss!! Just wanted to connect with you. Cheers, Deb4peace

deb4peace, I'm so sorry to hear you've been sick. I always hate it when that happens and disrupts a routine. I give you credit for having your head in the right place to take a day at a time to work back toward a healthy lifestyle.

I am loving this working out. Work is always so stressful and other things in my life are not able to be changed as quickly as i'd like so, working out and getting healthy is the part of my plan I'm focusing on.

I'm reading Jillian Michaels book on Metabolism and that's helping me get my focus on eating right and why. I always have to know the why.

I have lost 4 lbs so far and that's a start. But, I feel really good and stronger already. That's probably the most amazing thing to me! I kept thinking with my bad back (I have a disc that was taken out and now I have athritis in that spot so it's sore most of the time.) that I was never going to be able to too much in terms of exercise but, I have found that I can again and in fact it seems to be helping manage the soreness.

Anyway, got my three tmt sessions in, my husband's out of town so he missed 2 days! He says he's so stiff from not doing the TMT and can't wait to get back.

I turned 60 in August and have been slowly gaining weight over a year and a half of not working. I did weigh 190 lbs. and now am at 233 lbs.I get tired very easily and always take elevators, because I have trouble climbing the stairs...huffing and puffing.

Waiting for TMT to get here( Oct. 23rd) so I can change, for the better.

I watched IRA B. success video on his using the TMT and it inspired me GREATLY to do something.

I have read that a lot of results don't start showing ( as in inches lost) for a few weeks.
But I will be posting my progress when I get the program.

Thanks for listening.

YOU WILL LOVE IT. I've been doing TMT for 24 days and am seeing results. The first week I didn't see anything and the weight was slow, same with the second week but the 3rd week, I have more energy, I can do more of exercises, my pants are fitting loser because I've lost inches and 5 lbs. It doesn't sound like much but it's really big toward changing my life. I want to lose 60 more lbs and get healthy again! I understand about the weight creeping up. I think just moving makes you feel healthy and then you start feeling like eating healthy and then it begins to make a difference. Keep posting so that we can do this together!

I can hardley wait until my program gets to me in a few more days.

When you first started, how many of the excercises could you do in any one of the individual workouts??? A friend let me borrow his advanced TMT DVD and after 3 days I finished 3 of the 10 Core Cardio excercises( by using small 3 lb. dumbbells since I don't have any bands)and I am feeling my muscles getting worked already.

I had started eating more salads, fruit and veggies a few weeks ago and hope the TMT will have some kind of food plan with it.
I am ready to Press Play......where is that UPS man??????emoticon

My husband and I started the program together. We just did one routine for each of the first three days then we added two a night for a few nights and after the first week we decided to do all three a night. It's still hard to do all three in one night for us. Everytime we do it we can do more reps of the hard things and get through them easier. We want to build up to P90X eventually.

Some simple menus come with the program. I use them off and on because we really eat healthy now anyway.

In a week and a half we move to the accelerated program which includes core cardio and upper body(my weakness!)

We're trying to make all this stuff part of our lives.
