what to do when your sick? p90x...
Showing 12 results.
Im in phase 1 week 4 of P90x.... I went hard all three weeks and i know the 4th week is recovery week so i am able to get a rest from chest and back.

However, my 4th week im a little sick. My eyes are burning, i got a stuffy nose, teary eyes, allergies, raspy throat.

My question to you is, what do you do when you are feeling similiar or sick in general?

Do you keep on trucking even if your energy is at a all time low since your sick or do you wait get better than go at it again...

im going crazy cuz i feel that if i attempt to even take just one more day off i will loose anything i have gained and i hate to think that way but i just feel like shit and dont think i can do the workouts

Anyone has insight on what i should do....

I am in no way advising you to do anything, whatever you choose to do is at your own risk! On week 2 of P90X (I am still currently on my first round, so this was back when I was still barely getting back in shape), I was feeling a little under the weather on Tuesday, which for me is Plyometrics. I felt the usual symptoms of a cold coming on (sore throat, slight fever, maybe a little nauseous) so I just popped a vitamin C pill, drank a bunch of water, and went right through it. I actually got a good workout (didn't really suffer much, well, my legs would beg to differ, but I felt alright otherwise) and the days following, I felt better. I ended up coughing out a bunch of phlegm for the rest of the week (pretty much confirming that I killed the cold) and I never got the usual high fever and dizzyness that happens during the worst part of it.

Maybe I got lucky, or I just did well in taking care of myself at the right time. Either way, you just have to pay attention to your body, and don't overdo anything. I hope you get better soon.

It isn't a good idea to work out when you're sick.

This is what I found:

Experts like to cite a rule of thumb known as the "neck rule." If your symptoms are all located above your neck (stuffy nose, scratchy throat, headache), you almost certainly have a head cold and can hit the road or treadmill safely. If, on the other hand, you have a fever, congestion in your chest and lungs, or feel achy, it is probably a sign of flu, bronchitis, or another more serious ailment, and you should rest up. (Exercising with a fever will make you more vulnerable to dehydration, among other ill effects.)

But the neck rule isn't foolproof, and a little common sense is always a good idea. "The above-the-neck rule is a good one, but I'd say severe above-the-neck symptoms warrant cessation from regular exercise until the symptoms abate," says Jeffrey Woods, PhD, professor of kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Even Olympic athletes need a day or two off every once in a while."

Even if you pass the neck test and are determined to get a workout in, you should take it easy at first. "To be prudent, I'd recommend cutting exercise duration and intensity when symptoms are present," says Woods.

Daryl Rosenbaum, MD, director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, recommends that people with colds begin working out at 50 percent intensity. If symptoms improve after the first five to 10 minutes (as they often do), you can gradually increase the length and effort of your workout up to about 80 percent to 90 percent of your usual routine.

"Moderation is the key," says Dr. Rosenbaum. "Studies have shown that people suffering from the common cold who get up and get moving actually feel better. If you go too far, however -- either with extreme short-term activity or long-term overtraining -- the immune system weakens. A viral cold that is allowed to linger for longer than normal could create sinus conditions that are ripe for a bacterial sinusitis to take over."

There are some other precautions to keep in mind. Staying hydrated during exercise is always important; it is especially so if you're planning to exercise with a cold. The nasal drainage associated with colds can hasten dehydration, and some over-the-counter cold remedies containing antihistamines (many cough syrups, for instance) can dry you out further, Dr. Rosenbaum points out.

Wow. Now that might make the FAQ. Where'd you get those sources? Was it from another article?

I am on week 4 right now, but on week 3, I felt like I was getting sick fast. My pulse went up to a resting pulse of 120 to 130, I felt hot, and weak like I was coming down with a cold. Then I started coughing, and eventually threw up. After that, I felt better, but still a little sick. Then, I did yoga x, and I think I burned it out. After that I felt better, and 100 percent the next day.

Now I am on week 4 and after doing Kenpo X 2 days ago, I came down with a sore throat, and as a result could not sleep, and lost a work out. Today, I feel better, and am supposed to do Yoga X. I think I might be overdoing it, or just have too many kids, cause they are always getting sick at school. I don't know if it was the kids, or the workout that made me sick, and being sick sucks.

That being said, I am going to attempt to do Yoga X tonight, I hope it makes me feel better again. Since doing this program I have felt 100 percent better, younger, and have more energy. But, that sore throat kicked my ass. I hope the Yoga X helps me like last time.

The yoga x worked and it seemed like I sweated the cold out, but the last 2 weeks have been hell. The sickness goes away, then comes back. I felt like I was getting sick earlier, now after my workout I feel strong again and healthy.

I am so glad I found this post! Good info from Karen. But I'm still left with a question...I had just started week 3 of P90X lean at the beginning of this week, but came down with a severe cold on Tuesday. I have done nothing but sleep the past few days, and I think it is probably mono, so there is nothing I can do but rest and wait. So now that I am at least 3 days behind in my workouts, what should i do?! I don't want to start back at day 1, but I also don't want to mess with the program. Anyone been in a similar situation before?

If it is, in fact, mono, you really should seek the advice of a doctor before continuing any exercise program. If it is just a cold, begin today like it is the first day of week 3, and keep going.
