I was trying to find some stuff of interest that you guys may not have covered, but browsing through your older newsletters, you guys really hit a wide range of topics. Excellent job so far!

I'll try to offer some suggetions that may have slipped from my browsing and already been covered. If that's the case, please point me to the newsletter as I'm interested!

Overtraining: people hear it all the time, yet I don't think many know really what it means. I know you guys have FAQs on this stuff that sadly isn't looked at enough. I see things like on WOWY or even the boards that say that some people do P90X and Insanity on the same day (not mix/match workouts, but same day doubles). Is stuff like that even healthy? Would Beachbody ever recommend this? Heck, should I take two recovery drinks a day then? I thought P90X and Insanity already delivered great results in 90 and 60 days respectively. Do people really believe that they can accelerate their results (which already already phenominal) doing this?

Sugar: you guys had a newsletter saying that sugar is worse than fat when it comes to obesity and health risks, yet stuff like the P90X protein bar has sugar (though I guess moderation must have been mentioned in there somewhere)! I know you guys mention stuff like the glycemic index in that same article (and showing how honey is still better than refined sugar), but people see stuff like 38g of sugar in the recovery drink and automatically think that is bad. I know you guys even had a newsletter talking about the different kinds of carbs, like simple sugars and complex carbs like fiber, but I think a lot of people still don't understand. Some people want to see 0g sugar on labels and will even be fooled by stuff like sugar alcohol (well, I guess I shouldn't say it that way, since I really have no idea what it is). I still think there's a lot of room for discussion on sugar.

Sodium: you guys also had a newsletter showing how too much salt can be bad. How about people who don't get enough salt? Of course, we need salt to live, but some people still might not be getting enough. Does unsalty sweat have anything to do with it or is that even a bad thing? How about talking about potassium as well and some steps we could take daily to make sure we're getting enough of both (at least for people on extreme programs like P90X or Insanity that have you in your own pool)? Also, are antiperspirants a good thing for people who sweat out a lot of salt (like during the day, not during the workout). Is that even a valid question? *uneasy laugh*

Again, I really hope these specifics weren't already covered and provide some ideas, but if they already were, I'd love to be pointed in the right direction so I can read up. Thanks!

Oh, and how about the pros and cons of proportionally developing your muscles versus trying to overdevelop some of them. I see some people who don't care about lower body and just want upper body strength (usually men), and I see some people (usually women) that see P90X and go, "Wow, only one leg routine?" (I personally don't see anything wrong with it as I think it's the hardest workout; I never neglected my legs yet I feel the burn early and often).

I would like to see an article about the science behind some of the supplements and stuff that beachbody has to offer, how they work, why they work, how much they will improve whatever they are trying to improve.
Also, beachbody says that sometimes, in order to lose weight, we need to start eating more calories, while I know this is true it doesn't apply to everyone so an explanation behind that might be good too.
And last would be just dieting to lose weight. BB says over and over that exercise is essential to lose weight, but they also say that a calorie defict is essentially what causes us to lose weight, can't someone lose weight if they still eat at a defict and don't exercise?
I don't know if any of those can be made into a full newsletter, or if they would be in support of beachbody though so it's all good, mayatola had some good ideas as well.

This maybe to much to put into one newsletter but...

Id be really interested in knowing more about how the body works. As in the process(es) your body uses after you eat say sugars, proteins, complex carbs, leafy green veggies or fats. How does each effect your blood sugar levels. How insulin levels effect your weight loss/weight gain. How veggies effect your insulin levels. At what point in your blood sugar level does your body start storing calories as fat. Can your body store fat and burn fat at the same time? What does the body do with proteins and fats when you are not eating any carbs?(keto). What is the process your body uses to use those proteins and fat as energy sources.

Thats all that comes to mind at the moment. Ill update as I can think of more.

Injuries and how to modify routines so you can keep working out.

Unfortunately for me when doing a dumb bell exercise I ripped my supra spinatus tendon in my right shoulder. I was only pulling 25# which is light for me as I have strong arms, but it went anyway. I was in phase 3 of X, shrigged it off and kept going to extent that I could. Now waiting for shoulder surgey I cant just sit around, Doc says just listen to your body. So I am. I switched to X lean and I ma using light weights 5, 10 & 15. I cant do shoulder/chest flys and wide pull ups are a no no as well. So i skip them and keep going, occasionally switching to 10# bands. The moral of the story for me was stop working out, get checked out, heal for awhile (yes you gotta stop) then start back up doing the same thing with little to no wieght.

It feels good to modify and keep workig out again. The wieght is falling off from the summer build up of not working out.

Maybe you can write on how important it is to take care of joints during the workouts, e.g. the elbows during shoulder exercises, knees and ankles during ply and legs etc. Then finally give some tips on how to take care of them, I am quite sure that people will be interested in that.

You could provide us with some recipes for whey protein (chocolate, vanilla or plain)with the 4:1 ratio. Since shakeology is very expensive and some people dont buy that. emoticon

I feel like killing myself right now because I had such a great idea last night but I cant remember it right now. emoticon Well anyways, I'll post it as soon as I remember it this time.

(1) I was thinking about this the other day. You guys have written a LOT about post-workout nutrition (both Recovery Formula and meals), but not much about pre-workout nutrition. I think this would be a good topic for an article or newsletter. I think a lot of people would enjoy informing themselves regarding what to eat or not to eat before a workout and about the multitude of "pre-workout" supplements out there, whether they be based on caffeine, arginine, glutamine, creatine, etc.

(2) Regarding the Recovery Drink, there is mention that 4:1 is the target, but you can adjust from 3:1 to 5:1, but I have never seen WHY you would change it to 5:1 or 3:1 to depending on your goal (i.e., if you want to bulk up take one or lean out take another.... not idea if this has anything to do with the reason, and my intuition is that it doesn't, but just to demonstrate the point -- what are the reasons to go 3:1 versus 5:1?)

You can also write what a lunch box should contain. I am a college student and I really have to struggle with this because there is never anything healthy in the cafeteria, I sometimes take an apple but I've heard that an apple in an empty stomach can make you gassy. So the frequency of apple as my lunch has decreased even though it never made me gassy. emoticon

Someone already mentioned over training. I would be interested to also hear about Plateaus. The common feedback on the boards seems to be eat more. But once you have tried that, what then? Should I eat less if I was eating too much?

I really liked one of the messages you guys posted that sometimes you just have to hang in there and change comes after 6 weeks. That was really helpful advice in my case, my weight did not budge for a while, but after 6 weeks I suddenly dropped a bunch. But then I plateaued again. Maybe explain the 6 weeks suggestion a little more, why is that? After dropping 1-2 pounds a week for months, I am now hitting one plateau after another. Dropping the last 10-15 pounds seems to be a lot harder. So a 2nd topic could be how to drop the last 10 lbs. anything different?

3rd topic could be how to build a year long plan and how to peak for a sport. Steve, I have read your blogs and I think I have figured out a year long plan - though not totally sure yet. But an article on year long planning would be awesome. How about something to mix P90X, 1-1s and Insanity? Instead of just doing hybrid rounds, have a round focused on strength building, one for cardio, one for power, and then peak for the "season" to do something fun. The details are harder to put together though. For example, I have seen suggestions that once you are in season, it is ok to cut back the P90X strength workouts to just 2 a week - or none (?). But which two, or ideas on how to pick which two?

Thanks,

Cyrus

I was looking through old newsletters again, and maybe my browsing skills are bad, but I don't think I saw any newsletter regarding a person's somatotype and how they might want to adjust their nutrition and/or workouts for optimal results. For instance, I've heard that people who are more natural endomorphs wouldn't want to go to a higher carb phase like the standard athletic diet (60/20/20) and that they really need to do more cardio per week in order to help burn fat.

When I look at myself, I tend to notice that I'm somewhat of a "hard gainer" and definitely fit the ectomorph profile (not 100% though), however I seem to hang on to fat a little more like an endomorph might. Of course, I tried out this online quiz and apparently I'm a cross between an ectomorph and mesomorph (yeah right, and I was pretty truthful about the answers, no sense lying to myself). What's the best way to find out what kind of body type you are? And should we really try to tailor our nutrition plans and workouts to them? Again, for instance, I've heard that "complexes" (from the description: several exercises strung together with little or no rest between them) are good for endomorphs. Well, my brother is definitely an endomorph (though possibly with slight mesomorph characteristics, definitely 0 on the ectomorph scale), with tree trunks for legs and calves that would make any bodybuilder proud (but an upper torso that is still sadly somewhat flabby, yet powerful). He finds exercises like the lunge-kickback-curl-press in the Core Synergystics to be one of his favorites (he says he can do them all day long, but he definitely feels the burn).

I know there is no substitute for hard work and a clean, healthy diet, but there are those certain, really trying times that just make people search for answers (even when they're working so hard and they just need patience). I've seen so many different kinds of results from all the success stories and pictures on the boards, so I know that no matter your body type, you can get strong and lean. But of course, it takes some people longer than others. I think if this was explained a bit more in a newsletter, it would help people understand where they are and possibly give them ideas on how to improve their results (in a more realistic manner than overtraining with doubles or triples with Insanity, One on One, and P90X).

Maybe a three part newsletter that has good tips (and possibly recommended programs or recommended mix/matches between several programs, though that's probably asking for wayyy to much) for one somatotype each would be something we would all enjoy! emoticon I mean, if you guys really buy into that stuff.

I think there should be a topic on yoga. Not to sound harsh or anything, but it gets old seeing people on the boards whining about it and asking if they can substitute it for something else. I think it would be beneficial for people to read how it can help them.

Definitely how to cope with injuries and keep moving forward. I stretch as much as I can but still wind up tweaking things occasionally. I don't want to let a tweak in one body part affect the way I work the others.

1)

I'd love to hear Steve and rest of the BB staff's thoughts on "counting calories" vs. generally healthy living. All of the programs do a great job of helping us determine and outline our daily calories based on our individual needs, but I think some people (including myself) often get caught up in scrupulously counting calories to the point of maybe over-thinking it all; be it through constantly weighing everything we cook, detailed journals and logs, or fear of eating out). I'm sure BB would rather their customers develop and learn to live a generally wholistic and healthy lifestyle, rather than to turn into strict calorie counters. Perhaps I'm all alone on this one, but after doing P90X, P90X+, and now Insanity, I find that my mind has been conditioned to track everything that I eat (calorically speaking), and it often hinders other things in my life like going out and enjoying dinner with friends, etc. Essentially, I'd like to hear some of BB's thoughts on living a balanced yet disciplined lifestyle while doing and maintaining their programs. I've heard that Tony Horton doesn't count calories, so I'd be curious to know his approach to eating and living on a day-to-day basis. I, for one, have developed some mental fear of eating out (but not bad food), because I won't know how many calories I'm taking in! It's a mess! haha

2)

I too would like some insight into some of the various nutritional questions other have requested. I'd like to be able to figure out how much salt I should be taking in. Also, it would be nice to get some more information with regards to how many carbs I am able to store at a time before they are converted to fat. Are there any formulas out there that we can use based on our height, weight, etc. so that we can get a more accurate intake perspective on these nutrients?

Sorry if these are vague and confusing! It's not much clearer in my own head! ;)

I finally remember what I had in mind the other night.

I think people would definitely love to read about the dos and donts of "How to Bulk up" and what we should do to maintain it, because I see a question about gaining muscle mass at least once every 2-3 weeks.

A friend of mine is Diabetic and said he gets too exhausted when he works out and wonders how P90X would affect him. I would love an article on the effects of diabetes 1 and 2 on the body, the effects of exercise and what one would need to know to prepare themself for an extreme workout.

Sorry, I have not done my research to see what has been covered.

All the ideas so far ROCK

I would like to see ideas on time management and how to eat healthy on the cheap.
I write some tips out because I don't have a problem with these areas but know others do, so they make excuses - eating healthy is too expensive (I can feed you for $1.17 a plate with fish, peas and brown rice). I don't have time to cook (some recipes you can make 2 or 3 at a time and freeze items, etc)

I'd be happy to share what I have and you all can edit/chop/change emoticon
