HELP! Severe Food Allergies!
nutrition food allergies
11/15/09 1:53 PM
I am starting the P90-X program tomorrow with my fiance. He has no problems with food, but I have some major issues. In addition to being allergic to gluten, I also cannot have gluten-free foods such as oatmeal, corn, rice, etc. So, basically, I can eat fruit for carbs but I cannot eat any of the things listed in the "carbs" section of the nutrition plan. I also cannot drink the recovery drink, nor can I have any protein bars. My goal is really only to lose about 5 lbs and to generally tone up a bit. I am a gym rat currently, 5'10", 135 lbs and about 17% body fat, so I don't have much to lose. I do want to benefit from the program, however, and I don't want my workouts to suffer for lack of nutrients. Should I continue to eat as I normally do (all fruits, vegetables, and lean meats) and not worry about percentages so much, or should I try to follow the nutrition plan but cut out the protein bars, the recovery drink, and substitute fruit for any block of carbs?

Can you eat any gluten free subs such as the kind they sell at the store? Doing a program like p90x may not be a good idea if you can't have any carbs at all. And are you sure you are at 17%? That doesn't seem right.

Nope, I can't have any of the "gluten free" stuff - I have allergies to things aside from the gluten that prevents that. I can have it in very light doses (I can probably eat one serving of rice every other day or one serving of some gluten free bread every other day, but nothing close to what would be required of the program). The carbs I eat now are all in the form of fruit, which I know is pretty limited on the P90-X plan. My body fat is around 17-18% (I've worked out 6 days a week for over 14 years and had it tested at 24 hour fitness). I can either substitute fruit for all the carbs on the plan or maybe I should just workout with my fiance to give him support and eat how I normally eat and just use this as a hard workout plan, but not strive for the P90-X results per se? I'm open to thoughts and suggestions.

What about veggies? They don't seem to be part of the conversation here. You could do worse than having a diet in which you get your carbs from fruits and veggies, so if you want to use a combo of fruits and veggies, that would be fine.

What are you allergies, exactly? oatmeal, rice and corn is a pretty broad range. Is there a unifying factor?

For the bars, just use another double snack from the snack portion list.

For the recovery drink/snack, you need something that's 4-1 carbs-protein. How are you with milk? I'm not a fan of suggesting this, but low-fat chocolate milk nails this.

I'm fine with veggies. I'm not sure how to explain my allergies - basically, my body doesn't digest anything that takes an extra step to digest, so anything that has preservatives in it, I can't eat. Any seasonings that say "natural flavors", I can't eat since that can mean anything under the sun. Apparently, corn, oats, breads, and even any gluten free products are the same - they have things that take an extra step to digest. I can't have any sugars, real or artificial (only honey). I'm not really supposed to have milk - although I wonder how I would do on a glass of soymilk each day as a recovery drink...I have a feeling once in a while is okay but every day would get to me pretty quick. (Thank you in advance for the help!)

Is it that you can't break down complex sugars? Such as lactose in milk?

That's part of the problem, but it's not with only complex sugars, it's with complex anything that takes more than one step to digest.

Okay, I think I get your carb situation. Tell me the proteins you're okay with and I'll suggest a recovery snack from that.

Is there a name for your condition?

Go to Glutensmart.com they have nice list of gluten free foods and even gluten free low carb foods. I ordered an array of stuff last week and have enjoyed most of it. They have gluten free bars, waffle/pancake mix, also try Quinoa (sp) for your carb. It is like oatmeal and I had 1 tbsp of 0 calorie, 0 sugar, 0 carb chocolate and it is delish. I also bought mung bean pasta from an organic grocery store and it was good. I have been very experimental so if you want to ask any questions about some foods just contact me.

I'm okay with most proteins, just as long as they're not seasoned with stuff. I'm iffy on soy though. I've been drinking chocolate soymilk the past 2 days for a recovery drink and so far, it's working okay.

There is no name for the condition itself, but the book and website that describe it and what I'm allowed to eat are called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and it's a book called Ending the Vicious Cycle. Here is the main website... http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

I have a Whole Foods right by me, so I do have access to tons of gluten-free foods...and most of them taste awesome on top of it. My problem is that with my specific allergies, there are things in the gluten-free foods that I also cannot have. I can have some of it, but very little (one serving a day for a few days will get to me).

I know that diet. It's pretty different. I'm just glad they let you drink bourbon. emoticon

Try coconut water for a recovery drink -- which is different from coconut milk. It's right around 5-1 and 4-1 carbs-protein. The protein may not be complete, but you have a pretty special diet, so it'll work in a pinch.

Wow, never heard of it...I'll go find it. Is that better for me than the chocolate soymilk, which does seem to have the 4-1 ratio?

UPDATE: I found it at the store, but I don't see how it's a 4-1 or even 5-1 ratio...the label on the coconut water is 15 carbs to 1 protein. Am I missing something.

That's bizarre. I remember seeing it at a trade show and it having the right balance. To verify, I looked it up on Nutrition Data and it matched. Now I'm looking at specific brands and you seem to be right. There must be a lot of wiggle room in how coconut water is processed.

How about almond milk? Can you drink that?

I can, but that seems to be so much fattier than Soymilk. Is there a reason you don't like the soymilk idea?

Soy milk is fine from my perspective, but you said you were worried it might get to you, so I was trying to find you another option.

Ah, ok, I appreciate that. I don't think it is great for me, but it seems to be holding up so far - I guess the amount of it combined with the fact that there are a few days a week when I don't need to drink it (yoga, day off, maybe kenpo) makes it a small enough frequency that my stomach is doing alright. If it gets bad, then I'll try to switch to almond milk, as you suggested, and I'll just have to count it as my fat as well to make up for the extra fat that's in it. Thanks so much for all your help!
