How to maintain for a couple weeks?
Hello everyone,

So December 12 is my last day of round 1 of P90X Classic, and I want to take about 2 and a half weeks off before starting the program all over again. The plan is to start round 2 from the beginning of the year, after all the holiday chaos ends. Throughout my p90x journey, I lost weight and gained muscle, but have not fully reached my fitness goals yet, so I would not want to lose the hard work that I have put in.

Now I plan on just maintaining my results for the 2 and a half week break, before beginning round 2. I plan on still eating healthy (mostly like phase 3 of the nutrition guide), but I "hope" to be a bit flexible around Christmas dinner and the other celebrations. So how would I be able to take a break for a couple weeks, and eat a bit more flexible, while maintaining my results? Should I do couple of the dvds a week? Can I get by without doing any of the dvds? Can I just spend a couple hours at the gym each week to do a general workout? I don't want to start round 2 right after I finish round 1 as I want a bit of a break (especially with the holidays around the corner).

Thanks in advance!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You can do "light" cardio / aggressive walking / bicycle / Yoga, etc...during your 2 1/2 week break....nothing extreme.

Just try to eat as clean as you can (I know the holidays are coming). Be mindful of your portion sizes when eating food (like Thanksgiving dinner) that you may NOT have control of.

Enjoy your holiday emoticon

GO GET IT in round II!!!

Alright, so I decided how I am going to do this. I will be officially done with round 1 of P90X on December 13th, and I will be removing my wisdom teeth the following day.

So here is my plan for the gap between round 1 and round 2:
- Week of Dec 14-20: no workout at all, mainly so I can rest, and recover from the oral surgery
- Week of Dec 21-27: workout about 3 of the days (not sure which dvds I will be doing yet)
- Week of Dec 28-Jan 3: workout about 3 of the days (not sure which dvds I will be doing yet)

Then Jan 4 (which is a Monday), begin round 2!

What do you guys think of this? The whole purpose of the gap between round 1 and round 2 is to just relax a bit and enjoy a break, especially since its the holiday season.

Will I be able to maintain my results from round 1 with this plan? I plan to still eat healthy, but not be too obsessed with portions, as I have been for all of round 1.

Any advice is appreciated!

Like you, I am between rounds, finished round 1 Nov 12 and will be starting round 2 Dec 30. Tony has mentioned in other forums that working out only 3 days a week is a waste of time - supposedly it is better to workout for shorter, less intense periods for 6 days a week then a full workout only 3 days a week.

Keeping that in mind, this is what I have done - not saying this is the best plan, but seems to work for me.

1st week after P90x: repeat recovery week

For subsequent weeks, I've alternated resistance and cardio in a similar format to P90x but lesser intensity, and pick one of the workouts below based on how busy my schedule is that day.

Day 1: UML OR Core Syn OR Chest/Back (1st round only)
Day 2: CardioX OR Plyo (minus bonus round) OR 3 mile run
Day 3: Shoulders/arms OR Back/Biceps PLUS ARx
Day 4: Yoga
Day 5: Legs/Back/ARx OR UML OR 30-45 min of targeting areas I feel need work (mix of P90x moves)
Day 6: Kenpo OR Cardio intervals OR 3 mile run
Day 7: Rest OR XStretch

Overall intensity level about a 7 as compared to 9/10 for a real round of P90x.

Hope this helps you.

But how would that be lesser intensity? From what it looks to me, your pretty much following phase 1 classic of p90x. Am I understanding that correctly?

Not exactly.

The suggestion for maintenance is to do yoga once a week and one of the following once or twice a week: Plyo, core or Kenpo; to retain muscle mass do the first round of the resistance programs only.

The schedule I listed incorporates these suggestions, some less intense workouts like UML and cardioX. Also a 3 mile leisurely run is less intense than an hour of plyo - you can complete in 30 min at a 10 min/mile pace. I do arms once a week to not lose muscle mass in that region, but instead of trying to increase the resistance each time like I did in P90x I use the same resistance from where I left off. Abs should continue to be worked about 2x a week, whether it be ARx or some other means.

Actually this IS okay, since they recommend anywhere between 1-3 weeks break between rounds. So its fine. Try to get some cardio in there with your resistance days on your 3 day workout plan.

I took 1 week off after my first round of P90x Classic, then 2 weeks off after my second round of Classic, and now am doing the p90x Plus (classic) / P90x dvd mix routine (per the schedule) - finishing up the first month.

So its fine...just don't pig out on crap...be mindful of all your hard work emoticon

Congrats on your upcoming graduation of P90x emoticon

Good luck in your next round Jan 4th.

Losebutgain,

I agree with Karen. I think your plan looks good. Perhaps you could do the stretch video during your first week off. This being said, be REALLY careful doing any stretch that involves lowering your head, like hamstring stretches, after you get your wisdom teeth out. It could make your mouth hurt (read THROB!). You may have to skip some stretches, or do them lying down instead. This is just a suggestion to keep limber and keep moving. It might also take your mind off of the fact that you can't open your mouth much!

I finished round one in mid-November, and took about 2 or 2.5 weeks "off" before beginning round 2. During that time, I battled a nasty stomach bug, so that made workouts impossible for about 5 days. When I felt a little better, I did cardio X, kenpo X, plyo X (my personal favorite), and I also tried the two "bonus" workouts that come from P90 on the "how to bring it" DVD. They were less intense than the P90X workouts, but kept me moving. You could try those too, but again: be careful with the high impact stuff after surgery!

Oh... and be REALLY careful with your diet.

Best of luck with your teeth and with round 2,

Julie
