Citing the science for low carbs
Showing 15 results.
Can someone give me a link or book that describes the side affects of low carb diets? Every website seems to say something different, some say there are no side affects and some (like Bemoticon say they are hard on the kidneys, and some go so far as to say low carb diets cause loss in lean muscle mass and loss of any water retension.

It's on the FAQ Section, I don't have the link, sorry.
But I do know that the Low Carb Phase can get you tired, it's suppose to be as long as you feel you're ready to move on, it can stretch to as long as 6 weeks, MAX because the High protein can Hurt your organs, don't know which exactly, i'm guessing Liver, etc.
It's suppose to be low Carb to teach you that Carbs should not be all rejected in diets, and are very important.
Low Carbs can Cause "Bonking" When you're exercising.

ACTUALLY, can someone Answer what "bonking" Exactly is, I imagine it would be a very tired state.

I was actually hoping for some science behind it not just a general explanation.
Like a specific study.

Read the Atkins diet book, specifically the sections on Ketosis.

This "High protein can hurt your organs" argument is for the most part baloney. You just don't hear,.....
"How did he die?"
"To much protein. Chicken breasts, morning noon and night...... terrible."

The only high protein problem I've read about is people drinking way to many protein shakes and replacing regular meals with just shakes,.... leading to gall stones and gall bladder problems. It's like taking to much vitamin C. Ya gotta be stepping on the gas like you're a junkie.
If you eat whole foods for protein and a shake you will not suffer the horrors of the mythical protein toxicity.

okay i don't get it, why would a low carb diet book say a low carb diet is bad for you?
And i don't get it, so it is or isn't bad for you? It's only bad if you get too much vitamin C? huuhhhh?

You're getting confused and I don't know why?

You wanted a study about low carb diets and I gave you Atkins and the effects of Ketosis.
No one mentioned "a low carb diet book saying a low carb diet is bad for you."

My comments past the book study were in response to Steam who spoke about to much protein.
Sorry to confuse.

It is.
I thought you wanted the effects and side effects of a low carb diet explained? A lot of it is in there.

xP wait that's why I was confused, if atkins is a low carb diet wouldn't putting the side effects in a book be bad for marketing? That's why I was confused.
And is this up to date? Atkins diet came out when i was like 10.
btw thanks for responding, I don't want to make it sound like i'm arguing or anything, I just wanna make sure I get a book with the correct facts.

Z -

I know what you mean. You're looking for something more objective. If you look at the the Atkins and South Beach diets, you'll note that even they have you phase in carbs after the first phase.

Admittedly, the research behind low-carb diets is relatively new, so it flip-flops a little. Also, I tend to err on the side of caution here on the boards, so that's why you see my kidney rant so much.

Have you ever heard of pubmed.gov? It's a database for research. It's where you'll find all the studies people refer to on the boards and in articles. You ask a lot of questions and have a really great intellectual curiosity. I think you need to spend some serious time there looking this stuff up.

thank you i will def check it out, I always wondered where most of the studies came from, google isn't exactly the best source. emoticon
But can you please give me a more confusing database next time? This one is just too easy to understand.
(comical sarcasm)
Hehe thanks though.

Probablly an easier place to find your info is medlineplus.gov. You can find some things that are pretty basic. I'm a bio major and biochemistry is really the explanation for ketosis but I don't think you are looking for that in depth of an explanation as to how and why ketone bodies form. Just do a search at the medlineplus site for ketosis or low carb diets and you should find some good sites both for and against them.
