RE: Approve my P90X Phase 2 Diet?
I'm moving on phase 2 for p90x this Monday and was wondering if you could look over my diet and see if most looks good. Thanks. I'm in level 2 also.

Breakfast: 8-9 AM
Phase 2: 1 cup of Flavored Oatmeal (1 cup of skim milk), Egg whites

Snack 1: 10:30-11:30 AM
Phase 2: TLC Bar, String cheese

Lunch: 12:30-1:30 PM
Phase 2: Turkey Sandwich w/ whole wheat bread, Tomato Protein shake

Snack 2: 3:30-4:30 PM
Phase 2: Banana

Dinner: 6:30-7:30 PM
Phase 2: Grilled chicken, Rice (Brown or wild) Steamed Veggies, Protein shake

Some quick questions. Does flavored Oatmeal really make a big difference over regular oatmeal? With the eggs, turkey, and chicken as my 3 portions, can my protein shake account for my other 3 I can take? it's 60g per serving.

What is the calorie total for this menu?

What is the totals for the protein, carb, fat? Is it hitting the phase II 40-40-20?

You're eating at level 2? This looks a little "thin"....doesn't look like much food.

Okay I just totaled everything up and this is what i got. And I'm not sure how to figure out that 40 40 20 thing. I know it's the percents, but don't know if this is okay.

Shadow,

My calculations show that, based on the numbers in your last post, your diet is approximately 51% carb, 32% protein, and 17% fat. Based on the 40 - 40 - 20 model, you are a little high on the carbs and a little shy on the protein. You're pretty close on the fat.

Quaker makes a reduced-sugar oatmeal (I like the apple cinnamon flavor) that you could try as a way to reduce the carb content there. If you cannot find this, you will find a large caloric difference between plain and flavored oatmeal. You could try buying plain oatmeal, and just adding cinnamon to it. I'm pretty sure cinnamon doesn't have any caloric content.

Another observation: About half of the protein your are consuming is in the form of a protein shake. You may be better off trying to get more of your proteins from lean cuts of chicken or turkey, and less from shakes. Just a thought...

Best of luck,

Julie

Thanks a lot for your input. I was wondering if you had time, if these new totals equaled out better. I cut out unnecessary carbs and lowered to 1/2 serving of protein in order to add in a turkey burger.

New totals: 173 grams of protein, 161 grams of carbs, 1800 calories, 466 fat calories. Thanks a lot

No problem. Your new numbers:
Carbs: 39%
Protein: 36%
Fat: 25%

FYI: Here's how I'm coming up with your numbers...

Take the number of carb grams and multiply by 4 (4 calories per gram of carbs), then divide this number by 1800 to get your percentage of carbs.
Take the number of grams of protein and multiply by 4 (4 caloires per gram of protein), then divide this number by 1800 to get your percentage of protein.
You gave me the fat numbers in calories already, not in grams, so simply divide the fat calories by 1800 to get your percentage of fat. (If you had given me fat grams, I would have multiplied by 9 first, because there are 9 calories per gram of fat.)
The numbers do not come out to an exact 100% total because they are approximations, but they're really close.

Looks like you're pretty close to the 40-40-20 ratio you're looking for. Keep the cuts of meat lean (like turkey and chicken) and you're there! Also, if you're buying premade turkey burgers, be careful. I read a lot of labels before I decided they contained more fat than I really wanted. I buy 99% fat free ground turkey and make my own. (Perhaps you are doing the same.)

Good luck,

Julie
