Things you wish you had done . . . .
Showing 17 results.
Okay, this question is directed to all the adults on bb. I am 18 and would love to know the things you wish you had done in your teens/twenties that you didnt do, or the things you you did, but you regret it.

This question is regarding fitness and nutrion, not personal stuff emoticon

Thanks alot ... i would really appreciate all the help

I wish I would have started exercising regularly sooner...I was a couch potato until I was 23. And I wish I NEVER would have gone on ANY diet. I dieted myself up to almost 200 pounds at one point. I really screwed up my metabolism and am just now (at 38) getting it to regulate itself.

I also wish I would have started more intense exercises sooner (both strength and cardio). Back when I first started, it was all about working out for long periods in your "aerobic" zone to burn fat, which was not doing my metabolism any favors. I really need to push myself hard to see results and to feel my best.

Yoga. None of the chronic injuries I have would be here had I taken a more balanced approach to exercise as a youth.

I probably wouldn't have pushed myself so hard while I was in my dance training. Because of dancing so much (about 70 hours a week while in college), I have bunions (gross, I know), tendinitis in my left Achilles, a touch of chronic bursitis in my right hip, and I'm usually sore pretty much all over my body all the time.

The bunion problem SHOULD have never been an issue. When I started dancing en pointe (on your toes), my teacher never told me I needed toe spacers. I have a bit of a gap between my big toe and my other toes. They make gel cushions for in between the toes so there isn't any added pressure where it doesn't need to be. The tendinitis was also because of pointe. It puts a lot of pressure on the Achilles.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change it for the world and I absolutely live and love dance, but some of these problems can be a little irritating!

I wish I would have played HS football! I think I missed my calling. emoticon

It's strange to say, but I'm actually glad I let me weight get out of control like it did. I was physically miserable and have since proven to myself that I am capable of much more than I give myself credit for by radically changing the way I look. It's very empowering. Of course I wouldn't recommend getting fat just for the sake of being able to make a bigger change. emoticon

kiera, thanks for that tip of never going on any diet

bb advice man, is yoga really that good that you regret not doing it. DAMN!! I replaced all but one of my yoga days with either x stretch or rest. cant believe it! today i promise that from now on i will do yoga. btw, is there any program which has a little less intense yoga for beginners.

primaballerina, dancing is tuough, thank god i am not into it, the reason why i say this is because, i saw this documentary (on either nat geo or discovery science), that dancers, specially ballet dancers have to go through a lot of pain to do what they do specially the part where they dance on their toes, what you referred to as en pointe. before wtching that documentary i thought that ballet was really easy since it is done mostly by girls.

bazooka, nice T . . . btw where are your glasses

Ballet is NOT easy at all! We actually take that as a compliment because if you make it look easy, you're doing your job! Male dancers, especially male ballet dancers, are the strongest guys that I know! I read somewhere that in a list of sports that are the hardest on the body, professional football was number, and being a professional ballet dancer was number 2. We beat out hockey, rugby, and everything else! I also read that being en pointe can put up to 300 lbs of pressure ON YOUR TOES.

You might want to try Fountain of Youth yoga. It's another one by Tony, but it's only 30 minutes. Yoga Booty Ballet makes a gentle one too. Yoga IS very good for your body! I'm glad you changed your mind and will keep up with it!

Sure. Pure and Simple Yoga from the Yoga Booty Ballet series is a great, mellow yoga workout.

Tony also has a couple in One-on-One. There's Patience, which is easier than P90x yoga and there's Fountain of Youth, which is P90x yoga, but cut to 45 minutes.

I'll tell you something very important that I wish someone had told me. Take care of your body. Be smart when exercising and doing anything. I'm only 29 now but I have knee and wrist problems and even jaw problems from an impact I took playing sports when I was younger. You feel invincible now but in about 8 years or so all these things will start to show up. So take care of yourself!

The documentary I was talking about, said that it puts the pressure equal to 3 elephants standing on top of each other, but I guess that was exaggeration.

I have 12 workouts of the one on one series and only one of them is yoga, which is fountain of youth yoga but there is no patience yoga. is it in vol 2?

albert, what you say is so right, i do think i am invincible at times, for example if i have pain in any part of my body i do nothing about unless it stays longer than three days. from now on i promise to change that attitude. my parents have been telling me the same thing for years, but for some reason (i dont know why) it makes more sense to me now that i heard it from someone i dont know. thanx man, i owe you one.

Love you all

No problem man. That's what we do growing up is ignore our parents so that makes sense. I'll give you another example. In highschool I ran track and cross country and would sometimes get a little pain in my knees, especially in cross country but I would man-up through it. Now I have pain in my knees, especially my left one and need to wear a brace to get through some of the more jump happy workouts. Always listen to your body and forget what everyone else tells you. Let them call you whatever, when you get my age you'll be running circles around all the people that didn't listen to their bodies and now can't do everything they want.

I think I saw the same documentary you did. It was a series on the nervous system, I think. This one had to deal with strength or something. I think what they said was 300 lbs, which is the weight of a baby elephant. You were close! emoticon

I wish I would have been introduced to Yoga years ago. My first experience with yoga was during P90X and at first I hated it because it was so difficult. Since then, I've grown to absolutely love it. The gains in strength and flexibility have been amazing. The calmness of mind and body during extreme physical stress I can now achieve is crazy great. I just ordered two yoga dvds from Tony's One on One program.

have made several posts on here about recovering from anorexia. Well the truth is my problem isn't so much anorexia as it is obsessive exercising. I started doing p90x and using it's philosiphies along with trying to gain size in the gym I have done worse than spin my wheels. I weight less than I did when I started in September and I even look worse(less defined although it is still somewhat there) and it has taken me 4 months to be honest with myself. Every day that I worked out until 2 weeks ago I was just mentally and physically drained no matter how much I ate to compensate. I say every day that I worked out but I haven't, until 2 weeks ago, taken a day off at all in almost a year. At one point I was eating 3500-4000 calories a day trying to bulk with p90x cardio on off days and SS for workouts, sometimes even doing cardio in the morning before weights, was still LOSING weight, decreasing in performance and making no progress at all. This was at bodyweight 142 lbs or so, 6 foot tall and 26 year olds and sedentary besides my workouts. You can say it was inadequate diet I suppose but I simply could not afford more than that....

Now again, this is my own idiocy, but it is easy to get caught up in. How much sense does it really make to someone who has been fat their whole life from inactivity that the problem is they are overdoing it? So I began to push myself EVEN HARDER. This has resulted in me gaining bodyfat percentage(from muscle loss...I still do not have enough total bodyfat to register on the machine that my doctor uses to test), having less cardio capacity and equal if not a little worse strength.

The point I am trying to make here is this....if you think you are overtraining and lack motivation to do ANYTHING.....you are. If you dread your workouts(as I did until a few weeks ago) YOU ARE OVERTRAINING. IMMEDIATELY DECREASE YOUR VOLUME. Also I was experiencing extreme anxiety and insomnia in mid afternoons....I basically had every sign of overtraining except getting sick which I rationalized with well since I havent been sick in awhile I must not be overtraining. Take a few days to simply do some dynamic stretching. Let your energy levels go back to normal and once they do do not overdo it again. Just my advice and I hope it helps even one person avoid the mistakes I have made. Good luck to all and have a wonderful day.

Sorry for the wall of text but this was an extremely similar post on another forum I frequent and that was my response....if you have the time read it. It is pathetic I know but I hope it will help even one person as I state. Regards
