Round 3 results - Need help reaching goal
I am about to enter my recover week for my third round of P90x. I am 44 years old and had a very simple goal when starting P90x....get to my six pack. I am 5'11" and now 189 pounds (started at 196) nine months ago. I have put on significant muscle mass, and achieved great results for most of body, except where I really wanted it....my abs. I still have a small layer of body fat in my mid section that is preventing me from reaching my final goal. I have started mixing ab work on P90x+ and Ab ripper, but it's not that the muscle isn't developed, it's just the layer preventing it to be seen. I am fairly religious on the diet plan, have low sugar, low fat diet, running betweeen, 2300-3000 calories per day. In this final round, I have added 30 minutes of ellipital work 3-4 times a week for additions calorie/fat burn. It has help a little, but not as much as I would have liked. Has anyone experienced this, and what have you done to overcome it? I thought cortisol levels might be high, so I recently purchased 5-htp 200mg time release. I do have trouble sleeping through the night, and get 6-7 hours of sleeep. the other reason I did this is because of my stressful job. Am I on the right track? Any suggestions? I bought P90x+ and will be starting it in a couple of weeks, hoping it mixes up my body a bit.
Please help!
Thanks,
Bill

Bill -

Great work! What's going on with you is super common. At this point, you've got a crazy metabolism, so you can burn a lot more than 3000 calories, so you're probably in starvation mode and your body is holding onto emergency fat. I think that if you go up to 3500 calories, you'll like what happens.

Here's an FAQ that goes into a little more detail.

So, I should be in the Endurance maximizer diet from what I am hearing.. I have still been on a higher protein diet to help get this fat off. I tend to drink 1-3 protein shakes a day (120+- grams of protein) If I uptick my calories, I should be balancing out good quality carbs, and good fat, correct? Also, what can I expect to see as I do this? Will I gain weight before I lose it and body fat again? What should I be watching out for?
Thanks agian for the help

High protein diets are fine for what they are, but they're designed assuming your body will burn it's own fat for fuel and when you're as low are you are, your body is going to fight that.

I think you're much better off with a diet that leans towards carbs so you have the energy to push your workouts hard and your body exists in a more comfortable state, so it'll be inclined to shed the fat.

So, short answer, yes, more carbs.
