Am i going to fast????
Am i going to fast????

I started going to the gym with a friend of mine about 3 weeks ago. He has told me i need to slow my reps down to get a better workout. I am doing 3 sets of 12 reps and, i feel i just go at a smooth and steady pace. I care more about loosing pounds then gaining alot of muscle or strenght. Does speed really matter?

It is possible to go too fast, and going slow does have benefits; as it keeps your muscle "active" constantly throughout the movement. But if you feel like you're at a smooth, steady pace (with good form!), then you're probably fine. What I encourage people to focus on even more is negative resistance.. like when you do a curl, to not just let the weight drop back down, but to resist it the whole way down. Gives you a boost to your workout; even though you're not really adding anything ;-)

Yes you can be going too fast
If that's the case you are putting youself in danger for an injury that's going to sideline you
a good rule of thumb is 1-2-3
where your active phase ... lifting or pulling is a SLOW 1.....2
and the passive phase where you are letting going is the ..... 3
also you should be going through the full range of motion for that given joint
if you are stopping in the middle for time you are going way too fast
