low fat low carb diet= lower sex drive?
Showing 18 results.
hi,

i'm a 23-year old female with a question about sex drive or libido. i have a boyfriend of more than a year, and i have never had an issue with my sex drive before. i've always been in good shape, but my eating habits were pretty horrendous-high in fat, high carbs, high in whatever i could get my hands on. i worked out pretty regularly, mostly playing soccer, climbing, running, mostly cardio, no serious weightlifting. i had a high sex drive with no complaints. pretty much as soon as i started p90x (i'm week 4 of phase 3. almost done!), i noticed that my sex drive was almost nonexistent. i am definitely more tired at night, but i am just not interested at all at any time. could this be a result of the strict diet? or the increased weightlifting? i'm wondering if the diet and exercise is messing with my hormones. i really feel like this is going to be a lifestyle change for me, but i don't want to sacrifice my formerly active sex life for the rest of my life!

This is one change I'm confused about because I feel like I've always heard that when you start eating better and exercising more regularly, you feel more energized and your sex drive increases. I do feel like I have more energy during the day, but no sex drive.

Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas or suggestions? I'm getting pretty desperate...

Thanks!

Hey there - I'm a 27 year old male, and the same thing has happened to me. I too have wondered if it's because of the diet and exercise change, because they coincided! Hopefully someone can chime in with some input or advice...I'm sure my girlfriend would appreciate it! ;)

Thought I would chime in and say that I also have this same problem. I am 25 years old(male). I have experienced a total lack of sex drive ever since I started the diet/exercise change.

Low sex drive is a pretty common symptom of low carb diets, but aren't you eating on phase three by now?

i am on phase 3, but i have a higher body fat percentage, so i am alternating between doing phase 2 diet and phase 3. pretty much on an every other day basis. if i got more carbs on a regular basis, would it help to increase my sex drive? i want to lose more body fat but i don't want to sacrifice my sex drive. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

It's not the lower carbs that will lower your body fat. It's the calorie deficit and the hard work.

I don't know if more carbs will rev you up, but it's the first thing I'd try.

Also, how much sleep are you getting?

Do you all feel exhausted otherwise, or is it literally just the sex drive? I'm curious.

i'm getting a minimum of 8 hours a sleep, sometimes more, but never less than 7 hours. i feel pretty energized most of the time though. i will try to add some more carbs to my diet, maybe move up to 3.5-4 servings a day. (i'm a level 1 nutrition, but my target calories is about 2200). i feel tired enough to get quality sleep, and i wake up feeling rested, so i don't think that's it. i was nervous to add more carbs because i was afraid of not burning the fat, despite what the nutrition guide says about not being afraid of that very thing! thanks again!

Well after getting some blood tests back, I found out I have pretty low testosterone - hence my reason for a low libido.

My question to bbstaff is:

Are there any natural or over-the-counter supplements that can substantially boost my testosterone level? My diet is 99.9% clean, I eat an array of fruits and veggies, I sleep 7-8 every night, I work out HARD everyday (I'm trying to gain muscle mass, so this is low testosterone level is NOT helping!), and I'm also a vegetarian (eating a lot of nuts, legumes, whey, and cottage cheese for my main sources of protein). I'm 5'4", 120lbs., and I eat 2800-3000 calories per day. Any help?!? Please?

I don't know of any sups that I actually believe in, but I do know that the zinc in meat increases testosterone, which might be the reason your levels are low.

You can try a zinc sup or make sure to eat lots of beans, which are loaded with zinc.

I agree, a well known supplement (usually advertised for rest & recovery as well as increased testosterone) is ZMA (zinc and magnesium basically). Usually taken at night, helps recovery and increases testosterone, though I have no personal experience of using this supplement. Zinc sounds like the logical choice to me too.

You probably need to go in for a general chem blood test. My guess is that if this happened with "eatting right" that you're probably deficient in something. Are you still having your period? You also might try eatting a steak or something, because anemia can cause low libido as well as B vit deficiencies and most of the time, when women are eeatting well and menstrating, they cut red meat . ..

Another thing I'll bring up is that it may be mental. You might just be THINKING about working out and food all day and you don't have time to think about sex like you used to. . .It might just be that you've got other stuff on your mind. Stress (like from adding to your schedule) can have that effect . . .

It is my understanding thata estrogen is stored in body fat for women. I may be wrong but it makes sense.

I don't think estrogen is a big predictor of sex drive . .. it's more related to sexual satisfaction (bloodflow, lubrication, sensation, etc) drive is more progesterone/testosterone . . .and there's quite a few guys on here with the same issue. ..But yeah, the first thing I'd look at is your periods, if you're fluxing, then there's likely something hormonal, if not, then I'd look at vitamin issues

Hey everybody. I'm only on week two of the "X" and so far my sex drive has been about like normal- or maybe slightly stronger than normal because I feel better (more energy, less fatigued). I'm not really following the eating plan in the guide- just using good common sense (lean meats, lots of fruits and veggies, legumes, very little "junk"). I'm also taking a daily multi vit and some omega 3 fish oil capsules. Overall I feel really good. So my suggestion would be take a multi vit and relax just a little bit on the diet. You'll really only learn what works for you by trial and error. Good luck everybody. :-)
