Hi Coaches

I have a question. I am on Day 8 of P90X & love it so far. On my rest day I did the X-stretch & was wondering how many times a week I could do this in addition to the regular workouts. I usually do the normal workouts early evening. Is there any downside to doing x-stretch in the morning? I like the strethcing but don't want to over do it.

Thanks

X-Stretch in the morning

Did you mean doing X-Stretch in the morning just on your rest day? If that is the question, that's fine as long as you are suitably warmed up. Since every workout begins with a warm up and a stretch, you probably don't need additional stretching on the same days as your regular workouts.

If you love to stretch, you can do it daily. I practice yoga daily! Beachbody has several shorter daily DVD's that would work well as a second activity each day. Tony Horton's One-on-One-Fountain of Youth Yoga is only about 40 minutes long. There are also several Yoga Booty Ballet workouts that might fit your needs!

Thank you. I was referring to daily maybe every other day stretching routine. I sit in front of a computer most of the day so a morning stretch helps.

I feel your pain, I'm a software developer, and sit in front of the computer all day too.

If you're doing your normal workout in the evening, and you have the time, doing X-Stretch in the morning won't hurt anything. It would probably do you body good, get it prepped for the day of sitting.

The best advice, listen to your body. If you feel like you're overdoing it, cut back to just your scheduled routine.

12/19/09 9:13 AM as a reply to TeamHowtobefit.
WOWY is social networking for fitness. Like Facebook, you log in and let people know what you are doing. Unlike Facebook, you are telling people what workout you are doing today to improve your health and fitness and to help achieve the ideal weight that is best for you. You can say "Hi" to your workout buddies, support them as they work to achieve their goals or lament the fact that they missed a workout and let you and themselves down.

Our team members all work out 6 - 7 days a week, so you will always find one of us in WOWY. Since we cross the country, live in different time zones and work out at different times of the day, you are almost certain to find one of us working out when you are or close to when you are.

To connect with us, simply click on one of our profiles at http://www.howtobefit.com/team-howtobefit.htm and then send us a workout invitation. If you don't know how to do that, send us an email and we will help you do it.

We can't wait to have more workout buddies because together we are better!

My question is....on the chair assisted pull ups. I am an older female and although more fit than most, I've never done a pull up in my life....LOL
When I have the chair close, I use my leg too much, but the further away I push the chair, the more horizontal and swung under the bar my body position becomes....and that is not the position an unassisted pull up is done...just seems like I'm defeating the purpose or something.....????
Thanks

Shaba,

The purpose behind the chair is to make your body weigh less so that you can do the full range of motion on the pull ups. If you position the chair so that your heel is on it instead of the bottom of your foot, using your leg to push yourself up won't be an option, but you will still be able to pull yourself up to the bar.

Even if you can't pull yourself all the way up at first, it is more important to keep the proper angle during whatever range of motion you have rather than using your leg muscles instead of your back and shoulders muscles to pull yourself up.

Try it a few times with the heel of your foot on the chair and let me know what you think!

Feel free to contact me directly anytime.

I am just looking for different opinions. I seem to have hyper-extended both my knees/lower legs during Kenpo last week. They have been hurting really bad since despite a lot of icing and Aleve. I have had to modify some workouts and I really don't want to take a day off. I'm supposed to do Yoga, back and legs, and Kenpo this week still and I'm looking for some advice. Should I try to do modification or should I just rest up?

Hi, as a fitness instructor my advice would be to RICE rest, ice, compress and elevate (if you can). If its been a while and you are still in a lot of pain, you may want to get checked out by your doctor. I tend to be more cautious.

Once you are feeling better, you may want to modify your workouts and make sure you are using proper form (not locking joints out, esp during Kenpo). I would avoid the Kenpo workout until you feel a better. Maybe substitute it with another cardio exercise like walking.

I'm sure the other coaches will chime in with their opinions tooemoticon

First, don't hyper-extend. I think they even mention that during the routine. I have a sore shoulder, and did Kenpo X this morning, had to be sure not to overdue it.

With that said, listen to your body, not your mind! If you feel like you can do the workouts with modification, go for it. Don't talk yourself out of the workout because it's uncomfortable. At the same time, don't push through real pain, allow your body to heal itself.

On my first round of P90X, I pushed through a strained back muscle, instead of taking a few days off. I made it worse, ended up having to sit out for over a week!

Don't worry about falling a few days or week behind. It's not a race to day 90, and it's not over then, it's a lifetime journey. You want to enjoy the workouts, and get the most out of them.

Feel free to contact me directly with any questions.
