Can I take Shakeology while pregnant?
shakeology and pregnancy
1/25/10 12:07 PM
I know this question has been asked before, but I wanted to know from the experts. I have talked to my doctor. I showed him the packet with ingredients and he said it should be fine as long as it has enough folate. I know he didn't thoroughly inspect it. He just glanced over it. I'm sure he passed it off as "another" one of those "health drinks" Is there anything in it that I should be concerned about, or possibly point out to my doctor? Something that he possibly overlooked? I would love to take it all throughout pregnancy, but I just want to be sure it's as safe as He thinks it isemoticon And for the record...I know it's NOT just "Another one of those health drinks."

Thank youemoticon This will be #4 for me...I know it's nuts, but I figure get them here while you're young because that's when you have the energy...at least that's the way I feel. To each their own of course;)

I worked out through my entire pregnancy with #3 and he is the most mellow kid. So I'm hoping there is a direct correlation. I plan on doing the same with this one so I'm crossing my fingers. Anyway 2 kids was harder than 3 for me. People usually feel the opposite, but 3 was a cake walk compared to 2. I hope the same for you. Thanks again, and hopefully SOMEONE can answer this question...

No. no. no. no. You're getting a MASSIVE amount of nutrients with Shakeology and you have no idea how a little body will take to that.

As a general rule, unless told to do so by your doctor, avoid all sups while pregnant or nursing.

Okay I will definitely avoid Shakeology while pregnantemoticon I have stayed away from it since I found out, just in case. That's why I don't always trust doctor's. Most of the time I feel like a number, as if they have something better to do than genuinely answer my questions. Even when he said I should be fine I still felt uneasy about it. I'm glad I second guessed him. It just goes to show we should ALWAYS be proactive with our health (and the health of our children). Thank you!

i am only 2 months pregnant. I spoke to my Beachbody coach who is Jenelle, Chalene's sister and she knows a few pregnant woman who are still taking it. SHe said they have taken it to the doctor and its okay. As long as you are mixing other ingredients into it not just the powder and milk/juice whatever. You should be adding a banana, blueberries, peanut butter, bran buds, you name it just so you are giving the baby more nutrients.

For the record, I strongly disagree. But if drinking Shakeology is that important to you and you're willing to take the risk, good luck.

Thank you, I just did IVF & am going in for my pregnancy test thursday....I asked the doctor & she didn't look at the package, just said no....so I was waiting to ask my other doctor. I've been off it since so I'll just stick with that. Thanks for the info......I'll miss my Shakeology, but better safe than sorry with this precious little gift.

I totally agree. I also feel like I pee a lot more when I drink it and have more energy. There is something in it that is helping me lose weight. I wouldn't drink it while pregnant.

I can understand the potency of Shakeology not being the best thing while pregnant. Can u elaborate as to why not to use it during pregnancy? I teach natural family planning and I work with a lot of couples aspiring to achieve pregnancy. I also promote Shakeology to couples as a supplement to support their fertility. What reasons do I give them when I tell them to stop drinking Shakeology while pregnant? I had a doctor once tell me not to take organic pre-natals because of some of the enzymes in them. I'm trying to make sense of it all. Thanks!

Denis, I agree with your caution--with one disagreement.

I have looked at the ingredients sent to me and there are fewer nutrients than in a prenatal vitamin, except vitamin A.

Vitamin A, especially artificial vitamin A, is known to cause birth defects. Most prenatals give you 0 - 25% of this easily absorbed, common vitamin for this reason. But the shakeology amount is 100%. Don't drink it.

Worse-the problem is more with the herbal supplements--gingko, suma, MSM, rose hips etc.--which are not regulated by the FDA. That's why there's no established daily allowance, hence the cross in the %RDA box.

Check this site, which discusses herbal teas, out:

http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/herbaltea.html

Rose hips, for the record, are NOT established as safe. Now, I personally think that the site above errs on the side of caution. I would probably have a sip or two of rose hip tea, or nettle tea, if I prepared it myself (and in fact did drink a small amount of nettle tea while pregnant with each of my children). But I know how strong it is and how much is in it because I prepared it. The shakeology drink doesn't give you exact proportions, or tell you how concentrated each gram is.

So I wouldn't do it. You can get all those vitamins from a prenatal, and all the probiotics from a berry-yoghurt-banana shake. It's convenient but not irreplaceable.

Okay.

Here is the thing. All of these vitamins and enzymes are found in food. I'm a big, big proponent of organics, and herbal teas when prepared at home, in moderation, after consultation with a doctor or nurse that knows what she's talking about.

The reason they are bad when pregnant is the same reason they are risky when not:

1. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Not tested, no drug trials, nothing. (A law was recently passed to end this, thank heavens.) Foods are regulated, drugs are regulated, but not herbal supplements. So you just don't KNOW.

2. The way these enzymes are prepared for supplements is different than how they come into your body via foods. So they might work way more strongly. Again, we just don't know. You can get all these enzymes by eating fresh fruits and vegetables and whole dairy and lean meats and nuts, so why take the risk of processed foods? The vitamin A danger is related to supplements, not to vitamin A found in foods. That just gives you an idea of how supplements can be different.

3. Where are they getting the ingredients, how are they sourced, and how are they processed? Acai berries sound awesome until you imagine them being picked by people without access to clean water, after being sprayed with pesticides. I am not saying that's how it happens, but it's possible. Again, unless you are buying WHOLE, organic, possibly even fair-trade berries, you just don't know. And the benefit is not proven in large-scale clinical trials. So it's not worth the risk. Take a whole, organic pomegranate over acai powder any day of the week!

I have two kids, and the advice I got from my midwife (licensed nurse midwife) was a prenatal vitamin and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, no herbal tea unless proven safe in clinical trials, no alcohol, and no caffeine. She said that caffeine and alcohol consumed lightly were proven not to have a negative effect but why take the risk?

It's just not worth it. My own pregnancy shakes, made 100% of whole foods:

"milkshake" 1 c yoghurt, 1 c frozen berries, 1 banana (ripe), 1 tbsp ground flaxseed

"green smoothie" any leftover spinach, or frozen spinach; one banana; leftover peeled fruits; 1 tsp spirulina; 1 c. berries

It is stressful enough being pregnant but just remember, fresh whole foods, ideally organic, will almost never fail you. Good luck.

Midwives are generally more trained in nutrition for pregnancy than OBs are. If you're concerned, find a good midwife and take a pack to her, and see what she says. I would think that Shakeology plus a prenatal vitamin would probably be some serious overkill. Perhaps Shakeology and a folic acid pill, BUT... usually by the time you find out your pregnant, or directly after (like 2-3 weeks), the window of opportunity for the benefits of folic acid are gone, anyway. Unless you were taking it prior to being pregnant, it won't really matter. If you're interested in herbal teas, ect., as well, a midwife would be able to help you there, as well. Most are very well trained in nutrition and supplements, because their clients do tend to take more responsibility for their own health, and are more likely to be taking healthy drinks, supplements, and the like.

emoticon Thanks. One thing I forgot to mention was that I'm not opposed to Shakeology for adults. Obviously it's doing a lot of people a lot of good. It's a convenience food and some people really need that. When pregnant, it's just not a luxury we can afford.

Also my pediatrician approved it for my daughter saying it's fine for her to drink just not to use as a meal replacement and she was barely 3 when i asked him. He said he saw no reason for it to be a problem for anyone of any age to take in moderation
