Frustrated college student

(sorry if this is long)

I'm brand new to P90X. I'm a college student, so I don't have much money in the bank at all, so a friend of mine bought the program and is letting me workout with him and another buddy of ours (I am a female). However, they started without me, and that really frustrated me. So I'm already three days behind--I started on the yoga day. Today, we were supposed to workout, but one of our buddies went home for the weekend, so we have to wait and do it tomorrow. It's frustrating that I can't stay dedicated to the program because I have to share it with two other people.

Another frustration is that I feel like I can't keep up. I know that you're only supposed to do as much as you can, but with the yoga, I can't tell what the hell is going on half the time. It's quite discouraging.

Yesterday when we did legs and back, I felt like my pull-ups were soo lame. I had to use a chair, and I felt like I put just about all my weight on it. I'm only 5'2 and 105lbs, and one of the people I'm doing it with is a marine. I get very discouraged doing these workouts beside him.

My very last frustration is the meal plan. I cannot afford to eat the food that is recommended. I have a meal plan card, so I'm very limited as to what I can eat. The cafeteria does not offer anything healthy. I feel like I'm just not going to get as much out of this as I want. Am I alone here?

Sorry for the rant, I just needed to get that out of my system.

Are there any other college students with the meal plan problem?

Little tips:

Turn sideways so you can see the TV when doing Yoga, until you understand the "names" of the moves...they are going to be hard...that's normal.

Keep using the chair for your pullups...tons of us do this...each week try to put a little lighter touch on the chair with your foot, so you are using more of your body.

Meals: Try doing the "portion approach" where you have to hit the totals for each category...ex: 7 proteins, 4 carbs, 2 condiments, 2 snacks, 2 fat....

Then you just pick something from those list for each category...Ex: 3 oz of chicken breast would be 1 protein (for the day)....now you have to eat 6 more protein servings...(again picking items from the list under proteins)...then the same with the other categories (carbs, snacks, fats, etc.)

You buy what you can afford under the list...

To figure out how many of each category you should be eating ...do the formula in the beginning of the nutrition guide for your caloric needs...(to figure out WHAT LEVEL you should be eating at)

I feel your pain! I am starting hip hop abs but finding it so hard to lose because of the meal plan I am on and the food here is far less then healthy! I would love to stay on this thread and maybe we can work together! I am sophomore in college at Bethel University and working hard to lose some weight.

Hi Lindsay, thanks for your reply. It's soo good to know that I'm not the only one. At this very moment, I'm hungry and trying to decide what to eat. So far today, I've had a power bar and some tuna. I bought them both on campus. I went to Walmart the other day about bought a few things, mainly a bag of frozen precooked grilled chicken breasts. I got the Great Value brand, so it was like $6 or $7, and I think there are 8 in a bag. They don't taste great, but they're healthier than anything else I can find on campus. It also doesn't help that I'm Catholic and can't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. That brings me to the predicament I'm in right now...I'm hungry, and I worked out really hard today doing legs and back, so I know I've got to put away more calories, I just don't know what to get!

Hey, I completely feel you. My best friend is a personal trainer and he knows how badly I've been trying to get in shape so he bought insanity for me. (what a sweetie) But I hear you, it's definitely tough trying to lose weight on the meal plans here at school. I'd love to be motivational buddies, I could use it. Last night I took my before pictures, and all I have to say is WOW. I didn't realize how much weight I had to lose. It's discouraging just like you said, but I think if we surround ourself with people who feel the same way and motivate each other, it can only help right?

Hey,

Maybe you could ask your workout buddies if you could do the workout on your own for the days where you all can't do it together. It's hard trying to coordinate everyone schedules so that you guys have a common time to workout but it's also hard if you are motivated and dedicated to sticking to your workout routine and can't at the cost of others. I think that your buds will understand and will have no problem having you do the workout on your own on the days where scheduling is a problem.

Keep up the GOOD WORK with the workouts! Everyone's capabilities are different so it's expected that you make modifications to the things that you can't yet do. As you get stronger, you will notice that you no longer need to modify. Also, think of your marine friend as your competitor. This will PUSH you to DO MORE and believe that you are also capable of doing what he's doing (and YOU ARE!).

Eating healthy on a budget & while in college is difficult but it is possible. At the cafe, look for sandwiches, fruits, and salads. Definately stay away from all the fried foods. If possible, try buying food in bulk at the grocery store (it comes out cheaper). You may also want to get together with your buddies and split the cost of everything since you guys are on this journey together.

Keep your HEAD UP and keep striving towards your GOALS!

Hey,

I can definitely understand your frustration! I'd be upset, if I had to put my results on hold for some other people, too! You know there are 2 ways to get the P90X system at a discount, right? Up to 25% off! Let me know if you're interested.

As for the discouragement, you're trying to do the workouts like the guys are, which will automatically put you at a disadvantage. There's a lean program that most girls like to follow, but that's very difficult for you since you have 2 guys as workout buddies. The meal plan through your college should have some salads, but aside from that, just try to make whatever you're eating as healthy as you can: Instead of regular white bread, get wheat, instead of a greasy burger and fries, get a salad and put some meat on top. Whatever tastes good, just try to make it better for you by substituting some healthier aspects.

Hope I was helpful,
-Davis

Thank y'all all SO much for the feedback. It feels so much better to know that I'm not alone. I really appreciate all of you for taking the time to read and post.

I thought I'd come and give an update. The guys quit on me. I guess they just couldn't bring it ;) haha anyway, I went home for our quarter break, I shopped around on ebay, and I got myself the full P90X package unopened for 50 bucks with free shipping and handling! I'm very very happy. I started all over again because I had missed an entire week while I was at home. I have now done one week by myself in my dorm room. I'm still trying to figure out my pull up bar situation since none of them fit the weird door frames here. I got an adjustable one, but I can't put it up by myself, so my brother is coming later today to help me with that.

I've really been trying to eat healthy. On any given day, this is what I eat--a power bar and peanut butter first thing in the morning, sushi for lunch, and yes, sushi again for dinner (considering my other options are pasta, Chick-Fil-A, pizza, or Burger King. Sometimes I have another power bar later on in the evening if I'm still hungry. I treat myself on the weekends, but still try to eat fast food only like once or twice a month. Does that sound alright?

Hey!

That's great! I'm really happy that you were able to get the system! Which program are you doing? Most girl like to go with the Lean program, but whatever gets you the results you want, go for it!

As for the nutrition, Chick-fil-A really has some things that are ok for your nutrition program. There's actually a list of fast food restaurants and what you should get and what servings of what categories they provide in the back of your P90X nutrition guide. I know it's hard to find time in a college schedule, but you should really try to take the time to read through both of those books that you got (not just look through, READ).

Keep posting, and keep pushing play!
