Insanity and Knee Pain
2/24/10 6:33 AM
Hello!! I have been hearing quit a bit about pain in the knees from doing Insanity.

Does anyone take anything in particular to help with that? Ibuprofen I guess would work fine but I want to hear your input.

Thanks

If you are going to do the program with knee pain, then I suggest you add Kathy Smith Yoga Stretch to offset the wear and tear on your knees. If you strategically manipulate the knees and feet, this strengthens then rather than tearing them down as some other exercises can do. The MOST important thing is to avoid injury. Your goal is to get strong, right? Well, think about joints and tendons and protect them with added support or offsetting exercises. Rub them with MSM prior to exercise or put moist hot towels on them to get more blood to that area to warm up the joint, lubricate.... Take care!

I take a joint/multivitamin pack from GNC and it seems to work. My knees were starting to kill me by week 3 but a month later all is well. It could also all be up in my head.

Thank you all. I don't have knee problems or joint problems, BUT was wondering about it because I hear so much about people getting hurt or hurting on their knees and joints with Insanity.

Once I get the program, I guess I will find out.

Thanks!

I've had knee surgery on my right knee and suffer from some sort of arthritis in it. I've been told by my doctor that I really can't injure the knee any more since it's a genetic problem, and any exercises I do are actually good because they will strengthen the joints. I do get pain a lot, but I'm taking a multi vitamin in drink format called the origin of life. I got it at Vitamin World, I'm not sure if it's a Vitamin World specific product because I ripped the label off. As it's said in the insanity nutrition guide, multivitamins are like assurance to your diet. I'm not sure if that's what's helped me stay relatively pain free, but in the past my right knee would be killing me from this sort of exercise.

Hi Peeps! Answering ur question about Insanity and knee pain:

Tips:

1. Put extra padding on ur floor. I use those interlocking foam mats and throw a cushioned area rug on top of that.

2. Wear good Crosstrainers - Running shoes don't give enough support

3. Land on ur toes with ALL of the jumps

4. Check ur form. Bad form on squats and lunges lead to knee pain

With the impact of Insanity, I was having some trouble with my knees in the first round; I started supplementing with the following:

1500mg Vitamin C/day (500mgx3)
fish oil tablets/day (x3/day)
Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM (x3/day) (takes 2 weeks to start working)

These all have anti-inflammatory properties. If you are allergic to fish or shellfish, ask your doctor first before taking the Chondroitin.

Hope this helps!

Thanks leeial, this helps me too. It's good to be reminded to check form and make sure you are landing soft. I actually do my workouts on carpet. I'm surprisingly not in as much knee pain as I thought I would be. Other parts of my body are sore, but my right knee, the one I had surgery on, is holding up. I also have inserts in my shoes.

Wondering if anyone's knees have started "crackling." I am also a runner, and have never, ever had problems with my knees prior to starting Insanity. After a couple weeks of my normal runs plus Insanity on my "indoor" days, I noticed my knee starting to hurt, and a couple weeks later, I found myself unable to walk after a run- flexing and extending was agonizing. That subsided after a few hours, but ever since I can't run more than 3 miles without pain, and my knee crackles when I bend, extend, and go up stairs. Can anti-inflammatories really make a difference? This wasn't an acute injury- no moment where I knew I'd messed it up- it came on gradually, but now seems to be a fairly serious issue. Quit Insanity, doing other things indoors that don't aggravate my knees (strength and low impact), and even with a week off running, when I tried to run again, same deal.

I too am having this issue...I cannot bend my knees at the moment without hurt. Tomorrow I see the orthopedic dr... However, I am overweight; getting on this this program - what was I thinking? "I'm sorry knees!!" Prior to Insanity, I was walking at work and at home, and doing Taebo Amped, or Turbo Jam 20 min workouts, I needed more, so I got Insanity...! However, after reading more and now hurt, this program may be too harsh for your knees if you are 25 or more pounds overweight. But I miss Shaun T though! I loved his workout programs, I was always pushing myself everyday to do better, I sweated during the routines like I had never sweated before!! I started at the mid February, and started to lose inches. But now everything has been put on hold until I figure out what happened. emoticon

This is what scares me about Insanity. I was hoping to maybe graduate to it after I'd lost most of my weight, as extra weight surely makes it harder on the knees. But since you are a runner already, I am guessing that you weren't very overweight when beginning Insanity?

I've done a full round of Insanity and then a full round of a mix of Insanity and P90X (2X P90X grad too).

The thing to always, always, always keep in mind with Insanity is to pay attention to your form. Especially as you start to get tired it's easy to start doing things slightly wrong and cause injury.

A lot of people get themselves into trouble by trying to push through a little too much. You'll hear Shaun T say many times that when your form goes south to take a quick break. 5 seconds is often enough to get yourself back to good form.

The other thing to keep in mind is to wear the right footware and if you can workout on the correct surface. I've personally found the best solution for me is to do Insanity barefoot since I'm working out on berber carpet. When I tried to wear my cross trainers I felt my feet getting "caught" too much.

Hope that helps you guys.

I got mine at Target. I've also seen them at lowes in the rug section. Certainly a sporting goods store likely will also carry them.

Arnica losenges, dry brushing after workouts, flax/hemp oil, and Bazi (drinkbazi.biz/harmonious) have all helped me through it.

Hey Corrinej, I also am a runner. Prior to insanity I was doing 6 mile runs 4x a week
with no knee problems at all. I then added in insanity and the problems began. The pain was so excrutiating I went to my orthopedic surgeon. He diagnosed me with patellar tendonitis in both knees. I am sooo bummed because running is my passion and I have not been able to run for the past 3 months. He told me that I have to cut down on the insanity (no jumping at all) and add in some form of low impact on the days that I do not do insanity (spinning is my activity for now). He prescribed me real strong anti-inflammatories LOL. Hopefully this pain will go away soon. Good luck to all :-)

Hi all,

I have a Cruciate ligament in my right knee. Can I use insanity workout with this injury?
BTW, I can walk normally on my leg.

Thanks
