Insanity Help Please, The bottom of my feet hurt when I workout

On second week of Insanity and during each workout the bottom of my feet burn really bad. I have to stop at times because it is so painful. I completed P90X with no problems. I currently use new and old shoes and sometimes go barefoot and I get no comfort. Any suggestions? I did not purchase the cross trainers beacuse when I went to try them at the store, it caused my feet to go inward when I walked. Does that matter?

Please help. I love the workout. Pure Cardio is Pure Insanity!!!!!

Thanks

My feet have also started hurting and I am on week four of the Insanity program. The way that I get around the pain is to land on my whole foot and not do everything from the balls of my feet. Any, not sure if this will help. Good luck with the rest of the program!

Do you have flat feet? Best way to tell is to look in the mirror when you're standing. Is there an arch on your foot, or is it flat on the ground?

This was a serious issue for me for years. I have very flat feet, and when ice skating, skiing, or doing something like insanity, I have extreme burning in my feet. I struggled to do the stretch after the warm up because me feet hurt so much. I've finally solved about 80% of the problem.

The solution is three parts. Part 1, get into better shape. The more I did Insanity, and strengthened my stabilizer and foot muscles, the less pain. That being said, it was still very, very painful. Part two, get some good cross-trainers with arch support. I tried a whole bunch of them and ended up with Asics GEL-Intensity. Made a huge difference over the previous cross-trainers I was using. Part 3, get yourself a pair of "Superfeet" insoles. You'll find them in running, ski, or hockey stores. I use green in my cross trainers, yellow in my skates, and red in my ski boots. That remedied a lot more of the pain.

Bottom line, I'm not pain free at this point, but I hardly notice it any longer. Good luck, it took me years to figure it out.

thanks for the feedback, I looked into cross trainers but they felt so weird I didn't get them. I will invest in a pair and look into the insoles. Thanks again, hopefully this will help me get into shape.

keep looking for cross-trainers until you find a pair that work. Like all types of shoes there many different makes and models, and some will feel funny while others will be very comfortable. Running shoes don't give the support needed for the lateral movement in the program. Court shoes may not have the needed flexibility (too stiff).

Hey there- I have the exact same issue. Almost feels like a muscle cramp in my arch-- and I tightened my shoelaces and BAM pain was gone. I think I may have been clenching my foot in order to keep it from sliding to and fro inside my shoe.

It might be your problem, too. At least it's worth a shot :-)

Another thought-- what kind of surface are you working out on? If it's slippery you will have problems.

Thanks for the feedback. I went to an orthopedic shoe store yesterday and learned a lot. The shoes I had were horrible. A good shoe should not bend in the middle and mine did. I purchased a pair of Brooks and worked out last night and only one time did my feet hurt. I also looked at a pair of Asics but they were about the same price so I thought I would try the Brooks since never have before. So far- very pleased.

Thanks again everyone and good luck!

I've had the exact same issues. I have very flat feet and usually wear orthotics for running. I've found those actually hurt my feet more for purposes of Insanity.

Similar to Jonty, I also bought a pair of Asics Gel Intensity cross-trainers. Those really help with lateral stability, especially on things like Heisman, hit the floor, etc. I also found like A-Rod8 that tightening the laces helps a lot. Additionally, run the laces through the widest holes on the last set of holes. (There's usually two sets to choose from.) I found this creates a snugger fit and holds your foot in place even better. I can't wait to try Jonty's 3rd suggestion of the Surefeet inserts.

A couple of other things I tried: I bought a 3/4 inch foam exercise mat. You can get them on Amazon. They come in squares that fit together like a puzzle, so you can make your workout space as big as you want. The extra cushioning helps and it also dampens the sound of all the jumping around. I'm also now doing the warm-up in my socks. Then I put my shoes on quickly before going into the stretch. This has really helped me.

Thanks for this thread. Let me know if anything else helps. emoticon

My feet have hurt SO terribly bad and its only my fourth day of insanity! I think I will buy a new pair of shoes b/c the ones I have were primarily for running...any suggestions for good cross trainers that won't break my bank?

Hey everyone! Im on Month 2 of Insanity, nearly done. I too could relate to the sore feet problem in the beggining. What I did, was for the warm up parts all the way through to after the Stretchings, I would wear regular running sports shoes and then when I was finished with that I would do the rest barefoot. It really helps and eventually I was able to just do the whole workouts with just the shoes. Your body will just simply get adjusted to it, and soon enough you just forget about it. Let your feet breath, and give them a break such as this. It will all get easier... promise.

Guys, part of the problem is that most of us are just not used to that kind of workouts so our bodies need to adjust. A nurse on one of the old threads I was on told us that tendons and ligaments take a lot longer to strengthen and get used to than muscles do. The older you get it takes even longer.

Whenever I start a new round of Insanity my feet kill me by week 2 and it lasts for about a week to 10 days then it gets much better. Basically what I do is I take it easier on some of the moves where it hurts most. I might substitute some of the more painful moves with just running in place or something like that, for example.

It is also very important to follow the schedule as designed. Take the days off and do the recovery workouts to give the body a chance to heal a bit.

As far as the shoe thing. I have actually read a lot of research on shoes and the best things for people doing this kind of working out, or lots of running, is bare feet. But, since most people need some protection for their feet the next best thing is Vibram's 5 finger sneakers/shoes. They look funky but they are the best. Everyone I have ever heard that uses them has said so.

I know it makes no sense but it is the same as buying a mattress. Someone with a back problem is usually supposed to get a firm mattress. Wouldn't logic lead you to believe that softer is better? Same kind of concept here.

Hope this helps. Just try to push through it. Make sure you do your stretching, and more if needed, and just don't overdo it.

I have flat feet and yes, a lot of the jumping can cause burning/pain but I drive through it. I'm getting used to it but know exactly what you mean.

insanity arches acrobatics
2/22/12 4:02 PM as a reply to longshaw021304.
I do acrobatics and gymnastics. All that is done with bare feet and I found that when I put on shoes to do the Insanity workouts, my feet were killing me! I had to resort to doing it shoe-less which, for my feet, wasn't a big deal. But i do remember when i ratcheted up my acro training, i had to go through the "my feet are getting torn up" stage; which meant cracked skin from dryness, ripped toenails, LOTS of stubbed toes, and the more than occasional bruise. now i get none of that, but won't win any foot model competitions!

I really subscribe to the vibram 5-finger shoe philosophy. Because I can do the insanity workouts barefoot, i'm sure most people can. There is a lot of literature and supporting arguments for letting the natural foot do its thing and that most overly cushioned shoes and supportive arches while providing relief from day to day soreness, never really address the issue that your foot is out of shape. Also, a lot of these shoes can enforce bad habits such as landing harder than you should, or letting the shoe make the pronation/supination adjustment for you rather than your foot making it.

So, make the decision based on what you think is best for you and remember that our bodies are amazing apparatus that can, and have over centuries, handle what we throw at them!

I had feet trouble and troubles with sore knees from poor shoes and I purchased a pair of Nike Air Pegasus +27, a running shoe I know, but they are incredibly soft and have a thick, nice cushion and they helped take away all soreness I had. These are the softest, nicest work out shoes I've ever used! I would definitely recommend them! Good luck with Insanity emoticon

So that's a way to help? Buying cross trainers? I used to wear low top shoes when I worked out. Whenever I did the jumping jacks, running heisman, or high knees I could just feel this muscle in my foot burning with pain and sometimes It hurt to point I couldn't keep up with the stretches or id miss an entire workout segment. I tried landing on my entire foot but I have the same problems. Should I discuss it with my doctor or is there a simple remedy? I'm only two weeks into Insanity.

With insanity they actually recommend a good pair of crosstrainers as opposed to a running shoe.

I have been in an out of shape for the past 20 yrs. Regular muscle pain and sore muscles I can deal with.....but MY FEET KILL ME! I, too, am in week 2 of Insanity.

It seems with each workout program I do, I get a different soreness or straight out pain in a certain spot, but after working through, it goes away. Seems with Insanity it is located at the feet, particularly right on the inside of my arch, and directly across on the outside of my foot / arch (Both feet and at the same time). It is a burning pain that keeps getting stronger if I do not stop. So I stop, stretch it out and keep going. The pain eventually goes away and I continue on.

The fact it comes on at the same time / same place, leads me to believe it is my feet adjusting to the new movements and muscle use. I have never done this much jumping and moving with my feet in any program. I am sure my feet will adjust, as previous posters stated our bodies and muscles adjust as needed....

I take off my shoes, put on my shoes, use a mat / don;t use a mat, tried Asic running shoes, switched to Solomon trail shoes, New Balance cross-trainers, etc.....all to the same effect. I have not tried the 5 Fingers yet, and might.....I hear nothing but great reviews about the 5 Fingers.......

I will continue on with my feet and try to stretch better before and after. I do relaize I am 43 and going at it like I used to just 5 years ago......boy oh boy has my body changed in jsut those few years......

I know it's been awhile since this post was made but I just really wanted to thank you for posting this! I have been having the same major pains in my feet and almost decided not to do insanity anymore. I'm going to take the advice of everyone on this message board and start the program over. Thanks again this was really a huge relief to know I'm not the only one going through this!!
