Starting on Sunday - A couple of questions
Showing 11 results.
I just finished P90 and I am in my resting week to start CE on Sunday, however, as I went through the materials a couple of questions popped up:
  1. What happens after you complete day 30 - do you rest for balance of week, or continue immediately? For example, I mapped my week to start on Sunday, break on Monday and Saturday. 28 days is not an issue, but the phase is 30 days, so you have 1 more workout to go on day 30 (Sunday). Do you start with the next phase the next day (Monday), do you rest one day (Monday) and then start the next phase (Tuesday), or do you rest for balance of week and get back on it next week (Sunday)?
  2. The giude mentions 40 pounds as the top-limit for advanced users. I am not really advanced, but I have been impressed with how much I have improved with P90, and I was able to do some of the big muscle groups like back with heavier weights (30). Are 40 lbs plenty for some of the big muscles like lower body? I currently have dumbbells that go to 30 lbs and want to make sure I am fully geared. Any experience sharing will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

What i found online is that on day 29 you measure yourself and day 30 you rest.
i just finished burn phase today (day 27, i am supposed to rest tomorrow - but i don't rest anyway, i will do turbo jam). what i will do is that i will start push on saturday. i won't use days 29 and 30 to measure and rest, i will use them as days 1 and 2 from the next phase. In other words, i will complete the program in 12 weeks (84 days), not 90 days.
regarding the weight, i have not done P90, so i don't know how much were the weights used. my weights go up to 10 pounds only. i managed to make them work through the burn phase. i would say 30 pounds is more than enough. i only saw the guy going higher than 30....

Hi there! Congrats on finishing P90!

I'll try to answer your questions as best I can. Sorry if it is long...

1) Since this program is set up in 30 day phases, your rest days will not be the same every phase since there aren't 3 30 day months in a row. For example, if your schedule is;
Monday-Burn 1
Tuesday-Rest
Wednesday-Burn 2
Thursday-Burn Intervals/Abs
Friday-Burn 3
Saturday-Burn it off/Recharge
Sunday-Rest

Once you finish your fourth week you then would do
Monday-Burn it off/Recharge
Tuesday-Track Results

That extra cardio day and rest day count as a kind of mini rest period. Then you would start the Push phase on Wednesday. This changes your rest days to Thursday and Tuesday. Some people skip the mini rest period so that they can keep the same rest days every week. Personally I follow the program like it is written. I printed calendars out and wrote out my 90 days of workouts so I can just check them off as I go.

2) I think 30 pounds would probably be plenty. I have not done P90 so I'm not sure how they compare, but the lifting in this program is slow. You can't lift quite as much when it is slowed down.

I hope this helps! Good luck with the program, I think you will enjoy it. emoticon

Thanks so much for your feedback. I think you are right on the schedule. I went to auto-schedule in the WOWY supergym, and that is exactly how it came up: Day 29 - Recharge; Day 30 - Rest; Day 31 - Push circuit 1.

It sounds like 30 lbs will keep me busy - thanks for the feedback. It is ironic that the two programs take such a different approach. While Tony Horton (in P90) stresses to focus on form, he also stresses to explode in some movements (e.g. back). I found that while doing P90, I had to rewind the DVD many times as I was much slower than the people on screen. Besides, I was really pushing myself to fail at the 12th movement, so it was impossible for me to go to biceps curl immediatley after shoulder press - I needed at least 10 secs to put those dumbbells down.

Now, I have to say... P90 is a step up from 10 minute trainer, but it is intended for people who have worked out in the past and are out of shape; hence, I believe it is a step down from CE. It is comprised of D1, D3, and D5 of a full body workout + D2, D4, and D6 of cardio/core combinations + abs. D7 was rest. In other words, there was no focus on specific muscle groups on different days of the week. Still, The program was great and I saw amazing results with the only caviot that the workouts tend to get repetitive.

I am using CE as my evolution as I am not quite ready for P90X and/or Insanity. I can't wait for Sunday... Once you get into it, it is absolutely addictive!

Thanks again.

Hello Leisure, You had me laughing with your last post. I just ordered CLX and I am waiting for it to get here. I also have done P90 but prior to that I did Slim in 6 (one round-6weeks) and slim series (3 rounds 6weeks each) the last round doing doubles slim series in the morning and P90 in the evening to get my hubby started with Beach body. I had to laugh because I myself have been trying to figure out what weight I will need to start CLX. Mine only go up to 10 lb. I used the 10's for most everything in P90 but I think if I had them I could have gone heavier.

Slim in 6 and slim series are really good programs that actually got me over prepared for P90, I found it almost too easy, especially phase 1-2. I just ordered CLX and P90 master series, I hear Master series is a bit tougher, and hubby will be needing it soon.

So, I have to ask you, in your experience what weight would you recommend I start with? Thanks for your input, and remember to have fun pushing play! Thanks again, Tawny.emoticon

So far, here is my experience... It is based on my fitness level, but I hope it helps!

In P90 I was doing shoulder with 20 lbs, back (lanwnmower) with 25/30, biceps with 15/20 (15 for the 21s and 20 for the regular sets), etc. etc.

In CE, since I am really focusing on form and making it very slow, I find that weight feels heavier. I haven't gone beyong phase 1, but in the phase that I am in, all are combo exercises - lower + core + specific muscle group. So, in addition to form, your other muscle groups play a key role on how much weight you can acatully use. Let me give you a couple of examples:

I call this the "killer" exercise - Lunge with core rotation. My core is not that bad (love those ab sets from P90), but my hamstrings are weak. Chalean used 25, and I thought I could do 20. I almost collapse the first time around. I lowered it to 15 and pushed my way through the last rep - I still felt like if I was dying. If I were to do the core rotation only, 25 might not be an issue, but when I factored in the lunge, oh baby, that gave me a reality check. So, this depends on where you are stronger and weaker... I find that my wife has stronger hamstrings that I do; and I am way stronger on things like biceps/chest.

Shoulder-related I went to 10 lbs (half of what I was doing); Biceps, I am doing with 10/12 and all feel right - I am done by the time I am done.

I have not been on this long enought to see improvement, and how fast you can outgrow your weights. So, in other words, I am not sure if once my body gets used to the exercises, I can push myself harder, or they are really that tough! I do believe that is the later - you can almost make any weight feel really heavy with the right form.

Good luck... I hope you enjoy the program. I am starting to really enjoy it. Very different than P90 so just be patient. To be honest I miss the cardio from P90 (more heart than muscle) and the abs (I found them more balanced). But overall CE is a great program and I am confident it will take me to the absolute next level!

Leisure, thanks so much for your reply. I am thinking that I will just take the plunge and get a set of the selectechs that go to 52.5 lbs each. They are adjustable and I think they hit a lot of different weights in between. The programs I have done in the past Slim in 6 and Slim Series are Debbie Siebers workouts and she does a LOT of squats and lunges. She is nicknamed the "Squat Nazi" I know she has me in good shape hamstring wise, but I hear that Chalean adds in some heavier weights for squats so I will have to see what happens. Most of Debbie's squats done with weights are high reps at a low weight like 30 reps of each squat at 5 lb.s

Funny you should mention the cardio, I think that is the biggest thing most people doing Chalean extreme have said is that the cardio is lacking, and they have to add something in. I liked the sweat 3-4 better than the sweat 1-2 in P90, I guess I could work that in there some, gotta love the power yoga. LOLemoticon

Thanks again. Have fun pushing play! Tawnyemoticon

Hey Tawny,

Best of lucks with the program... Those selectechs look nice, so I am sure you will enjoy them. I incrementalized myself with hex-steel dumbbells(I found a place that used to sell @ $0.69/lb), and while I love the feel, once you pass 15 lbs, you can only go by 5 lb increments (20, 25, 30, etc.). I think having the option of 2.5 is a really nice feature. Also, I don't have a space issue (gotta love the basements).

On the cardio thing, I incorporated a nice long run/ellicptical/etc. on Day 2 (marked as rest). The rest of the days, I am sticking with the program. The cardio included will certainly push you. I am using a HR monitor and I found burning a lot more cals with CE than with sweat 3-4; however, I found it is a different type of cardio.

Anyway... best of lucks! Please let me know what you think once you get going. I am using CE as my prep for P90X (I am doing three reverse pushups on workout days, because I want to be able to pull myself at the end of CE).

Hello Leisure, Well hubby and I went dumbbell shopping and after looking at the selectechs we went to another store to look at the power blocks. I had always thought they looked really odd being square like they are with the 4 posts on the outside corners. The store we went to ended up having 3 different sets of power blocks, and the smallest ones I had never seen before are like regular dumbbells with only a center bar, and they adjust up to 24 lbs. each. I decided to go with those, for now and even if I go back in a few weeks and get the next size up that goes to 50 lbs. the two sets together cost the same as one set of the selectechs, so I can't go wrong there. I think 24 pounds will do me okay for awhile. I got the weights on Tuesday, and Chalean Extreme came in the mail on Wednesday so now all I have to do is get brave and open the box....emoticon I am planning to get really serious with my eating as well, I have been on the proverbial plateau for about 2 months now and I am down to the last 8-10 pounds which I know are the hardest to lose. I am hoping that CLX will help me with that, as I hear it has a really good nutrition and recipe guide.

I will let you know how it goes soon, I have not decided on a start date yet, I have been doing Debbie Sieber's workouts since July so any one new seems alien to me. LOL... Plus SI6 and slim series are both 6 week programs, so I always started on a monday and went by weeks. Now that I am going 90 days it will just be different. Oh the dilemma. Thanks for all your help. I hope your workouts are going well.

Bye 4 now, Tawnyemoticon

Hey Tawny,

I just finished the burn phase and went through the first push phase workout. I was surprised to see me using 30 lbs for some of the lower body exercises with proper form. It is amazing how you actually get stronger... Also, to be honest, in the push phase you completely isolate muscle groups (only lower body vs. upper/lower combo) and you go for a lot less reps - 8 certainly feel like nothing compared to 12; however, my bicpes had not been sore in a long time :o)

I am really starting to be fond of the program. I am still missing some more cardio and are about to incorporate simple elliptical work (long slow-paced / intervals / short and explosive) on the three resistance days and abs on the recharge day.

How are things with you?

Cheers!
