The P90X Transformation - My "Rebirthing"

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I thought I would go ahead and post a recent photo depicting my now six month transformation photo (bottom photo). P90X was hard, Insanity was harder. I really did not want to do it but I knew that in order to call myself fit, I had to improve my cardio vascular fitness and Insanity did just that. Like a lot of you X grads, I was nervous about losing some of the newly formed muscle that I had grown so fond of but I think the loss of muscle mass was minimal. Maybe a little in my back but I more than made up for it in my shoulders and chest.

Now, the time has come to merge the two programs together and take my fitness to a new level. If anyone wants to join me, I'd be happy to send my schedule out.

Nathan

Just completed Round 1 of P90X on Monday April 5th. I'm 34 years old and 6ft tall. I'm amazed that in only 90 days the human body can be transformed with the right nutrition and fitness...in that order.

Stats
Day 1 January 6th, 2010
Weight: 200
Body Fat: 28% (using at home EIA scale)

Day 90 April 5th, 2010
Weight: 178
Body Fat: 8.8% (nurse administered bioelectrical EIA)

Way to bring it bro, awesome results, your pics alone motivate me to push myself even harder. Did you follow the nutrition to a tee? I am trying to eat right as much as I can, however I am a cop and I work constantly and often have to eat out, and I find it hard to find healthy places to eat.

wow awesome results! You look like you really hit the nutrition part on the head I have been treaking my diet and seem to be yoyo ing a little. Though I feel that I am getting a better handle on what I need to eat for my metabolism. Nice post its a real motivator

Phenomenal results. Thanks for posting them.

Did you follow the nutrition plan in terms of calories recommended and protein/carb/fat breakdown, including bumping up the carbs to 60% in Phase 3?

I have to admit I question your starting weight/BF % though. No way did you look like 28% BF starting out. Maybe 18% at worst. Are you sure you measured accurately?

Sorry, but the numbers just don't add up. If you were 28%/200 lbs and now 8.8%/178 lbs that means you lost 40 lbs of pure fat (56 lbs fat to 15.6 lbs fat, or -3 lbs per week) and added 18 pounds of pure muscle during 90 days (144 lbs lean body mass to 162.4 lbs lbm, or +1.4 lbs/week). From everything I've read that is physiologically impossible. Since there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat, that would mean even if you're operating at a 1000 calorie/day deficit (which P90X does not recommend) you could lose at most 2 lbs fat per week. Even in that scenario, I wouldn't think it would be possible to put on >1 lb muscle per week at a 1000-calorie per day deficit, since muscle growth requires a caloric surplus .

I'm not trying to take away from your results - the pictures speak for themselves. I'm just trying to reconcile what you posted with everything I've read, since your numbers seem almost unreal and I want to keep my expectations realistic for my own P90X cycle.

Wow, amazing results. I like your "nutrition...& fitness" in that order comment. I did the program for 5 weeks a couple months ago & saw zero visible results because I didn't follow any sort of nutrition plan. Thanks for the inspiration, I started back up yesterday!

Thanks for the comments. The only reason I posted them on here was to hopefully provide motivation to those that are considering the program or have started and fell short of their goals.

Without question, the nutrition component was the hardest concept to figure out. But, that all changed after the first 30 days. Once I finally transformed my thinking to eating for fuel rather than for satisfaction and feeling full, it was not as difficult as I anticipated. I followed the nutrition plan to the letter in the first 30 days by using the meal planner and shopping list on teambeachbody.com. Once I hit the second phase, I basically used the same shopping list but mixed up the actual meals and portions to suit my caloric needs.

Once I hit about Day 50, I pretty much eliminated all refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, and rice (yes, even brown rice). These foods were basically replaced with an abundance of fresh vegetables. In other words, dinner for me always consisted of about 8 oz of protein such as broiled chicken (with plenty of seasoning), pork, fish, or beef (flank steak usually) and as many vegetables I could ingest...love me some broccoli.

All of these changes came after reading The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson.

Oh, and Shakeology for breakfast everyday...even when I was traveling. That variety of shakes you can make with that stuff are endless.

I have to address coolhwhip comments on the body fat. You are probably right about the incorrect BF number of 28%. That number came from my bathroom scale using Electronic Impedence Analysis. I think we all know the margin for error on those things is pretty high. However, the final 8.8% number came from the doctor using bioelectrical EIA with the electrodes hooked up to your wrist and foot. Believe me, I questioned it too but they felt confident it was accurate.

Anyway, thanks for comments. Let me know if I can clarify anything about the nutrition aspect of the program. Prior to the X, I never even bothered to read the nutrition info or worried about my protein to carb ratio so this is all new to me. I'm far from an expert but I know what worked for me.

Thanks for the follow-up.

So it sounds like you basically cut out all starchy carbohydrates for the 2nd half of the program? How closely did you track your calories and macronutrient ratios? What were they in the last 50 days?

It seems like it would be hard to get to 40% or 60% carbs eating primarily veggies as your carb source. I am also at about day 50 right now and feel like I'm not leaning out as much as I'd like now that I've upped the carb intake to 40%, even though my carbs are all coming from mostly clean sources (veggies, fruit, beans, steel-cut oats, brown rice, quinoa, greek yogurt...but mixing in some "not-so-good" carbs like Kashi GoLean and a protein bar now and then too). So I have been thinking along the same lines as you - cut out all non-veggie carbs except for my post-workout shake. This is why I was wondering about what you did for Phase 3, because I'm skeptical that a 60% carb diet could get me ripped like you, and I highly doubt that I could get to 60% carbs without including some starches/grains or tons of fruit (sugar).

I bonked many times in the first 30 days especially while I tried to figure out my nutrition needs. Since I workout in the evenings, I had to really make sure I had the proper amount of carbs without going overboard. A pre-workout banana seemed to really help.

Wow, this is really impressive. The changes after the time you cut out the carbs are really dramatic - and I don't just mean the chest-wax. I'm still on the Power 90 Master Series and will be on P90x in another six weeks. I cannot wait and you have really motivated me to re-think the diet I am on now.

Hah! I was wondering when someone was going to comment on the furless chest from Day 60 on. Probably should have put a disclaimer in my original post saying "P90X does not make you less hairy".

Cutting out the starchy and refined carbs came after reading The Primal Blueprint constantly. It totally changed my way of thinking about carbohydrates and sugar. I'm not a harcore PB'er as he calls it but try to incorporate most of his dietary principles into my everyday nutrition...even Post X.

So it sounds like maybe you didn't even bother counting calories or carb/protein % in the second half of the program? You just focused on "primal" eating? (which I presume is like paleo - meat, vegetables, nuts, fruits)? Just curious how many carbs per day you eventually "dialed in" at, if you know it.

I counted calories for about two weeks from day 50 to 65 and found that I usually was around 2100, on average. Once I got in the new lower carb routine, I would guess I was in the 100-150g per day range...but I certainly wasn't obsessive about it.

The staples of my diet were lots of nuts(mademias), full fat Greek yogurt, avocados, steamed veggies, and plenty of lean protein. Didn't really do many protein shakes other than a few Protein Plus bars now and then but only when necessary...and Shakeology for breakfast everyday.

Does that help at all?

Thanks, very interesting. I have always generally done better (in terms of fat loss, hunger control, and just "feeling" leaner) when I've done lower-carb/higher-fat in the past, and it sounds like that's exactly what you did, with great success. So I have been skeptical about moving to the 60% carb / 20% fat / 20% protein P90X recommendation for Phase 3, and I think your results help validate that skepticism. It has been quite hard for me to stick to the 20% fat, because I also like nuts and avocadoes and grass-fed beef, but I can hardly eat any of them before going over my 20%!

I'm thinking for Phase 3 I'm going to start carb/calorie cycling, which I've only experimented with in the past but I've heard gives great results. Something like:
Day 1,5: 300g carbs / 250g protein / 60g fat - 2740 cals (45%/35%/20%)
Day 2,6: 100g carbs / 225g protein / 100g fat - 2200 cals (20%/40%/40%)
Day 3,4,7: 200g carbs / 250g protein / 80g fat - 2520 cals (30%/40%/30%)

As an aside, I find your Primal eating approach interesting. When I first started being more diligent about my diet/fitness after hitting my peak weight a couple years ago, I actually had good success on the Warrior Diet, losing about 40 lbs over the course of 7 months. Have you heard of that approach? It's the basic Paleo/Primal philosophy in terms of food choices, except you eat sparingly during the day (only water and small amount of raw veggies), and eat one multi-course big meal at night consisting of, in this order: big salad, big serving of steamed veggies + protein, then either grains, or nuts (depending on if it's a "high-carb" day, or a "high-fat" day). I didn't weigh or portion out anything, just ate until satiety. The basic idea is it sort of mimics the way our ancestors used to eat, but there is a decent amount of scientific/hormonal rationale backing it up as well. But I started plateauing on this diet, so I switched to a more conventional 5-6 meals a day bodybuilding-type diet, weighing and portioning out everything, which I also kind of like but is certainly more cumbersome.

Thanks for this link. I spent about two hours reading through that website last night. Then today I started adding up all the carbs I was eating between Clif bars, bread, chicken marinades (wow), and the occasional bowl of cereal. I think I've figured out why my current weight-loss plateau has lasted six weeks. Even though I'm good on protein, and I've been sticking to about 1900-2100 calories a day (burning 750-900 calories every night on Power 90 Master Series), but I'm eating way too many carbs.

Today I am going to try and only eat 50-100g of carbs and see how that feels. Does that sound too low for a 185lb. guy? I really want to get to 170 (down from 205) and have been stuck at 185.

I'm writing this response from my hotel room in Cabo San Lucas and can't begin to tell you guys how great it feels to spend a day on the beach without fear of taking my shirt off in public. It really makes all the hard work over the last 90 days feel completely worth all the effort. As I said in
my first post , diet is the key to the whole program. I am by no means advocating 0 carb diet. It rather is a more realistic long term nutrition plan of eating plenty of fats and lean proteins and not worrying about counting calories and the exact amount of carbs I am
taking in every day. I simply don't eat bread, rice or any other refined carbs that will cause an excessive insulin response. If you rely want to cut weight and starting getting lean, you have to hit your workouts with 100% intensity and eat with extreme discipline. Even on vacation this week, I am eating some unbelievable foods but not depriving myself of all the delicious foods Cabo has to offer. I just skip the chips, tortillas, and rice. Lots of meat, veggies, avocodoes, and pico. With those things, I am completely content and satisfied.

PS - got any larger photos that show the changes in your face? My wife can't believe how different you look.

This is great advise. I'm only two weeks into P90x so I'm doing the low carb plan. I was concerned about the increases in carb levels in phase 2 and 3. I like your plan better. I easily lost 30 lbs before with an atkins type diet, so I think my body responds very well to cutting out refined carbs. I just ordered the Primal book and I will start following that the rest of the way. The only refined carbs I get are from my post workout drink which is chocolate milk. It's a cheap alternative and medical journals have proven it has the right mix of carbs and protein.

Glad to hear it. Just remember, the nutrition thing is mostly new to me so I am far from an expert. So I guess the point is to find what works for you and stay disciplined.
Let me know what you think of the book. Mark Sisson knows his stuff but sure a lot of people disagree with some his ideas.

Nate... Holy cripes you got ripped! I am not sure if your "mane" was hiding it in your 30 day pics but man the improvement from 30-60 is crazy! I'm not quite at the point of shaving my chest but it'll get there emoticon

I read through The Primal Blueprint as well as a few of the Paleo diet books. My body responded great to the low carb eating. I would say 75% of my carbs were from veggies and Shakeology (I drank it on cardio days, mainly). I think I mentioned it in my email to you but if phase 1 I dropped 10 pounds(about 100-120 carbs). In phase 2 I only lost 6 pounds. However, in phase 3 I went down to 20-40 carbs and dropped 12 pounds! This round I'm definitely staying low carb and I can bet thats why you got soooo ripped.

Nice work Nate!
