Insanity without shoes??
4/30/10 2:12 PM
Hey folks!

I am about to complete my first round of P90X next week! Ive seen great results, and I'm probably going to start Insanity after this. However, I do my P90X workouts barefoot in my living room. Will I be able to go shoe-less during insanity? I hope so, but thought I would check. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

They guy says you should have good shoes for it since there's a ton of high impact stuff. How'd you get through P90X's Plyo without shoes? I tried it once and was brutal but I'm on hard wood floors.

Surprisingly I prefer it. It was much easier and made for nice soft landings. I'm anxious to hear if anyone else has done it without shoes. Also, did anyone do insanity on carpet? Was that ok for you? I'm thinking about getting some floor mats to work out on since I plan on sweating so much emoticon

i dont think you'll be able to do Insanity without shoes. The program consists of a lot of fast-paced moves that definitely require good grip on your shoes otherwise you will end up slipping all over the place and getting rug burn on your feet.

i am just finishing week 2 and done barefoot every time. I do almost all my workouts barefoot so i'm use to it, i would say try it and if it starts to hurt put them on. Has not hurt me yet.

I also do p90x and insanity w/o shoes. I have floor mats on top of pergo flooring. My feet throb and ache if I try to wear shoes, but I've often wondered if not wearing shoes somehow decreases the fitness achievements?

I actually do my Insanity workouts without shoes. I originally started with old running shoes then went to bare feet due to pain while using shoes. I was working out with shoes on carpet. I started going barefoot but before long my feet would hurt so I bought new shoes. The pain came up again - usually on the outsides of my feet. I bought 1/2 inch mats used to support exercise equipment and put that on the carpet. Now I have zero foot pain going barefoot on the mats.

You'll find that it's going to be up to the individual. If your feet are used to not having the support of the shoes (good cross-trainers for Insanity) then suddenly putting them into shoes for a high paced program like Insanity will be painful. I would say that if you've done the X without shoes then keep going with Insanity. You'll know within the first few days if you've made the right choice.

Good luck!

I'm having a HUGE problem with my ankles! I just finished week three today, and in week two I felt like I had "sprained" my ankles. I figured it was just another part of the process (i.e. working muscles that I haven't worked in a very long time). The pain in my right ankle has gotten much better, however, the pain in my left ankle is almost unbearable at times. I was nearly stranded in the grocery store last week, and had to hobble out to the car. I'm 40 years old, 5'7" and weigh 120 lbs. I'm not sure what is putting the added stress on my ankles? I was going to buy new shoes until the camara zoomed in on one of the girls in the workout, and she was wearing the exact same shoes (I also know different shoes work for different people). My ankles haven't had any rest as on day seven, I always do some type of exercise (insane abs, pilates, etc.) I've tried icing, heat, elevation...just about everything. Should I try an over-the-counter brace/wrap? I can't take a break, I'm doing too well. I've tried going barefoot, however, I don't recommend this as even on carpet, I couldn't grip during some of the workout and had to put my shoes back on. Has anybody else had this problem? If so, please give me advice. It's definitely hindering my workout, as I cannot do high-knees or butt-kicks, just to name a few. During the exercise that are painful, I do moves that are not painful and never stop moving, but I want to stay in the "mental game". Please help! The pain I get reminds me exactly of how my shin splints felt in high school, only the pain is in my ankle and radiates along the top of my foot. No bruising or swelling, just pain.

Thanks for all the input! I'm glad to hear that others have had success doing P90X or Insanity barefoot! I think i'm going to give it a shot and see how it feels. The only things I'm worried about are the push-up jacks for example, where I'm jumping downward on my toes, and the suicide jumps, etc. I don't know what other moves will be difficult, but since I've done Plyo and Kenpo with bare feet, I think it could be possible.

Justine - Injuries are difficult -- There's not a whole lot of "advice" that anyone can give you regarding whether or not you should keep going, except for a doctor of course. I would possibly consider getting one of those ankle braces, that could perhaps help, but it's very hard to say without knowing specifically what is wrong! I could speculate, however, that it could be minor tendonitis in your foot. That seems to be a faily common issue I see on these boards.

Hope this helps! Keep us posted on your progress and updates!

Wow, kudos to all that can complete Insanity barefoot. I guess one has to transition into doing the entire workout that way, do some exercises w/ shoes & barefoot (that's what I would do). I don't know if I could do that for the whole workout (I have done jumping jacks barefoot on carpet but not much else) because I worry about my joints (knees & ankles). I have done jumps & leaps in dance on flooring made for that purpose, but barefoot high impact exercises at home for a long length of time, kind of makes me nervous.

Justine- Make sure to take off & land on the balls of your feet w/ the jumps (land softly), it could be that you are not always doing that. Is your core strong? Sometimes having a weak core can make the high impact exercises much harder to perform w/ proper form. You should do a Google search for ankle strengthening exercises (it would be a mix of stretches & exercises). I would link a good article for it, but BB moderators would cut it (you can send me a buddy request and I can PM it to you, if you like). I found an article that had calf raises, low leg swings (balanced on one foot), counter-clockwise & clockwise circles w/ the foot (seated, leg being worked is straightened), toe raises (seated, legs on floor, keep heel of working leg on floor and raise toe up & then lower to ground) & jumps (or side step quickly) in a quadrant (working all around a cross shape/+ made w/ tape or you could just mentally be aware of the shape: side to side- alternate reps on left & right, front to back, back to front- repeat on right & left, 5 jumps in each direction), it was recommended 2 sets of 10 reps for all of the other exercises. You would do the exercises, 3 x's a week. Also, look up stretches for the calves: soleus, gastrocnemius & ankle: anterior tibialus to do w/ the strengthening exercises. I have been incorporating more running into my exercise regimen, and the inside of my ankle has been mildly sore at time (and I have no history of ankle issues and I regularly work my lower body w/ resistance training but obviously I need to work on strengthening the ankles). Perhaps you should cut back on the Insanity workouts per week (alternate w/ other lower impact cardio and/or resistance training), until your ankle pain is reduced or fully resolved, as you don't want to cause a serious injury, and it already sounds very painful. Hope you feel better soon.

That also raises another point. Would anyone recommend getting floor mats if I am working out on carpet? Can't wait to get started!

I'm doing it without shoes. Our feet our designed for impact and all that stuff we put them through. Shoe's aren't and do more harm then good sometimes when working out. The first week i went shoeless my feet were real sore as if i used muscles i never used before. Going shoeless with insanity has made my feet pretty strong. I tried using a mat on the 3rd week and it ended up causing knee pain, ankle pain. I took it out and 2 days later the pain went away. I tried insanity with shoes and felt the same way. I'm working out on carpet but under that is concrete so it isn't to soft. The trick is in learning on how to use your feet as they are designed to. You feet are like shock absorbers. Stay off your heels and you'll be fine.

I have done some of Insanity barefoot. I had pain in the outer sides of my feet as well. I tried several pairs & types of shoes, but they all caused some sort of pain. I grew up doing gymanstics & dance, so I was either barefoot or close to it so I thought I'd try Insanity without shoes. I feel like I can jump higher & have fewer rests when I don't have shoes on. But it's all a personal preference.

Hey there! I had started p90x barefoot ...but i hate weights...

Now ive been doing insanity for about a month now (entering 3rd day of month 2 workouts...)

I gotta say in the beginning i had to adjust not to "slip" on the carpet but yeah you learn better how to balance your body when you're barefoot IMO because you don't have the support of the shoe to account for part of the balance..

I gotta admit im not used to that much shock on my legs though so my knees may hurt a little after the workout(i overdid it during recovery week with running + core cardio /balance every single day...cause i was scared of month 2...with reason lol)

But in the end, knees hurt and around the lower part of the calf too... but my legs are just not used to working that much anymore...

So yeah, barefoot, barechest, BARE EVERYTHING :p

Bare with the pain too

I do the insanity work out wearing Vibram Five Fingers. They give you the benefits of workout barefoot but still have grip. I use the mocs which have a really great grip pattern on the bottom (great for Yoga as well). I HIGHLY recommend them. They work the calfs and legs great. Go to vibramfivefingers.com to find out more!

Hi Jrivner- I have heard mostly positive reviews on the Vibram Five Fingers, I may check those out. Do you use them w/ other types of cardio (running, martial arts)? Did you have an issue w/ selecting the proper size for your feet (via ordering online vs. a local store)? How long does a pair last w/ regular use (ex. common recommendation to purchase new running shoes every 500 miles)?

I think i am starting to have the same problem... i just started week three of insanity today. as i was poking around the internet i found that this may be the problem. it sounds very similar and has many of the same symptoms. my pain is on the inside of the foot just below the ankle. google search "Posterior tibial tendonitis" and tell me what you think.

I tried to do it shoeless the first couple of days and it hurt my feet really bad. Then I tried some old beat up tennis shoes I had and my feet got so bad that I had to buy inserts for my shoes during the day and wrap my ankle in the evening. Finally I broke down and got some cross trainers and the pain all went away. Do yourself a favor and just get some shoes. I don't wear mine anywhere other than inside the house so I won't drag in dirt. I can go longer and harder with them and don't have pain during the day. The Finish Line had a deal going for New Balance Cross Trainers for about $30. I just had to go in and tell them I wanted those shoes as listed online - they had them in the back, but didn't have a floor display. They're not the most stylish, just a simple white shoe. But then I generally wear them with black socks and boxer shorts - so I guess that's the least of my worries if someone sees me ;)
