Shakeology side effects - any alternatives?
vomit diarrhea
9/26/10 8:35 AM
I sampled a packet of Chocolate Shakeology a couple weeks ago for dinner, and within 3 hours I became nauseous and had to run to the bathroom (vomit and diarrhea) many times the rest of the night! I was three weeks into my hybrid program and was eating pretty healthy, so I thought the reaction was due to something I ate earlier in the day that didn't sit well with the Shakeology. Before I committed to purchasing the Shakeology, my coach sent me another sample to make sure the reaction was just a one time thing. Well, I tried it again as my afternoon snack a couple days ago, and got the same reaction. This time it happened within 2.5 hrs, but I was able to keep myself from vomiting, although I was still very nauseous. Can anyone tell me why I had these side effects?? The nutritional benefits of this product are unmatched and I was so ready and willing to purchase a month supply, but don't want to put my body thru the same misery again. I want to just go ahead and buy it and just see what will happen after a few consecutive days of drinking the shake, but not sure if that will be a good idea. Has anyone had the same side effects, but then it disappeared after drinking it for several days?

Also, are there any alternatives that offer nutritional benefits close to what Shakeology does?

Well the downside of all its ingredients is that if you have a reaction, it could be to any of them since everyone may react differently. I would not keep drinking it in the hopes of getting used to it, not worth being sick. However, if you *really* want it to work, you could try getting another sample and trying a half or a quarter dose of it. It could be just the strength of whatever ingredient is bothering you.

Something else to consider, it does have calcium and iron. I know I tend to get sick when I take vitamins that contain calcium and iron on an empty stomach. It could actually just be one or the other but Ive only noticed it in combo ones and only on an empty stomach. Did you take your samples first thing in the morning as breakfast with nothing else added? If you are just sensitive to those vitamins, it might work if you took it as a snack later in the day or if you added various items to the shake to help buffer it.

Otherwise for alternatives, there are a number of greens formulas. You could go to your local vitamin stores with a print out of shakeologies ingredients to see what they have comparable. Even if it is not the same thing, you may do better with a product with fewer ingredients or a different composition. GNC has a woman's active formula with some greens, fiber, protein, etc in it, but I think it tastes pretty iron-ish. You could also get just plain green formulas (like maximum greens or whatever) and add it to your favorite protein powder if you cannot find an all in one that works for you. I have a mixture of options at home because I like to shop the clearance items at GNC and Vitamin Shoppe. Gives me plenty of new things to try and ways to mix and match them. I do have to say that the shakeology tends to taste better than the others.

If you have a natural/organic type food store nearby, such as Earth Fare, they may have a vitamin/nutrition section with some possibilities. I haven't used this source as much because the local store near me is fairly new so no real clearance items yet (Im a cheapskate) and their products tend to be a bit higher priced.

I also had this reaction with Shakeology. I used to use it regularly before the birth of my 3rd child but stopped when I was pregnant. I started using again when I was going to start working out after the birth of my son and was doing ok then suddenly started having this reaction. The first time I thought it was a flu or something, but it was awful! I tried it again and got violently ill again. I loved how shakeology made me feel when I started taking it pre pregnancy, but now I don't understand why this is happening. If anyone has any thoughts.. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Hey Everyone!!

I have the ANSWER to the nausia/diahrrea!! The reason your bodies are having this reaction is because you are drinking the shake TOO FAST and it is hitting your system too quickly!
I had the same problem for the first day and asked my doctor. He said that the Shake has a lot of GREAT stuff in it and when it hits that fast and you are taking drink after drink, your body does not know what to do so it freaks out.

The way to fix this is to have it as 2 snacks the first couple of days (make it in the morning and have it for morning snack and afternoon snack) and now I am great! I can take the whole thing as a meal with NO side effects.

I promise, this shake is worth the slow introduction!!
I have taken it a week and already lost 2 pounds.
Its great!!
Hope this helps..

That's an awesome answer/response! I love this product and if consumed too quickly or with not enough water or even on an empty stomach you might feel this feeling. I have only reacted this way one time but never vomited just got nauseated. I drank a lot of water and that helped me feel much better!

So sorry for my late response! I had no idea there were responses to my post until I did a Google search today on Shakeology and the symptoms I experienced and my post was one of the hits. I guess I should check the message board more often...

Anyways, thanks for your advice! It makes a lot of sense that drinking the shake on an empty stomach may have been the cause of my extreme reactions. When I take multivitamins I have to take it with food, otherwise I get very nauseous. So the calcium or iron in the shake could explain why I didn't respond well. But I also wonder if it could be what FitKrissie said in her post. When I tried the shake, I didn't just drink it, I chugged it. So, I think I'm going to try the shake again but divide the packet into two servings instead of one to slowly introduce the ingredients to my body. If that doesn't work, then I'll just have to take your advice and go to a health/organic food store. I went to one a couple days ago to pick up some medicinal herbs to make tea with and saw an abundance of supplements. However, they are pretty pricey so I would probably be better off finding something at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. Thanks again for your help!

FitKrissie,

I think this may be the reason for my extreme reaction to Shakeology when I tried it a few months ago. Like I told rainessa, I chugged the shake, rather than just drink it. I assumed I could drink it like a protein shake so I just downed it like such. I guess I didn't give my body enough time to process what I was putting in so it did what it was supposed to do and got rid of it. With your advice, I definitely will give Shakeology another shot! I'm actually excited because Shakeology has so many benefits it was a little upset that my body reacted the way it did. Hopefully, this will help and I can start taking it as a meal without any problems.

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for this post. I had been taking the shakes for about 2 weeks. One day I got kind of nauseated and another day I got sooo sooo sick! I thought I would not be able to take it again. But that morning I did have it on an empty stomach and drank it fast. This answer makes sense and I will try again, but much more carefully.

Thanks!

Hi FitKrissie! Thanks so much for your advice to those of us who suffer from "Shakeolgy Syndrome". I just got back from the ER due to the violent attack of severe vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea. I was so dyhydrated and my kidneys hurt so bad, I was afraid I had a kidney infection. Nope. Shakeology. This is not the first time this has happened yet I hoped beyond hope that it wouldn’t happen again today. It did. What’s odd is I used to drink Shakeology all the time with NO PROBLEMS! Then one morning – wham! Violently sick. I refused to think it was due to Shakeology and attributed it to something I ate the night before. However, it happened a second time and then again today (the most violent and longest duration of symptoms). I hope your advice works for some, but as for me, it doesn’t matter how fast or slow I drink my shake. I was sitting leisurely on my deck this afternoon, soaking up the sun and sipping my Shakeology. After 1 hour passed with no ill effects, I thought, “Success!! I can drink Shakeology again!” Wrong. The ER docs told me to never ever ingest it again. I hope others have success with your imput and I thank you for your post. However, I am staying away from Shakeology from now on! emoticon

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing these effects. I had a very similar experience. Took the Shakeology for nearly 3 weeks - liked it, no ill effects. Was away for a week traveling. Came home, had a shake and 2-3 hours later - wow - diarrhea, nausea. It put me down. Severe diarrhea, put me in bed. I also thought it was something else, tried a different flavor, different batch (thought it might have been flavor or a bad batch). If anything, subsequent experiences (and I tried 4 times) were more pronounced, more severe, and onset was sooner. For what it's worth I also tried taking it slowly - only half a shake. No luck though. On the plus side, Team Beachbody has promised a full refund. Good luck!

Oh I wish I had read this thread last week before I ordered! I started a 3 day cleanse this morning and I have been so nauseous all day. I don't think I can drink 3 of these today! unsure:

I also bought some sample packets to try before I made a financial commitment of my own starter kit. I am naturally lactose intolerant and only drink almond milk. I tried the chocolate flavor. I've only used half of the packet each time and I sip on it from the time I get to work (8:00 am) until about 11:00. My stomach begins rumbling quite loudly and I can't find a restroom quick enough. I thought it was just a fluke but started searching out the message boards today to see if there might be a connection. I also took a look at the ingredients and it has 500 mg of calcium and 15 g of whey protein. I'm sure this is a no brainer for some but I didn't even think about a protein shake having so much calcium. I'm sure this is why I've been getting such a bad tummy reaction. I still have a greenberry sample pack. I may try this tomorrow but it has the same percentages. I'll keep you posted. I am thankful to see it's not just me and that I only purchased a small supply.

shakeology nausea
9/14/11 10:26 AM as a reply to abadyn.
Thank you for this thread! I started Shakeology (Chocolate shake with coconut water) for almost 30 days, no problem. One day, I brought my drink with me for exposure. It was a hot summer day and I finished the last sip a few hours later. Combined with the heat, bus ride, etc; long story short, I checked into ER the evening of the following day. Chest nausea, vomiting.

Waited for 10 days, tried Greenberry pack with banana, blueberries, almond milk shake in the blender. Drank it all at once, two full glasses of liquid. Experienced nausea the following day. I canceled my SK HD yesterday. Trying chocolate pack with half a dosage. Hoping that I can continue but will see. Scheduled to see my primary care physician next week.

I agree with this train of thought. I was speaking with the Coach Relations Rep yesterday. This morning, I had omelet, toast, along with half a dose of the shake, feeling pretty full. Drinking water afterwards, hoping this will be all right as the day goes on.

I also, am hoping to stay on Shakeology and trying to find a way to stay with it.

I have been drinking it on an empty stomach for nearly 3 months now and have never had this issue. I also consume it within 3-4 minutes as it is my shake and run breakfast so I would not be so quick to say that is the answer, especially if it may be that people are experiencing an allergic reaction to something within the product itself. There are a number of ingredients that some people may have never been introduced to and trherefore, they may be unaware that they are allergic to it. Best advice, review the product and concerns with doctor. I love Shakeology and recommend to everyone, and I use it daily, so I am not knocking it.

Sampled are provided from coaches, typically. It is the same as buying the packets through BB, but coaches may send you one of each free or charge.

This breaks my heart to see some of you having adverse reactions to Shakeology. I have forwarded this feedback onto the nutritionists at Beachbody, with the anticipation they can find resolve and see what's causing this.

I personally, have been in love with Shakeology since the day it launched, but definitely recognize it's not for everyone, nor even if you want it so badly, your body may not.

Stay tuned for some resolve to these reactions....I hope! emoticon

Keep pushing play!

Me too! I tried shakeology three separate times over a span of a month, three worst days I can remember. From my time in the Marines to now I have developed a fairly strong stomach, eat it now, taste it later eating style so I was surprised. I can actually feel it moving through me like some huge evil parasite. I think I must be allergic to something in there. Thankfully the wife loves it and has only had positive results from it. For me, ill sport a logowear shirt, keep it on me and not in me!
