Best way to do Insanity??
Best way to do Insanity??

Hello everyone!

So I actually have been doing Insanity since 9/20 and am loving it!! I just joined here a little while ago after I kept hearing the ad for it every time I started the workout for the day and since everyone seems so helpful I was hoping for some advice...

My husband and I got in a debate about how hard to be pushing through during the workouts. While I am working out I feel that I am pushing hard and digging deep, but not 100% max effort. When I start with a set of the routine (after warm-up and stretches), I usually go just hard enough to make it through the whole set. If I push myself and go as hard as I possibly can during the first exercise (first 30 sec of the set) then I end up having to rest and cant catch my breath enough to make it through to the next exercise. I sometimes can half-@$$ my way through the third exercise and have a little energy remaining for the fourth exercise but not for 100% you know? Since this doesn't seem like the best way to use my energy, I end up just doing fairly hard through the entire thing. Enough to be sweaty and tired and pushing myself but not as hard as I possibly can. I am still exhausted after each set and sometimes need to take a few seconds rest during the exercise. It's not like I am breathing easy or not being challenged. (I also have asthma btw) But I even have to pause it sometimes between sets just to recover more and make it to the next set. I have felt that its more important to get through the entire thing but now am second guessing that logic. And its confusing too cause sometimes Shaun T says to go slower if you need to focus on form, but then he also says to go as hard as you can... hmm...

So ultimately, the debate is which is a better way to do Insanity.... should you push yourself as hard as you possibly can and then break when and until you need it (even if that means not doing each exercise)... or should you go hard through the workout but be able to accomplish it all?

Thanks in advance for all your help and good luck! KPP!

Here's what I did, not that its right or wrong.

I pushed myself 110% all the time. Yes, I ended up taking more breaks at first but over time I was able to increase my stamina and strength and do more. Watch the extra's in the DVD's. They go full speed until they simply can't do it anymore (and taking more than the scheduled breaks). Giving it 90% isn't wrong either but I would think results might be a little slower to see and get.

Here is my 2 cents.

1. Even the people in the video take breaks. Just look at Akeal (spelling?), he takes breaks all the time. Don't sweat the breaks just set mini goals to go further next time.
I.E. on my 3 set of ski abs & in n out in PCC I did 10 of each. Next time I do it I'll do 11 and so on.
2. Form is everything. For me personally I think I didn't get a six pack because my form was not there. It's hard for me to keep my core tight and push 110%. You get more cardio if you push harder / more abs if the form is correct. That's my thinking anyway. Give you an example. I went from running a 9 minute mile to 6 1/2 in my 63 days. This time around I'm focussing on form. I may not be doing as many 1 2 3 heismans as Tonya but so what.
So I guess it's what do you want to get out of the program?
Hope this helps.

Go all in! Don't hold back and pace yourself, push as hard as you can. If/when you reach failure, rest, and get back in as soon as you can, for as long as you can. If that means doing 10 more seconds of power jumps, then taking a 10 second break, then 3 seconds of jumping, the 20 second break, that's fine. Push yourself as hard as you can, and you'll improve over time.

Some people pause the dvd when they take a break. I don't. I let it play, as it encourages me to get back in sooner, so I don't miss out on too much of the fun.

Yeah I guess after thinking about it some more and reading your responses, it makes the most sense to go all in all the time until I cant anymore. As intimidating as that sounds, I will give it a try. I only have two more days until this first month is over, but I hope its not too late and I don't die in month two!

Thanks everyone! emoticon

You'll do fine in month two, just do YOUR best. Nothing can stop you from doing your best except you. It's a lifetime journey, keep improving every day, every week. This is the fountain of youth!

Thanks spydor!

I just finished Pure Cardio and Abs and I could definitely feel the difference of 100%! It was great- super hard but that made it great- and so I will for sure do MY best in month two- thanks for the encouragement!!
