Shakeology allergic reaction
10/21/10 10:33 PM
My friend wanted to try some shakeology today, so I gave her a sample of both the greenberry and chocolate. She definitely loved the chocolate. After a while, she started feeling itchy. She doesn't have any problems with dairy, she actually doesn't have any allergies. We can't figure out what it could be.
We are both cooks and we have eaten all kinds of foods. This is the first time for her to have a reaction to something she has eaten or drank. We looked at the ingredients over and over again, we just don't what could be the problem.

I had the exact same problem!! I also have no known food allergies, but I assumed I must be allergic to one of the many ingredients in Shakeology. I really like Shakeology though and wanted to keep drinking it. After about a week and a half, the itchiness went away. I think my body got used to it and tolerated it much better over time. Now, I drink Shakeology every day with no problem.

It's tough to say what it could be because there are so man y ingredients. She could try 1/4 serving for a few days then go to 1/2, then keep doing that and see how it works out for her.

My friend has tried shakeology again, this time only chocolate and she felt fine. I think its just the greenberry that she cant drink. She doesnt like that one anyways. But shes happy to know that she wasnt the only one.

My husband has had issues drinking any type of protein shake. The last one we tried had sunflower oil powder in it. We figured that b/c he is allergic to sunflower seeds, that this was the problem. He tried a chocolate Shakeology this morning and within minutes was feeling the same sypmtoms as before - chest pain, dizzines, nausea, etc. A benedryl got him back to normal but this is just so frustrating.

He is a finicky eater and won't eat many fruits and veggies and I thought the Shakeology would be good b/c I didn't see any of the the usual suspects in the ingredients. Is it possible that there are things NOT listed on the label yet are still in the shake?

Things we know he is allergic to:
bananas
strawberries
grapes (but is ok with grapeseed extract)
any nut except peanuts
sunflower seeds
whole oats

Everything is listed on the bag, in detail. It could be there is something else he is allergic to that you haven't come across yet, or perhpas the oat grass is reacting the same way as whole oats..or one of the berry powders is acting the same as strawberries. Regardless, this is not for him.

I was wondering if anyone with a Sulfa/Sulfonylurea allergy is also allergic to Shakeology? There is an ingredient in Shakeology called Methylsulfonylmethane that concerns me since I have a Sulfa allergy. Anyone with sulfa allergies have problems using Shakeology?

I'm leaving this post here just in case someone in the forum does have experience with this subject, but you should also go post in the Shakeology forums which are read by the people at BB who are charged with formulation and customer service, etc. They'll have more insight, I think.
Shakeology forums.

Did you ever find out if Shakeology is safe for those with a sulfa allergy?

I have a lot of food sensitivities but have had no problem with Shakeology.

My son had a problem with it as he is allergic to Peas. Peas are a legume just like a peanut.

They can cross react.

Shakeology has a Pea protein in it, this may be the problem.

If somebody has a Peanut allergy then this could be an issue.

No disrespect to the prior poster but if you have a problem with the standard amount I do not think a 1/4 or 1/2
serving is advisable. You still carry that allergy.

I would just avoid the product for now. See a Doctor and get tested for food allergies.

I would be bummed if I didn't tolerate this product as it gives me everything I miss in my normal diet but you
need to be safe.

FYI: Some reports claim that up to 1 out 120 people have a gluten allergy (Celiac Disease). Another genetic or acquired sensitivity is to Lactose which is very common. If you mix Milk into the powder rather than juice or water, that could be the issue. Look into these first. It is much more likely that there is a problem there than with other ingredients such as Rose Hips or Yacon.

Yup. I am allergic to peas and had a reaction to Shakeology after one sip. Same reason I have issues with multi-grain pasta.

Hi ILuvLucy. I highly recommend posting this question in the Shakeology forums.

That's where a lot of the discussion about possible allergies and such has happened.

BTW, when you post about a potential reaction to Shakeology please include the variety of Shakeology you're talking about. There are vegan and non-vegan varieties and a total of 4 flavors. Each has a slightly different list of ingredients.
