Play Ball! Well it used to be the sweetest sound I would hear each day. Now it’s “Bring it”

First off this thread is for everyone! I am just a guy that has a passion for baseball among other sports and wanted to start something that would bring like-minded people that are doing P90X together. If you stopped here you more than likely are a baseball fan or have played the game of baseball or softball before.

Let me tell you a bit about myself. My name is Rob, I am 5’10’ and soon to be 45 years old and I started P90X on August 1, 2010 and weighed in at 317 lbs. At the time I am posting I am in the middle of week eleven and I am beginning to regain the vigor of life I once had a short time ago. I have now lost 24 pounds and 4 inches on my waist on P90X and have decided to make this a life change. I am past the 90 days that is usually allotted to finish the program because I work long hours managing a country club. Some days I just did not have the time or the energy for a workout at all.

After eight weeks I was seeing extra energy and finding time not only to do the workouts but to take long, four mile walks with my dog. Those walks turned into jogs which have now turned into HIIT runs. HIIT runs are high intensity interval training runs. The idea is to get your heart rate up and then bringing it down and repeat the cycle over and over again. This has worked for me and it can work for you. Just like the X you have to work up to it.

I am starting this thread also because my coach, Matt thought I should start something to pay it forward. He has been a great help to me and I would like to do the same for someone else. I have become a Beachbody Coach and I am looking to help anyone looking for an experienced old ballplayers opinion on how to recapture that feeling of youth.

I was a catcher all my life and my knees took a beating, I was never the big guy so I was not stuck behind the plate because of that. I just loved being behind the plate and directing traffic. Somehow I turned into the big guy and now I want to be the centerfielder. I have had to modify some of the workouts especially the Plyometrics because of my knees but as I have gone along and built my legs back up I am feeling confident that by round three I will be making up on my jump time.

Pull-ups have been a challenge and I am working hard to get to where I need to be so I will see some serious development in my back.

So I went into this thing ready to drop weight and build muscle. Don’t get me wrong I had/have a pretty stong muscle base. I was a catcher for 20 years and my legs and but are solid but I was soft in the middle. Well I did not lose much weight for a while there. After losing seven pounds the first ten days it stopped coming off for a while there. I just kept pushing play meanwhile I was trying to figure out my diet. As I built muscle the weight started coming off slowly. People were noticing I was looking smaller but the scale was telling me “no you’re not” well I was losing inches and it was showing.

I recently started drinking Shakeology and that has been an experience! I feel great! I feel more alert at work, I feel more alive every day and I have lost 3 pounds in the last six days with its assistance.

As far as baseball the floor is always open. I Love the game in its purest form. I am a National League fan off course. Not a fan of the Designated Hitter and I have lots of opinions on the business that is now baseball.

So post a comment here or Buddy me and lets talk P90X and maybe some hot stove until March and Spring Training rolls around.

Rob,

Thanks for opening this thread. I like the idea of a softball/baseball blog. I am starting week two today and I am rolling. I cannot wait for spring and the beginning of the new softball season. I've been a lifelong baseball and now softball player. Love the game and live it through the spring and summer. I did fall ball once, it's fun, but softball can be painful in late Nov - early Dec. As a lefty, I have been resigned to playing first base, catching, or outfield. I love playing first base, but being short and on the heavy side (5'7", 230lbs) i am not the most ideal first basemen. Anyways....I am hoping to lose the weight and gain the upper body strength to crush the ball. I cannot wait till next season and to show off my new leaner body.

Thanks you to my fellow Bigz for stopping by to check this out. It really means a lot to me. I will be here and on Matt’s page religiously as this communication thing is really working for me. After I got over the fact that I was way too big to continue down the road I was on I have been able to talk about it and it has helped me in my progression. Kind of admitting you’re an alcoholic I would guess?

Regina after I saw you had posted those Raiders pictures I had hoped you would stop by. Are you an Athletics fan also? Big win for your boys this past weekend can they keep it going is the question? I guess tomorrow is the big day for you as you start your first phase of doubles. Good luck and bring it! I guess you will be the one to push me to do the round of doubles come April or May when my members go back up north and I have some time.

Gregg I played some softball also, do you play fast pitch, high arc or windmill? I wish I had the X when I played. It would have been great off season conditioning. And man can you imagine the jolt you are going to put into the ball when you get back this season after a round under your belt. I have a good friend that is playing in an over 40 baseball league and I am going to be tempted to put the tools of Ignorance back on if I can get to where I plan to. I coach now so I still have my arm and the glove kills never go away I would love to see some live pitching. I may soon have to take my son to the cages and show him what I hope I still have.

BBM, don’t be such a lurker, looking at your pictures you are having success. Share it and relish it! I know you have the nerve to Bring it! You posted your pictures, that’s a huge step. I have not done that yet. I have them but want better results before I post. So you got me there. How do you feel on the Creatine? Have you seen much of an effect with it? Are you getting the same charge from the Shakeology as I am getting? And I see you are a fellow heart rate monitor user, what is your brand? I love my Suunto. I have been charting everything. Average rate for the duration of a workout, the high, the calories burned. I love numbers so it helps me to set goals.
Thanks again for the support! Lights out until tomorrow,
Rob

Rob this is awesome!! Well I havent played for years but planning on joining a co-ed softball team in the Spring... I figure it will be a good time... I use to play in middle school and some highschool... anyways

Phase 3 started yesterday... with Chest and Back and man that is one brutal workout, I did something a tad different though... I feel there is a lot of down time in that one... maybe cause i only get 10-18 reps in so to keep my heart rate up when I finished with my set I would skip to the next set... and it cut my workout time by 7 minutes but I burned 125 more calories (according to my heart monitor) kinda made it fun but when I was done... seriously just laid there for 20 minutes... lol

Well buddy... Ill keep stopping by!!

ps had to add some color to your thread LOL

I gotta' check in and support my man, Rob! We have been following along together on the XL thread. You have been doing great work, bro! Good luck with this thread and helping folks out as a coach.

I only played baseball through middle school. I focused on football once I hit highschool. LOL, when I did play baseball, I would either mash it, or strikeout. :-p ... I happened to be living in Toronto when I was a kid and the Blue Jays were winning world series w/ Carter, Gruber, Barfield, etc. So, since those were the first games I went to live, the Blue Jays have always been my #1 MLB team.

Anyways - keep up the good work! You are almost done with Round 1. emoticon

Please don't mention Joe Carter and the Blue Jays. Living in Philadelphia, it still stings. Sure 2008 took away most of the sting but there is always a small part of me that watches the highlights and thinks this time Mitch Williams will strike him out.

I've done both P90X and Insanity in the past. Currently I'm workout out at my gym. I needed a short break from Tony and Shaun, plus my insurance company reimburses 1/2 of my gym fee if I make 120 visits in the year. My goal is to reach 120 visits by the end of this year and then start a P90X/Insanity hybrid in January. I figure hitting P90X and Insanity will allow me to build up speed and power for softball next spring.

Tony! My Man! Thanks for dropping by. At the risk of upsetting Mike from Philly (and Mike I feel your pain) those teams in Toronto were so underrated! They had some serious hall of fame caliber players Joe Carter being one of them. Robbie Alomar is still to this day my favorite second basemen to watch and that says a lot because being a reds fan I am a Joe Morgan man. So you seem like an all or nothing kind of guy and I can see the stikeouts being high! LOL! Pat Borders from those teams and I got to know each other pretty well when I lived in Orlando he is a pretty cool guy. Almost done with my first round, funny but I am looking forward to starting it all over again and crushing it even harder than this current round.

Mike, Welcome! Your Phillies killed me this year. First Holiday (my favorite pitcher in the bigs) throws a no-no against my Reds and then they lose to my second least favorite team the Giants. I thought at the all-star break they had the best team in the league but just never put it all together. So will they resign Jason Werth? I hope so, you got to respect that talent and he make all the guys in front of him so much better. My company had the same sort of deal with the gym they paid 100% but I have always hated gyms, doing my workouts in the garage is the best thing to every happen to me. How did you like Insanity? I am trying to decide what I want to incorporate into my plan going forward. My coach said the Insanity workouts would be too much on my knees. Let know what you think.

My girl Steph the resident Babe on the XL thread and one of my fellow underlings of the Man that is Matt. Also one of the one’s who helped me decide on the name of my business and the name of this thread. Thank you for stopping by also. I have only done the coed softball thing once when I worked for Disney but we had a great time, enjoy it and it’s really about just getting out and doing something. Tony has said the X is for everyday life and preparing us for the real world. Plus you know baseball players are the best looking athletes and since you are on the hunt it could be a good thing. LOL! I saw your post on the XL this morning about burning more calories on your work out that is very cool. You have a pretty interesting background and way of looking at things I am glad we have hooked up on these pages. Any way I can help you please let me know and thanks for adding color to my thread.

Well I have to do my workout tonight as I have had a guy here all morning looking at my dryer and my fridge. Dryer is fried and I am hoping not to have to buy new for both appliances. I will do Kenpo X and Shoulders /Back tonight if I can fit it in as I missed yesterday with all my running around doing errands and such. Today I go to the doctor to see the result from my physical, he was impressed with the changes I made let’s see if my body was as impressed.

Well I've never been a player (not all that athletic TBH) other than a season on a company softball team a number of years ago, but that was fun.

I grew up in Cincinnati during the "Big Red Machine" heyday so of course I was a Reds fan growing up. After the '94 strike I kinda stopped following baseball for a while, but I became a Diamondbacks fan when I lived in Phoenix during the early to mid '00s when they were doing well - and since they were in the NL west like the Reds used to be so they had all of the old rivals, Dodgers, Giants and Padres. emoticon So now I like it when either of 'em do well. Loved that the Reds made the playoffs this year but the NLDS series against the Phillies was tough to watch.

But living here in the northeast now it's all Yankees, Red Sox, & Mets fans so I'm an outcast. emoticon

Just to make a minor correction, my name is Mark and not Mike, but that's not a problem because I've been called a lot worse things in my life. Trust me the Phils killed us around here too. Their hitting was up and down all year and unfortunately it went down in the playoffs. I think they have to do everything they can do to resign Werth but I'm not sure if he's worth the $18 millinon a year he probably will want. Me personally, I'll take $12 million a year to play for a team that looks like a contender for the next 3-4 years. I think baseball players (and all professional athletes) lose a grip with reality on just how much money they really make. Give me $12 mil/year for 3 or 4 years and generations of my family will be able to live comforatably for a long time to come.

I have found that working out I tend to go in cycles. After 90 days of P90X, I need a break from Tony and the gym provides a nice change of pace, plus it helps to see some of the women there for motivation (sorry ladies, don't mean to be a perv but it sure helps). After a couple of months back at the gym, I need a change of pace so P90X and Insanity would provide a nice break. I haven't done Insanity in over a year because I went to P90X after Insanity and then this past summer I was playing in 3 different softball leagues which took up a lot of time and prevented me from sticking to any specific program. I enjoyed doing Insanity and pushing myself to new limits. I have no doubt that after I completed Insanity, my cardio conditioning was at an all time high, but towards the end of 60 days, I really wanted to get back into lifting weights.

That would be a, "no". Actually, I don't like baseball at all. I know, I know, sacrilege. But I just never got in to it. I'm a huge football and basketball fan.

As a Raider fan, I can tell you that you have to celebrate while you can. For the last ten years, they've found a way to F up one season after another. You can't get too comfortable. They usually surge in the preseason and the first part of the season and then tank. However, this is the best they've played in years. Their offense is humming and they've always been known for their defense. So, to be above .500 this late in the season, is something to talk about. This weekend they have a BYE so I am turning in to the World's Biggest Broncos Fan!!!!! Let's Go Broncos (only because they play the Chiefs).

I start doubles on Friday in Phase 2. Phase 1 has been the same as classic so it's nothing new. I am looking forward to the challenge. I definitely need more cardio so I am doing a mix of Cardio X, going to the gym for the elliptical and doing some jogging around the neighborhood. If I stop posting on Friday, you'll know why.

Mark Not Mike, I am getting to be the same way. I work out in my garage and it gets old. So I'm mixing some gym time back in to this round of the X. I haven't tried Insanity or any of the other programs. After seeing Matt do ChaLEAN, I might try that, I like the mix of cardio and weight lifting. I don't think it's pervy to hit the gym to see hard bodies. You have to have some kind of visual incentive to keep going, right? I don't sit there and drool at the dudes lifting weights but I definitely look out of the corner of my eye to see what's up. I can't get that at home. I think the important part is that we just keep working at it.

Regina, No disrespect intended! I was just referring to a previous conversation Steph and I ad on the XL thread. You have shown your “babeness” on numerous occasions. I kind of stopped watching the Raiders when Stabler retired. I was not a Plunket , Schrader or Marinovich fan so I keep it on the east coast. I definitely admit to the east coast bias when it comes to my sporting teams. So I have not even looked at the book but is the doubles workout the same workout twice in the same day? Or is it just more reps and sets in the same workout?

Mark, sorry about that! $12 million? I would take $2 million to be a bullpen catcher and that has to be the worst job out there. You are correct as Scott Boros will try to package Werth as the greatest RF to be available since Roberto Clemente. Not there yet but I would put him up to anyone around right now. I would like to see Utley stay healthy for one full season and see the number he could put up. I agree on the fact that a lot of the players have no touch of reality but you do have to consider that a major injury to a young player and it’s all over. Look at Strausburg he could be done. So as much as I hate Boros he did the best he could do for the kid. If he comes back then the sky is the limit.
Greg, I am a huge Reds fan and making the playoffs may have made my decade. Diamondbacks not so much but, I bet it was cool being in Phoenix during that run. That series will always stand out in my memory because of 911 and the game winning hit. Luis Gonzales is a friend of mine and Jay Bell scored the winning run. (Jay is the cousin of my wife’s best friend) so we were going crazy in my house that night. That and the fact that they beat my most hated team the Yankees made for a sweet celebration.

Going to the gym has always been something I was uncomfortable with. I did not like it in college and I could never see me paying for a membership. Once I convinced my wife that the garage was the place for me and it needed to be rid of all the pack rat stuff taking up valuable space I became super excited to have my own man cave. I painted the floors, put down a rubber floor and hung my heavy bag and claimed it as my new home. TV on top of the fridge and DVD player on for some Extreme workouts.

No worries, I remember the conversation. I was just giving you a hard time.

I grew up in FL but we didn't have much football to root for in Tampa Bay.

Doubles just adds in Cardio X on your strength days in phase 2. So you're doing 3 more cardio workouts a week. Then in Phase three you add it in on your plyo day also for a total of four days a week. Sounds crazy but I think it will be challenging and fun. Or brutal and deadly, I guess time will tell.

Friday is the day.

Well homie!! Time for me to get some work done!!

Intensity; I will talk about it more in today’s blog entry. Yes I have officially started blogging something I bet my high school teachers never would have guessed I would do. Anyway what is the intensity that you bring to each workout? How hard are you really pushing yourself? Today I did some Kenpo. For me it’s my favorite workout away from the weight workouts. I blew it out! I did every bit as much as Tony and the kids today and let me tell you it was the best workout I have had in the eleven weeks I have been doing this stuff. I burned 903 calories in 58 minutes. I am sorry but that deserves a WTF! Where has that been the last two months? I can officially say today I brought it.

Who out there uses a heart Rate Monitor? What is your average burn per each work out? After all my rounds of Kenpo I am now averaging 678 calories per workout. That should show you the difference in what you will be able to do over time. Stick with it, feel the burn and Bring it!

@Steph, Come on I now the game, I may be out of it but at one time I was a key player. Not a Player and Key Player! The difference is I played the field but never hurt anyone. At least I tried not to. LOL!

@Broadcast; thanks for stopping by! So you are the Big game man. Where do you charter out of? Never much of a fishing guy! Not to be cliché but all I ever used to catch was a buzz.
@Regina; I hear ya on the Buc’s! My wife is a fan of theirs not I, I am a fan of the almighty point spread and who will bring me home the bacon. Did I say bacon? Sorry CASH! Doubles actually sounds interesting when you put it that way. Maybe on my fourth round I go that route. I got a miss mash of a second round coming up because it will take me 4 months to get all the workouts in over the winter because of my schedule. Then number three starting in April will be in 89 days because I have to prove to myself that I can! Then doubles starting in July! That will be the plan. That’s now settled!

Check you all later!
